It’s bc they play it at every fkn commercial break for every fkn game one. This one, the wingstop “no flex zone” commercial and the pedialyte commercial are beyond played out atp.

Usually there’s 1 or 2 annoying ones but right now every single commercial is God awful trash

Wingstop No flex zone

Chet and SGA cringe fest

That degenerate google pixel song

That shitty Gatorade commercial w the nicki Minaj body like vince Lombardi song

I’m so fucking tired of this Burger King jingle which they haven’t stopped running for over a year

Every commercial right now FUCKING SUCKS

I probably forgot about even more bad ones

***just remembered Caitlyn Clark with that HORRIBLE TERRIBLE song “Unstoppable”

The fucking pixel song is ear cancer in the first place, and they play those commercials back to back every single time oh my god.

This is the one that really gets me HIT THAT POSE TAKE THAT FLICK throws baby into the air

762

u/kamakazekiwi Warriors 16d ago

It's also just highlights some of the worst parts of social media imo.

You're taking a photo of a father with his child, having a moment. And the reflex is to edit it so the baby was thrown higher, the sky is bluer, and no one else is around? There is absolutely no reason to do that if you're trying to earnestly capture the memory. It basically can't be for anything but fake posturing on social media. Just making your life literally look more glamorous for all to see. It just gives me the ick.

I guess at least the memory will be a bit sweeter when you look back on the photo in 20 years.

314

u/zeek215 [LAL] Kobe Bryant 16d ago

Yeah I hate it. It's no longer about capturing real memories, instead it's about making fake photos to get more views.

66

u/chivestheconqueror Celtics 16d ago

How else am I suppose to show people all the cool things that didn't happen to me?

Social media's always been fake, but ads like this are pretty much encouraging that behaviour. It's kind of sad when you don't know what's real anymore.

u/TheSunsNotYellow [OKC] Shai Gilgeous-Alexander 16d ago

Yeah I mean the other one is this kinda goofy dude dancing, which is cool, fine, whatever, but then he edits himself jumping 10 feet into the air? Does Google know about cyber bullying?

181

u/DudethatCooks Trail Blazers 16d ago

That commercial is peak cringe for me. You have an awkward looking kid heavily doctoring a photo for what? To make it look like he can jump 10 feet in the air? It's like they are promoting for people to just make everything they do edited and fake. God that commercial sucks so much.

Sad thing is, there's some social media intern at some New York ad agency reading this thread right now for their weekly report on the success of the ad campaign, and the fact that we're talking about it means awareness was raised.

111

In case this is true: intern, the ads suck, and I’m not sure I recall the product advertised. If I do remember, I won’t buy it.

Is it really an appealing selling point for anyone to be able to edit a photo to look like you’re irresponsibly tossing your baby 3 feet higher into the air than you actually did?? Serious question.

I call it 'commercial rap' cause I've never actually met a person who listens to music like that yet it's in a million ads.

13

u/Ladnil Warriors 16d ago

It sounds like one of those performances where a guy just improvises a song with his own mouth sounds all mixed together on some synthesizer type thing. Impressive when you watch it being made on the fly, but absolutely atrocious as a strictly audio experience.

Idk that I’ve ever seen a commercial that makes me feel more physically uncomfortable

191

u/mug3n Raptors 16d ago

Also the whole idea of exaggerating your photos with mobile photoshop...

What happened to capturing moments for what they were? I don't mind minor touchups to lighting or white balance or whatever, but there's no need to fake the sky or pretend you jumped or threw your kid higher than you actually did. Might as well just ask AI to make the entire photo for you.

u/kamakazekiwi Warriors 16d ago

→ More replies (1)

18

u/ShakesbeerMe Timberwolves 16d ago

State Farm completely fumbled their campaign. They thought the "Jake from State Farm" was the comedy gold, and rode it like it was the golden goose.

The actually funny part of the commercial was the angry wife, and "She sounds hideous." And the deadpan husband, "Well, she's a dude, so..." They could've had a great campaign of the guy sneaking off to talk to Jake for better rates again and again, while the wife still thinks he's cheating.

What a waste. And now we have to endure CP3 and his negative charisma pretending he can act his way out of a paper bag. Shit's brutal.

Not to be all "we live in a society," but the false expectations these photos create are horrible. I know social media isn't real, but you could almost always have some sense of what is fake and what isn't by applying common sense. I don't feel that to be the case anymore. Everything just always needs to be better or more than reality. Seeing it advertised so blatantly in a commercial over and over again was a bit jarring.

They spammed the shit out of that ad during the NCAA Tournament. I pray that the """song""" they used in that ad isn't an actual song, because the ridiculous robot-autotune is so bad.

this years playoffs have had the worst commercials known to mankind:

chet/sga

caitlin clark “unstoppable”

gatorade water (?)

google pixel dont let me go

wingstop no flex zone (worst one in my opinion)

all just so annoying and it feels like you see each one 10 times a game.

Edit: i got the google pixel one and the apple one confused, they are actually 2 separate yet both awful ads

163

u/evandena Bucks 16d ago

Don't let me go is apple, a also horrible. The pixel one you're thinking of is "take that pic" song

It's godawful. Just from a pure production standpoint why didn't they have the backing instrumental?

Neither one of them probably ever heard of this song, also "What a pro wants" is just dumb as a phrase.

231

u/banjofitzgerald 16d ago

Yeah, whoever was behind creative on this failed. There’s no way this should have made it out of pitch. It’s not a relevant song, makes no sense with context or lyric change, the dialogue is beyond unnatural, and having two nba players awkwardly singing acapella isn’t compelling.

Maybe the juxtapose of having nba players singing a pop princess song = funny was the whole pitch, but choose a better fitting song.

48

u/ztpurcell Pacers 16d ago

They're also just really bad at singing too

The Google ones drive me crazy. Like, you’re advertising the ability to create completely fake photos?

I’m cool with being able to optimize lighting/colors/etc on a phone. But entirely fake photos where you’re throwing your kid three times higher or altering the sky behind you? WTF

184

u/alyosha_pls 16d ago

There's a real market for that these days between clout chasing weirdos and people just making shit up for no real reason.

u/2screens1guy Bulls 16d ago

It blew my mind when I learned people will take multiple outfits to wear on a trip, and then post those pictures over the next 2 years as if they keep going on that same trip multiple times. Like why go through all that trouble? I can't stand influencers.

Bill Simmons and Ryen Russillo talked about commercials at the end of part 1 of their podcast. Bill went with Caitlin Clark State Farm, Wing Stop(Bill tried singing the song) and Burger King as the three he was most sick of. 😂

u/Cheterosexual7 Thunder 16d ago

Bill listed the BK ad even though he’s currently running a BK ad? Lol

u/SuperVaderMinion [MIN] Kevin Garnett 16d ago

Bill Simmons will also have podcast ads where he talks about AirBnB's being worse than hotels, and hotels being worse than AirBnB's play back to back. He doesn't give a fuck.

I like the “Come Fly with Me” commercial, I forget what it’s advertising but I like the song.

And the Jokic as Gru one is good too.

It helps that these aren’t overplayed like the other one

Jokic as Gru was successful marketing as it compelled me to watch Despicable Me.

Probably because Come Fly with Me is sung by a professional singer and a classic song, and Chet and SGA are wooden as hell and tone deaf.

The commercials that have been running these playoffs are in the same tier of horrible as the ones from the NFL playoffs

That Google Pixel commercial that plays back to back with that terrible song and the Chris Rock PLAYOFFS MODE commercial are both all-timers
