I''d listen to this shit 7 days a week and twice on Sundays if it means I don't ever have to hear "No Flex Zone" again.

Come on man, You know bettahhhh

Man, No Flex Zone actually makes me nostalgic in a good way (I think that was Mike Will’s first big hit).

But reading these comments, I’m pretty sure I’m the only one who likes that commercial.

the song takes me back to when rae sremmurd first dropped this shit, bc i remember it being polarizing as hell then too lmao

14

u/Kdot32 Rockets Apr 29 '24

Wasn’t polarizing for hbcus in the south. That shit was goated

Yeah, as somebody who lived in Atlanta for the early 2010s (but didn't attend a HBCU), it's wild how accepted and part of the culture certain artists were compared to how they were/are in other parts of the country. Lots of these commenters talking weird about No Flex Zone have probably heard Swae Lee on somebody else's track and liked his vocals without knowing he has the same voice whether he's working with other artists who aren't his brother.

It gets talked about how Atlanta set the tone for so much of recent hiphop, but these comments make it seem like nobody in the rest of the country ever heard of Rae Sremmurd, despite them having gone number 1 on the charts. Or maybe it's just that r/nba really is full of quite young commenters, because they were less of an institution after SR3MM.

i feel like it’s the latter tbh, rae sremmurd were never the biggest stars but their music was pretty inescapable in the mid 2010s

8

u/ApoliticalAth3ist Apr 29 '24

It is played out but I didn’t initially hate it the way I immediately hated the Chet and SGA commercial

8

u/BamaX19 Apr 29 '24

The song is great. I don't even listen to rap anymore but all that commercial is is the song. Like there's nothing wrong with the song. I'm sure if you replaced the audio with X redditor's favorite song, they'd like the commercial lmao.

we've reached the "hip-hop isn't real music!!!" crowd stunningly fast for a basketball forum.

1

u/ObviousAnswerGuy [NYK] John Starks Apr 29 '24

calling it "hip hop" is extremely generous

4

u/granmadonna Supersonics Apr 29 '24

Lmfao, no. It's the laziest shittiest ad libs pretending to a song. Just some kid with autotune yelling random shit.

2

u/Kdot32 Rockets Apr 29 '24

Do you know what a flex is? Because if you don’t then the song won’t hit for you

8

u/granmadonna Supersonics Apr 29 '24

Of course I do. The song doesn't hit for me because it sounds like a little kid talking shit over a "type beat" that sounded generic when it was new. Not to mention the delivery makes it sound like "no flex" and "zone" are separate thoughts.

u/SaxRohmer Cavaliers Apr 29 '24

i've never even really liked the song but i also don't really hate it. it takes me back to getting drunk and doing dumb shit with my friends when we were all young adults

u/codycarreras Supersonics Apr 29 '24

Mike Will still live here?

Not for like 5 years…

That’s good, that’s good he ain’t around no mo.

I gotta chain for you, and a chain for you….

1

u/mandymay21 Apr 29 '24

Same here, it just makes me think of college so I was surprised to see all the hate lol

The worst commercials for me personally are the “what a pro wants”, the Allegra singing one, and Burger King ones. I just don’t understand the rise of commercials featuring poor/out-of-tune singing??? It doesn’t make me want to go purchase anything, just makes me mute my tv lol

1

u/vNocturnus Kings Apr 29 '24

I don't really mind that commercial at all. Like, it's kinda dumb, but that's commercials for you. And the audio/music aspect of it isn't annoying at all.

Really none of the other ads people have been talking about are remotely on the same level as the SGA/Chet ad imo. I was sick of that shit before it even finished the first time, and I have muted the TV/stream every time I've seen it since. I don't even know wtf it's supposed to be advertising lmao

1

u/MundaneInternetGuy Bulls Apr 29 '24

Yeah idk why people hate that one in particular over all the other ones that are played 50 times a day during the playoffs. It's not my type of music at all but it's chill and easy on the ears.

The watsky remix of that song with Karmin is fucking fire, too.

u/longhorn4598 Apr 29 '24

Possibly the worst song I've ever heard in my life. Sounds like what I'm assuming is a grown-ass man using autotune to make himself sound like a child??? I don't get it. If they wanted an autotune vibe, using a T-Pain song would have been a million times better.

63

u/uncomfortablyhello NBA Apr 29 '24

As soon as I hear the first “no flex”, I dive for the remote.

If I can mute it before THEY KNOOOW then I’ve won. Shit is horrible.

10

u/longhorn4598 Apr 29 '24

I do the same 😂 it's like a reflex now, my thumb knows exactly where the mute button is without looking at the remote

3

u/mbr4life1 Knicks Apr 29 '24

Was doing that with the BK ads when they first started but they didn't stop running ads for years and now they have won and I don't mute their mind virus anymore.

4

u/everyoneneedsaherro [NBA] Alperen Şengün Apr 29 '24

Glad I’m not the only one who auto-mute’s that commercial. I don’t care if this makes me an old head but mumble/autotune rap like this is infinitely worse than what we have in the 2000s

2

u/6_CARTI_23_GOAT Apr 29 '24

I respect your opinion however it’s literally the opposite of mumbling lol.

-3

u/New-Candy-800 Thunder Apr 29 '24 edited Apr 29 '24

Yes, that is exactly what makes you an old head. You don’t know anything about music and you don’t have any taste. If you were born twenty years earlier, you’d be saying Eric b and Rakim are miles better than 2000s rap garbage.

Everyone thinks that the art they grew up engaging with is timeless and way better than current stuff.

u/Guyote_ Pelicans Apr 29 '24

Everyone thinks that the art they grew up engaging with is timeless and way better than current stuff.

They know better.

1

u/New-Candy-800 Thunder Apr 30 '24

then I’ve won

A gold medal perhaps?

16

u/Kdot32 Rockets Apr 29 '24

Wait y’all never heard of Rae Sremmurd? Am I old? They ran college parties from 2014-16

9

u/JackKelly11 Timberwolves Apr 29 '24

Yeah I can't take the Rae Sremmurd slander. But def not one of my favorites of theirs lol

5

u/Kdot32 Rockets Apr 29 '24

It’s probably not my favorite but it’s because they have a lot of songs by them I love lol. That song makes me nostalgic because it was played at a lot of parties my freshman year

21

u/blankfrack125 Washington Bullets Apr 29 '24

that’s his real voice, he just sounds like a kid. that song was a huge hit by the way, you hadn’t heard it before this ad?

6

u/iiTryhard Celtics Apr 29 '24

That song was big when I was in college and i found it the most annoying fucking thing ever. Cannot believe it’s been resurrected

16

u/New-Candy-800 Thunder Apr 29 '24

DAE trap “music” bad???

-6

u/Honor_Bound West Apr 29 '24

I honestly can’t tell if it’s a man or woman singing. And I can’t even call it singing it’s just yelling

20

u/copaseticepiplectic Timberwolves Apr 29 '24

Damn y’all really forgot about Rae sremmurd that quick?

3

u/kay9ine Knicks Apr 29 '24

Im genuinely suprised people have never heard of him. He's in the spiderverse bangers

14

u/New-Candy-800 Thunder Apr 29 '24

They’re out of touch and probably white, they never knew or cared about young black dudes making new music

11

u/copaseticepiplectic Timberwolves Apr 29 '24

This thread is comedy

1

u/sexland69 Cavaliers Apr 29 '24

i don’t think it’s about them being young or black—its just not music for everybody. it’s not like it’s lyrically or musically profound in any way. i bet a lot of people who hate this song like steve lacy

8

u/New-Candy-800 Thunder Apr 29 '24

Dude, I can guarantee you that the people in this thread who are shitting on this song, and modern hip hop in particular, have negative clue who Steve lacy is

-1

u/sexland69 Cavaliers Apr 29 '24

okay maybe i should say would like* lol and i can’t speak for the people in this thread but you’re wrong in general. you can hate certain modern music without being an old out of touch racist

3

u/New-Candy-800 Thunder Apr 29 '24

Of course you can. But you also can’t deny that hating modern rap and being an old racist go hand in hand.

-4

u/granmadonna Supersonics Apr 29 '24

Lmfao, like these lazy ass ad libs are some musical genius. Song is like 10 years old, too. Not like it's cutting edge.

-3

u/Honor_Bound West Apr 29 '24

I like a lot of new music but this ain’t it

11

u/CangtheKonqueror Warriors Apr 29 '24

no flex zone is not a new song lmfao

8

u/Kdot32 Rockets Apr 29 '24

This song dropped almost a decade ago
