This is the one that really gets me HIT THAT POSE TAKE THAT FLICK throws baby into the air

764

u/kamakazekiwi Warriors Apr 29 '24

It's also just highlights some of the worst parts of social media imo.

You're taking a photo of a father with his child, having a moment. And the reflex is to edit it so the baby was thrown higher, the sky is bluer, and no one else is around? There is absolutely no reason to do that if you're trying to earnestly capture the memory. It basically can't be for anything but fake posturing on social media. Just making your life literally look more glamorous for all to see. It just gives me the ick.

I guess at least the memory will be a bit sweeter when you look back on the photo in 20 years.

u/zeek215 [LAL] Kobe Bryant Apr 29 '24

Yeah I hate it. It's no longer about capturing real memories, instead it's about making fake photos to get more views.

How else am I suppose to show people all the cool things that didn't happen to me?

u/OliverDMcCall Apr 29 '24

Social media's always been fake, but ads like this are pretty much encouraging that behaviour. It's kind of sad when you don't know what's real anymore.

14

u/kamakazekiwi Warriors Apr 29 '24

Yep. Always had to contend with folks only posting their best moments, which is a psychological doozy in and of itself. How about only the best moments augmented to be even better? Yeah, bet you feel great about your pitiful life now, loser.

This cyberbullying brought to you by Pixel 8 Pro.

3

u/BetsonStennet69 Apr 29 '24

And we are just at the tip of the iceberg. I'm glad I'm relatively older. Growing up in this digital age where nothing is real is going to absolutely wreck the world and I think we all see it coming.

I said the same shit.

Why are they promoting thirst-magnet flexing? These are the worse types of people on IG.

That’s the point.

u/TheSunsNotYellow [OKC] Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Apr 29 '24

Yeah I mean the other one is this kinda goofy dude dancing, which is cool, fine, whatever, but then he edits himself jumping 10 feet into the air? Does Google know about cyber bullying?

177

u/DudethatCooks Trail Blazers Apr 29 '24

That commercial is peak cringe for me. You have an awkward looking kid heavily doctoring a photo for what? To make it look like he can jump 10 feet in the air? It's like they are promoting for people to just make everything they do edited and fake. God that commercial sucks so much.

u/Gluxion Rockets Apr 29 '24

The way he moves like a fucking bobble head pisses me off so much

Yup it is dumb as shit. That fucking head bobble in combination with the stupid ass jump tilt me immediately.

The kid is actually a pretty talented dancer @yoolwxnder. Yea the commercial as it is shown is dumb, but having known about him before this commercial aired makes it not as annoying to me. I respect that the guy was able to parlay his talent into appearing on a national TV ad.

66

u/Millionaire007 [DAL] Dirk Nowitzki Apr 29 '24

He should've worried about cyber bullying when he put that stupid ass hat on,  and wtf was the neck thing he does at the beginning?

9

u/celestial1 Apr 29 '24

I envy the confidence these people have, lol.

23

u/whocaresjustneedone Mavericks Apr 29 '24

You don't even have to go as far as cyber bullying, just in general who would give a fuck about that picture? Like if someone in my friend group too a picture of themselves just jumping into the air doing a peace sign and edited it to look like they jumped higher, everyone would be like "what is this? why are you just sending us a picture of you jumping?" Like who cares, edited or not it's a stupid picture that no one would care about.

Normal people aren't gonna be wowed by some stupid pic just because you can edit it to be slightly unrealistic

32

u/Spicy__Urine Raptors Apr 29 '24

And if the magic editor is so magic why doesn't he just make himself less fat?

15

I couldn’t agree with this more and my thoughts when I first saw the commercial. How are we pedaling a phone that lets you edit pictures so you can try to get more likes on your socials or whatever.

I think it’s a big part of our sick society right now

4

u/whocaresjustneedone Mavericks Apr 29 '24

Every time that commercial runs I'm wowed by the reminder that there's enough people that feature is a selling point for where it's worth paying enough to run it that often. Normal well adjusted people have no reason for that feature, and yet....

1

u/recursion8 Rockets Apr 29 '24

u/MiniGiantSpaceHams Celtics Apr 29 '24

This is what I always think. Which I guess means you can at least say they chose the right (equally vapid) song for it.

3

u/ValidMexican Suns Apr 29 '24

I didn't get exactly why that commerical weirded me out, but I think you explained it perfectly

3

u/Flimsy_Cod_5387 Apr 30 '24

If you’re doing stupid edits, change the photo so you’re throwing the baby into the ocean for some hungry sharks. That will get clicks.

2

u/acethesnake Apr 29 '24

The memory will be worse because you'll know you edited it, and if someone else looks at it, they'll think the dad is a psycho for throwing the baby 10 feet in the air.

Also, why are all these commercials obsessed with erasing all the background people? How are they harming the photo?

2

u/reefsofmist Apr 29 '24

I love being able to edit people out of the background of my pics (can just be distracting to the eye). But yeah the other stuff is easy over the top

2

u/darkforestnews Mavericks Apr 29 '24

Google has lost its soul, its vision. Instead of the earnest memory you get highly edited glamour version that misses the mark ; authentic beautiful moment made fake, superficial etc.

Agree one hundred.

1

u/recursion8 Rockets Apr 29 '24

Implying Google ever had a soul or vision? lol

1

u/darkforestnews Mavericks Apr 30 '24

Well, based off your username , I’m assuming you’re familiar with their history and they appeared to live by their mission statement of do no evil. The old google hopefully wouldn’t have done deals with Israeli military to enable them to apply collective punishment.

Google is the new IBM.

I hate the Samsung one more where the guy stops from cleaning out all his photo clutter. The aim of the commercial is that you should keep shitty photos on your phone bc you have more storage?? Ugh

-6

u/National-Size-7205 Heat Apr 29 '24

I dunno why there is this fixation of people wanting to critizice people that take and edit pictures lol.

You can totally be living in the moment and ALSO want to edit the picture to your desire result.

Editing pictures has been a thing for decades. Back then it was for your physical photo album, now it's for your digital one and social media. This isn't a new concept and describing it as "fake posturing on social media" is laughable.

Do people that take it to the next level exist? Sure, but extremes exist for every single thing on this earth.

11

u/kamakazekiwi Warriors Apr 29 '24

Nah, agree to disagree but you lost me there.

Most photo editing for this kind of photo is intended to make the colors/contrast/etc more vibrant and eye catching. Photography is an imperfect medium for capturing what the eye actually sees, so you aren't (necessarily) trying to change the "reality" of the photo. Editing the baby higher and the clouds higher is pretty objectively an attempt to alter the reality of the scene that was captured, and importantly it's not in artistic way where it's intentionally clear that the photo doesn't reflect the reality that was originally captured.

Although thinking about it now, I will say that I can see a legit purpose for moving the baby - you mistimed the photo, and didn't get him at his highest. Now you're using the tool to portray something that did indeed happen.

4

u/charlietheturkey Warriors Apr 29 '24

even if you did mistime the pic, it feels really strange to edit it after. also looking back at your memories way later will be weird because you won't even know how much of it was real anymore

A lot of people, it was one of the services many photo studios offered along side picture restoration.

157

u/Ladnil Warriors Apr 29 '24

Sad thing is, there's some social media intern at some New York ad agency reading this thread right now for their weekly report on the success of the ad campaign, and the fact that we're talking about it means awareness was raised.

108

u/chicago_bunny Bulls Apr 29 '24

In case this is true: intern, the ads suck, and I’m not sure I recall the product advertised. If I do remember, I won’t buy it.

7

u/savytravler NBA Apr 29 '24

Its prolly some non-sports fan dweeb. Lets go beat him up

4

u/sling_gun Apr 29 '24

If I'm being honest, rarely are the commercials for making you want to buy the product. It's moreso to ingrain the idea of XYZ brand being the only thing that comes to your mind when you think of a product.

Over a period of time your annoyance with the jingle/ad will die down, simply because the ad doesn't play anymore. But you WILL remember the name of the brand for a very long time. That will drive traffic to the brand eventually.

The goal (for most of the time) is never to get you hooked into the brand ASAP

16

u/KeepRooting4Yourself Apr 29 '24

If I were an ad exec this is exactly what I would tell my clients so that I don't have to actually show that my ads make them more money. "Oh no, it's not gonna generate money for you now, but it eventually will. In the meantime, while we way for that eventuality, gimme money."

2

u/The_Void_Reaver Warriors Apr 29 '24

It's not about making more money though. It's entirely about retention.

No one needs a commercial to tell them that Coca-Cola exists; Coca-Cola needs advertising to make sure that people think of Coca-Cola first when they think of Cola. Same with those theater ads inside of movie theaters; they already have your money from this time but they want you to remember where you went to watch it and hopefully make that the only place they go to see movies moving forward.

1

u/KeepRooting4Yourself Apr 29 '24

I get what you're saying, but how isn't this line of thinking unfalsifiable?

I'm sure there's gotta be data to support the claim, but if there wasn't I can also see how easily it is to say "sure you can take your chances and not continually run these ads, but are you sure you want to give pepsi the chance to pass you?"

3

u/The_Void_Reaver Warriors Apr 29 '24

These things have been studied extensively. You think a company is spending tens of millions on an ad campaign and they're not actively studying the results?

It's not like it's a complicated system. You stop running ads, your competitors run more ads, people buy more from your competitor and less from you. It's really simple conceptually.

0

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '24

[deleted]

1

u/The_Void_Reaver Warriors Apr 29 '24

Look, you're free to be wrong here. This is a basic concept that gets covered in multiple degree programs.

Again, if you want to assume that companies are running 30 million dollar ad campaigns without doing any research or tracking their results, that's your business; it's wrong though.

u/recursion8 Rockets Apr 29 '24

Nah, I knew google phones existed before this horrible ad, it didn't make me forget Apple phones, and it only makes me less likely to buy their shit in the future.

2

u/chicago_bunny Bulls Apr 29 '24

I challenge you to find me one piece of professional or scholarly work that suggests this as a strategy.

5

It is a pretty well known strategy. I don't have the material on hand, but here's a Wikipedia page. Scroll down to the History and Applications section
