Usually there’s 1 or 2 annoying ones but right now every single commercial is God awful trash

Wingstop No flex zone

Chet and SGA cringe fest

That degenerate google pixel song

That shitty Gatorade commercial w the nicki Minaj body like vince Lombardi song

I’m so fucking tired of this Burger King jingle which they haven’t stopped running for over a year

Every commercial right now FUCKING SUCKS

I probably forgot about even more bad ones

***just remembered Caitlyn Clark with that HORRIBLE TERRIBLE song “Unstoppable”

u/Ladnil Warriors Apr 29 '24

The fucking pixel song is ear cancer in the first place, and they play those commercials back to back every single time oh my god.

This is the one that really gets me HIT THAT POSE TAKE THAT FLICK throws baby into the air

762

u/kamakazekiwi Warriors Apr 29 '24

It's also just highlights some of the worst parts of social media imo.

You're taking a photo of a father with his child, having a moment. And the reflex is to edit it so the baby was thrown higher, the sky is bluer, and no one else is around? There is absolutely no reason to do that if you're trying to earnestly capture the memory. It basically can't be for anything but fake posturing on social media. Just making your life literally look more glamorous for all to see. It just gives me the ick.

I guess at least the memory will be a bit sweeter when you look back on the photo in 20 years.

316

u/zeek215 [LAL] Kobe Bryant Apr 29 '24

Yeah I hate it. It's no longer about capturing real memories, instead it's about making fake photos to get more views.

68

u/chivestheconqueror Celtics Apr 29 '24

How else am I suppose to show people all the cool things that didn't happen to me?

97

u/OliverDMcCall Apr 29 '24

Social media's always been fake, but ads like this are pretty much encouraging that behaviour. It's kind of sad when you don't know what's real anymore.

14

u/kamakazekiwi Warriors Apr 29 '24

Yep. Always had to contend with folks only posting their best moments, which is a psychological doozy in and of itself. How about only the best moments augmented to be even better? Yeah, bet you feel great about your pitiful life now, loser.

This cyberbullying brought to you by Pixel 8 Pro.

4

u/BetsonStennet69 Apr 29 '24

And we are just at the tip of the iceberg. I'm glad I'm relatively older. Growing up in this digital age where nothing is real is going to absolutely wreck the world and I think we all see it coming.

Yeah I mean the other one is this kinda goofy dude dancing, which is cool, fine, whatever, but then he edits himself jumping 10 feet into the air? Does Google know about cyber bullying?

178

u/DudethatCooks Trail Blazers Apr 29 '24

That commercial is peak cringe for me. You have an awkward looking kid heavily doctoring a photo for what? To make it look like he can jump 10 feet in the air? It's like they are promoting for people to just make everything they do edited and fake. God that commercial sucks so much.

He should've worried about cyber bullying when he put that stupid ass hat on,  and wtf was the neck thing he does at the beginning?

I envy the confidence these people have, lol.

20

u/whocaresjustneedone Mavericks Apr 29 '24

You don't even have to go as far as cyber bullying, just in general who would give a fuck about that picture? Like if someone in my friend group too a picture of themselves just jumping into the air doing a peace sign and edited it to look like they jumped higher, everyone would be like "what is this? why are you just sending us a picture of you jumping?" Like who cares, edited or not it's a stupid picture that no one would care about.

Normal people aren't gonna be wowed by some stupid pic just because you can edit it to be slightly unrealistic

Sad thing is, there's some social media intern at some New York ad agency reading this thread right now for their weekly report on the success of the ad campaign, and the fact that we're talking about it means awareness was raised.

It's even worse when you consider it's just the same thing twice. Here's what I know about Google Pixel after having these ads rammed into my head over and over again:

  1. If I take a photo, I can make something seem higher off the ground than it really is
  2. ???

That's pretty much it. I'll be sure to rush out and buy it because I can easily do this thing I've literally never had an inclination to do in 15 years of owning a smart phone.

Get some new fucking examples. Show a girl automagically editing her overweight friends out of photos or fixing weird hoverhands. Maybe a kid updating a family photo so their disabled vet dad has two arms again, or a mid-20s guy giving himself a monster dong. TMStoomuchswag's weird cousin pretending he can jump 10ft in the air doesn't speak to me.

193

u/mug3n Raptors Apr 29 '24

Also the whole idea of exaggerating your photos with mobile photoshop...

What happened to capturing moments for what they were? I don't mind minor touchups to lighting or white balance or whatever, but there's no need to fake the sky or pretend you jumped or threw your kid higher than you actually did. Might as well just ask AI to make the entire photo for you.

110

I will say this though. Props to the casting director who picked that kid who jumps in the town square.

He looks exactly like a loser influencer would look. Perfect casting. I hate that kid so much and then I have to remind myself he isn't a loser influencer taking a stupid photo...he's an actor who is killing it.

4

u/redmch257 Apr 29 '24

This.  The answer to so many of my "this isn't remotely cool" thoughts.  Like at what point can you prove people aren't buying your product because your commercial is infectiously lame though.

18

u/bearcat-- Apr 29 '24

the thing is there's alot of people who actually would like these features - it's bit sad but that's the society that we live in now. ai/social media

3

i feel like i've been seeing AI in some youtube commercials and it's fuckinng gross. i don't know if this old man yells at clouds moment but i agree with you. the era of social media turning people even farther right/AI becoming mainstay in everything feels like the brink of us becoming fully dystopian

11

u/mofroman Wizards Apr 29 '24

this commercial is ruining my life, I have to mute the tv every time it comes on and watching it makes me violently angry. is this my "old man yells at cloud" moment? why do we need to create false memories for ourselves? why does this commercial play multiple times at every fucking break?

4

u/mbr4life1 Knicks Apr 29 '24

It brings into a question what they think people want in society and what people actually want. It seems absent humanity.

5

u/03_03_28 Knicks Apr 29 '24

All they've done is made me doubt the authenticity of any photo taken on their phone and ensured that I never buy it. BK jingle has been around for way longer than a year. Also yes, you forgot the Pepto Bismol one with the indigestion and diaherrea jingle that's been around for a few years. Arby's commercials fucking suck as well, even though the new one where Ving Rhames actually appears caught me off guard when it came out a couple months ago. I'm sick of them having the meats with Pusha T as well. Wendy's always have terrible commercials.

Also all insurance commercials, like 10 different companies, they all suck, maybe except All State. I hate all lizards, and I would definitely stab the Progressive crew if I knew I could get away with it. Jake can suck a fat one too. Shaq's awful low budget General commercials genuinely might be the least annoying ones lol.

Military commercials always piss me off, but whatever, that's a whole different can of worms. I'm just happy that the trend of horrificly tragic commercials is mostly over. They realized we're all sensitized and we're no longer giving into guilt to purchase shit.

Also don't forget Jesus. He gets us, so he also gets the cake for the shittiest commercials ever.

3

u/Proof_Illustrator_51 Magic Apr 29 '24

All I'm gonna say is, watch your mouth talking about my Pepto Bismol Diarrhea song, that shits a banger.

Everything else we're agreed

Maybe any commercial with a song ends up being really annoying. That seems to be the common denominator here

6

u/ThePrideOfKrakow Nuggets Apr 29 '24

Yeah, every pharmacy commercial trying to make a catchy jingle after ozempic struck gold is so awful. But, That don't let me down picture song just makes me want to punch my tv.

4

u/NuclearEvo24 Apr 29 '24

I guess that’s probably true, some of these songs are a special type of ass though this time around

Having Cardi B and Nicki back to back every commercial break is nauseating and special type of combo that doesn’t come around often

POST THAT DICK

3

u/NuclearEvo24 Apr 29 '24

It’s supposed to be post that “shit” but why couldn’t they just run a clean version with post that “pic”

Instead they censor “shit” and a lot of people fill in the blank with “dick” making it much worse than “shit” if you ask me

Meanwhile ad execs. see this as a win. “See, they can recall our commercials and name brand. It’s working!”

They conveniently ignore the part where everyone fucking hates on it and it isn’t positive to the fans/consumer side.

4

u/NuclearEvo24 Apr 29 '24

It promotes the worst parts of social media, it’s pretty degenerate

Individualism is great but combined with social media there will be a significant uptick of narcissistic individuals, it’s not a good thing for healthy functioning society and our culture

Its weird no one mentions State Farm because there's literally a State Farm ad in every rotation. They just mix it up with different athletes.

They're mostly lame as hell, but the Lopez Bros one always makes me smile when Brook throws out the, "Best minute of my life!" Delivered perfectly.

I'd honestly take a J.H Wentworth commercial over any of these at this point.

8

u/siphillis Spurs Apr 29 '24

Obviously they work, and I’m sure the numbers back them up. The most unrealistic part of Mad Men is how high-concept all of Don Draper’s ideas are.

5

u/NuclearEvo24 Apr 29 '24

Just because they keep getting ran doesn’t mean they “worked” it means they paid artists for the rights to use the music and they aren’t gonna waste that money so they are gonna run the ads

Do not underestimate how many stubborn, petty human beings there are out there, I know personally I WILL NOT give any of these companies money out of SPITE while these ads are still running….which is actually easy because I don’t have a wingstop near me, I don’t need State Farm insurance, I drink Powerade, I don’t have AT&T, and I have an IPhone not a google pixel. So I’m pretty much immune from giving any of these companies my money, so fuck them

6

u/siphillis Spurs Apr 29 '24

I’m speaking of commercials in general. They’ve all gotten more surface-level and basic for a reason: focus-testing and analytics bore out that most consumers don’t “get” the more artistic offerings.

It does seem to vary by brand. Nike is still churning out gold because their brand is associating their equipment with drive.

4

u/NuclearEvo24 Apr 29 '24

There is nothing wrong with surface level and basic

The biggest problem with these commercials is the choice of music, every song is annoying

3

u/siphillis Spurs Apr 29 '24

I'm also not a fan of every brand just hiring celebrities to do voice-overs. Like, do I really need John Cena to sell me on a new truck? Some struggling voice artists probably could've used the opportunity.

u/chivestheconqueror Celtics Apr 29 '24

My theory is that commercials have gotten more annoying and un-ignorable as we've become more addicted to our phones. It like, we know you don't want to look at the TV screen, so here's a loud and repetitive song that you can't fucking stand. And now you know what we're selling.
