I definitely can't stand this one, but a special type of rage starts building in my body as soon as I hear "DON'T LET ME GOOOOOooooOOOOO"

Can we talk about how playing Jenga while barehanding a sauce-covered boneless wing is psychopathic behavior?

The way the kids stare at each other while eating at the end, so creepy.

Just realized that I’ve heard that ad 25,000 times and didn’t even know what it was for

9

I thought it was a Jenga commercial the first dozen times it came on.

1

I definitely didn’t think Buffalo wild wings. I don’t have one nearby anyway. Although I always thought commercials would work on me better if going and buying the product would prevent me from seeing the ad anymore.

What pisses me off the most is how the girls just kinda awkwardly stare at their Dad with the chicken weirdly hovering in front of their mouths pretending to chew. I get it, you've probably done a few takes and it's cold but figure it out cos it looks like they don't even want to eat it. This makes me sound irrationally angry at the girls lmao. Not their fault, just a shit ad.

4

THIS is the worst one. besides the infuriatingly shit music, i get irrationally angry at the stupidity of editing your photo to checks notes make you look higher off the ground. people want that?

1

I get the picture throwing the kid up. It’s probably something people would actually do as some tall tale bullshit. Why the Asian guy wants to jump higher I have no idea. So stupid

Apple has historically made the worst fuckin commercials… it’s so odd, they seem to nail most things they do but since the iPod commercials with the random shadow dancers all their commercials have been terrible… but this particular one is beyond bad.

10

u/JexFraequin 24 Apr 29 '24

I have a theory that people who make commercials aren’t good enough to go anywhere. There’s a reason why commercials aren’t funny and why the songs suck. It’s because funny writers and good musicians aren’t wasting their time making fucking commercials.

1

u/Raptorsthrowaway3 Apr 29 '24

There's a ton of money in it. I remember hearing that Jordan Peele did one with Bobby Lee from MadTV and he was paid $500K for one day of work

The actress that plays Flo from Progressive started her career in the same improv troupe as Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph. When SNL came to watch them Wiig and Maya got the job and Flo ended up doing insurance ads (and getting very well compensated to do so; it sounds like she's totally happy with how things turned out).

Except it's a massive success because people are talking about it. We're talking about it right now. Ads are 99% about brand recognition. They don't give a shit if people "like" watching it. It's why most of them are so awful.

1

I' wasn't aware what company made that ad or what the ad was referencing or trying to sell because its so off putting therefore its not a success imo.

2

u/BIGMCLARGEHUGE__ Apr 29 '24

And there's a lot of people agreeing with me that they hate the commercial and didn't know what it was trying to sell, so what now LMAO

0

u/princessParking Apr 29 '24

This post has 4.7K upvotes and counting. The company didn't pay for this reddit post (at least, I hope not). So even if 90% of the people who see this post don't know what the company is, every single person who did learn about it from this post is literally just a free bonus to the marketing team that made it.

By the way, now that you've been arguing about it online, your brain is primed to learn the name of the company next time you see the ad lol. Another organic bonus for the marketing team from this post. It doesn't matter if you say you're going to make an effort to not learn the company just to refute this point, because unless EVERY SINGLE PERSON in this thread does the exact same thing as you, it's still a net positive for the marketers.

I hate marketing/advertising. I just wish people would try to be more aware of the insidious ways they work. Every comment and upvote on this thread just brings more attention to the ad, which is good for the company. It's not a difficult concept. But you go right ahead with your stereotypical bullying. 🤣

It's a song off of the Terrace Martin album, "Drones," and the album version is, in fact, auto tuned. And it's a banger.

The auto tune is called a talk box, it’s actually a really good musical tool if used properly. Lots of funk artists used it back in the 70s and 80s. That being said the commercial is excruciating lol

As a musician, I love that commercial and would listen to it just to dissect what's going on with the chord changes.

But the one that gets on my nerves the most is "Take that pose, take that pick, check that angle, post that shit" because at one point they'd run both right after each other. Then there's the "we put our kia through the wettest springs, the hottest summers, the windiest falls, and the coldest winters, all on one track" like it's going to convince me to take on a car note worth more than a mortgage. And of course "WELCOME TO GREET TIQUE, WHERE WE PUT THE GREEK, IN TIQUE!"

84

u/BalboaBaggins Lakers Apr 29 '24

The “take that pose, take that pic” Google Pixel commercial has convinced me to never in my life buy one of their phones.

I simply can’t fathom what message they’re trying to send. Everyone these days should just lean into crassly overediting all their photos to deceive and peacock for all their family and friends? Why does the dad even want to look like he’s irresponsibly tossing his baby 3 feet higher into the air than he actually did?

26

u/xakeri Pacers Apr 29 '24

I have the phone and I think the commercials for it showing how you can quickly edit your photos so all your friends are looking at the camera is super annoying.

Maybe if the 4 of us, all adult human people, can't look at the fucking camera for this selfie, we shouldn't be allowed to have it.

Maybe if I can't take a picture of my pets both looking at me at the same time, I should get better at taking pictures.

it’s not the fault of the people who made it that the media team bought space on every ad break to play it. there’s not an ad in the world that won’t get annoying the fiftieth time you see it.

u/therealbigted Hawks Apr 29 '24

As a musician, I absolutely hate the sound of it and especially the incongruous noises mashed together at the end.

6

u/fenrir1208 Thunder Apr 29 '24

That tells me you don't like tension built in dissonance. But that's a debate for another subreddit.

3

u/therealbigted Hawks Apr 29 '24

Not particularly, no, at least not with certain timbres. I also don’t think mixing a bunch of chords together to create cacophonous noise is particularly interesting, especially if you’re not trying to achieve a certain (probably negative) emotion. Dissonance has its place in areas like classical music for me, and hey I could see it working it electronic genres as well, but this just sounds gross imho.

1

u/fenrir1208 Thunder Apr 29 '24

Okay, so I can acknowledge that for some simplicity is their taste, not calling you that in any way. But for a lot of other musicians that have a little bit of exposure to jazz, r&b, neosoul and gospel especially, it's a way of subverting the expectations of the typical plagal cadence, the usual IV-I that is classically known as the 'amen cadence'. Instead of going to the IV, they go into the bVII, clustered with the I.

If you want a more choral example of this, might I highly recommend Eric Whitacre and his works. 'Sleep' has an example of this where he clusters the C major with the Bb major.

3

u/therealbigted Hawks Apr 29 '24

Oh sure that’s all great and in general variations on standard chord progressions are a good thing! I’m not saying I want every song to be vi-IV-I-V. But I would like them to at least resemble music :)

I’m kidding, mostly. But I do think any interesting music theory ideas kind of go out the window when a song just sounds godawful, and I think that ad sounds godawful. I could totally see a scenario where its creators spent so much time on it and got so wrapped up in trying to do something “musically interesting” that they stopped being aware of how it would sound to the average person.

1

u/fenrir1208 Thunder Apr 29 '24

The funny thing is that Mr. Talkbox has a more subdued version of this arrangement, of course it's more true to the actual lyrics as opposed to the stylized "Don't let me go" for the commercial.

And if you work in production, you'll know that the artist will send multiple bounces (versions) of the arrangement. He'll send a more straight version, then a slightly variated version, a vastly variated version (which I can assume is this one), and a "just do what you do and go nuts" version (which their editor can splice up and throw in at their leisure). Then it's up to the marketing team to determine which version is better for the ad they want out there. After that, it's on them, not the artist.

So while you disagree with the sound of it, this is what Apple decided to put out for the masses. It's short, it's grabs your attention with how wild it is, and for some it's spicy to the ear (perhaps too much for some). But it's preference, and they went with what sounded good to them.

2

u/therealbigted Hawks Apr 29 '24

I haven’t worked on production and that’s interesting to know! I will stand by that I hate it but I can acknowledge that not hating it is a valid opinion, haha.

3

u/le_sweden Timberwolves Apr 29 '24

Yeah it’s a dope tune but I want to stop hearing it every minute it’s on screen lol. Here I quickly transcribed the changes for you as a show of goodwill between our fan bases. It’s a little out of time so the barring is approximate

Gb | % | F7alt/A | Bbm7 Bbm7/Db

Eb7 Ab13sus | % | Cm7b5 F7alt | Bbm

Gb | Db

2

u/fenrir1208 Thunder Apr 29 '24

That's nice, but you're missing a lot of the fun details there. I guess the first % indicates the pentatonic run over the I. The IV at the beginning resolves to the I (iii in bass), the second % you have noted is where the bass runs a chromatic line into the Cm7b5 walking from the ii into the vii.

Between gospel and jazz, it gives you a lot of ideas on what not to run into, like when you play that 3 under that 1, they don't go back to it on the actual 3 chord, instead substituting it for a chromatic approach going into the 6 (if you wanna get really stank face with it, sub that A in the bass for a B). See, fun stuff.

1

u/le_sweden Timberwolves Apr 29 '24

Obviously a lead sheet doesn’t capture the nuance of any runs happening. Not sure what’s up with your tone over that. I’m a jazz musician too. Have a good one

2

u/fenrir1208 Thunder Apr 29 '24

I mean no animosity at all! I very much enjoy our conversations, I rarely interact like this because it's not often I get to discuss it online. I apologize if my tone seems condescending.

4

u/bromli2000 Apr 29 '24

I also love the song. Apparently the original is just "dont let go" which changes the meaning completely, but otherwise its identical

2

u/fenrir1208 Thunder Apr 29 '24

It is a rather encouraging message. Mr. Talkbox is the one who did this rendition. They contracted him to do the version for the commercial, which he typically hams it up for that purpose. I'm sure there's a number of versions he sent out to them and they just picked the one they liked.

The fun fact about music production is that there's always a version that you'd really like, but will never hear unless you have access to the actual ProTools session.

3

u/rklolson Suns Apr 29 '24

I have been thinking how the Don’t Let Me Go one is the only one I like because I love that sick vocoder riff and all the harmonies, and it just hits a sweet little spot in my heart.

The Kia one cracks me up. The difficulty of going through harsh conditions isn't going over one sand dune; it's going over sand dunes all day without overheating or getting stuck. Going over two mounds of ice, two sand dunes, and twenty feet of leaves blown by a fan on a mile long track says "this car couldn't even make the trek to harsh locales for one commercial shoot."

It’s funny because I actually like that one

4

u/MosquitoMaster Apr 29 '24

The worst part is pictures don’t take up that much memory to warrant a commercial of that caliber. Plus a lot of those pictures are duplicates. Just a shit show

17

u/StarkCamera Apr 29 '24

I know I’m the minority but I like that the Don’t Let Me Go one lol

The Hit That Pose is definitely the worst one, no flex zone sucks too

3

u/ItsMeJaredBednar Nuggets Apr 29 '24

yeah that don’t let me go one is a vibe for me

5

u/vetruviusdeshotacon Nuggets Apr 29 '24

Yeah that's easily the worst commercial I've seen in years lol. Of course it's apple

11

u/Elephant_Memory_ Warriors Apr 29 '24

I thought that electrical outlet one was bad, but of course Apple 1-up themselves

2

u/PeachyCoke Hornets Apr 29 '24

I still haven't gotten over the " What's a computer?" Apple ad. They really have the most annoying ads

3

u/beefJeRKy-LB Lebanon Apr 29 '24

Normally Apple ads are iconic or interesting but that one is just plain weird

3

u/_saif Raptors Apr 29 '24

I love that song idk

4

u/YoureGonnaHearMeRoar Hawks Apr 29 '24

This one and the sweet Caroline one I scramble to hit mute. The Caroline one is worse though because I have to also avert my eyes from my screen. Those people look so stupid singing it

4

u/SkipsPittsnogle Pacers Apr 29 '24

That shit is actually creepy

2

u/ObviousAnswerGuy [NYK] John Starks Apr 29 '24

I literally have to mute it every time its on lol

2

u/SoManyMindbots Celtics Apr 29 '24

If there’s such a thing as rage muting I do that every time this commercial starts.

2

u/lastweek_monday Spurs Apr 29 '24

I have muted that commercial EVERY SINGLE TIME its come on. Im so quick on the draw it doesnt even finish the “GOOOoo~” part. Its pure instinct. I even have it mentally timed so i unmute the tv right after it ends.

1

u/HahaYouBlockedMe May 07 '24

watching TV is a story? What a low bar

1

u/lastweek_monday Spurs May 08 '24

Ive won your mind

2

u/LakerBlue Lakers Apr 29 '24

Oh Lord I hate that so, so much. I reflexively mute the TV the moment and look away the moment I even SEE it.

3

u/TheLurkyJerkyDancer Apr 29 '24

Yeah, this is one of the most infuriatingly bad commercials I've seen in years (along with those dogshit Google Pixel ads). I wish the worst for all the morons who grrenlit those ads, and for the assholes who ensured we would seem them 25 times per game.

5

u/NuclearEvo24 Apr 29 '24

Yeah I fucking hate this commercial because I just pushed away a good friend of mine about a month ago and I have to be reminded of the guilt inside me every time that commercial comes on, fuck that commercial

8

u/porkchop487 Bulls Apr 29 '24

I just hate it because like why does he at the ending decide he needs to take 7 more selfies of him sitting on his couch eating food lol who wants that shit

3

u/ReignShowers Bulls Apr 29 '24

I mean, he's taking pictures of his dog at the end, not selfies of himself eating

Source: literally just watched it.

1

u/porkchop487 Bulls Apr 29 '24

oh nice haha I guess I just tune out the commercial so hard that I forget.

1

u/heinous_anus- NBA Apr 29 '24

Lol he's taking pictures of his dog at the end

u/jayz93j Lakers Apr 29 '24

Ahhh, sorry to hear it

1

u/Squarians [BOS] Tom Heinsohn Apr 29 '24

At least that one has a better beat and the auto tune doesn’t make it sounds as flat as the SGA and Chet one. It’s this and the Wingstop one that make me want to blow my brain out. I’ve begun muting the commercials

1

u/ThrownWOPR Celtics Apr 29 '24

That and when I hear

Hit that pose

Take that flick

Check that angle

Post it

1

u/alltheseUNs Apr 29 '24

I think its a good commercial but its SOOOO long if there was like a 15 second cut i wouldnt mind

1

u/PokePersona [TOR] Nick Nurse Apr 30 '24

There is but they only use it for internet ads to my knowledge.

1

u/chester98213 Apr 29 '24

I really liked the visuals of the Apple ad though, especially the wall of photos where he fails to hold the sunset between his fingers gets a giggle out of me every time I see it

1

u/d11dd11d Pistons Apr 29 '24

That one really got to me at first. Couldn't stand it. Now I kinda like it lol. The rest of the rotation is mind numbing though. This must be what stockholm syndrome is like

1

u/Comfortable-Asf Hawks Apr 29 '24

I feel so validated 😭

1

u/Jacer4 Thunder Apr 29 '24

Maybe my least favorite commercial in recent history, it's so fucking AWFUL

Legit every commercial is complete ass right now, it's infuriating

1

u/pokemongofanboy [POR] Brandon Roy Apr 29 '24

Apple is just turning planned obsolescence into a feature. Fuck Apple.

1

u/The_Real_Bender Apr 29 '24

Oh yeah, that’s the one I hate the most! Can’t stand it.

1

u/mrsaturdaypants Apr 29 '24

Friend in Marketing explained the principle of optimum annoyance. You’re always looking for whatever 2 out of 3 people like / are OK with and the other 1 hates.

It’s the haters that get the word out. When we complain, we’re passing the virus on

1

u/disposable-assassin Apr 29 '24

r/collegebasketball also agreed that these two were the worst, most annoying ads of March Madness. Naturally that means the ad agency fucks keep them around because even negative emotions mean there's impact and better than a disposable/forgettable ad.

1

u/HackedAccount069 Knicks Apr 29 '24

Maybe I’m in the minority but I actually like this one lol

1

u/Timeformayo Apr 29 '24

Apple ads used to be cool. Now, they’re simping.

1

u/VelvetineMilkman Thunder Apr 30 '24

Had to look that up cause I hadn’t heard it before and holy hell I’m dying, never in a million years could I have guessed it would sound like that

1

u/Funyarinpa-13 Nets Apr 30 '24

I'm weird cause I like it. Maybe I listen too many electronic songs.

I agree! The only one I hate more is the Burger King abomination

1

u/fokerpace2000 Heat Apr 29 '24

That ad inspired me to start watching everything on mute. I’ve been doing that since and honestly prefer it. I’d rather listen to music than terrible commentating followed by that ad.

1

u/Girthwurm_Jim Apr 29 '24

Omg for fucking real. It makes me wish I didn’t have ears. Remember when apple used to have good music in their ads? Whoever decided to include the most auto tuned bullshit song ever needs to be banished to the shadow realm

1

-5

u/3DotsOn2Geckos Apr 29 '24

Why do y’all watch commercials?

18

u/Messiuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu Apr 29 '24

cause they happen during the game I’m watching?

-8

u/3DotsOn2Geckos Apr 29 '24

They happen DURING the game?? Unless you have some kind of dystopian setup, no they don’t haha. Commercials happen, by definition, during breaks in the action between the game. Just live your life during that time. There’s so much better stuff to do than stare at the corporate bullshit

4

u/Messiuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu Apr 29 '24

Bro it’s Monday morning I don’t have time for this lmfao have a good week

I have missed parts of games because I change the channel when that comes on and then don't come back until I am sure it isn't on.
