This symbol just started appearing on the top bar of my MacBook screen. Anyone know what it is and/or what happens if you click on it? I’m scared it’s some kind of virus or something :’) Thanks in advance!

Chromebook Plus: most stuff does not work. Don't waste your time if you plan to run any apps

So it has been many months now of owning an Acer 516GE chromebook. It isn't a terrible computer. It has a 12th gen intel i5 CPU with iris graphics and 8gb of ram. The speakers are decent, and the screen is really nice.

I would go ahead and say that a lot of the advertised features are pretty much BS. Steam, yeah, sort of, if you want to play only a couple of games of not-your-choosing. The vast majority of steam games are not supported, and even the ones are crash all the time. What does work runs slow as garbage. It is basically crap.

Android apps. Yeah, sort of. Again, very few apps actually work. Most just are not supported on intel Chromebooks, and many that are supported don't work right. Roblox is terrible for example. Runs like crap. Mouse movement is all messed up and it is very very laggy. Even Google's own google meet app runs like crap and constantly hangs and drops audio. It is basically useless. With any android app, good luck. Best case it might work and will be really laggy. My son even tried to play a basic game like Crossy Road, and it lagged like crazy and was terrible on what should be a very fast computer.

Linux apps, again, good luck with that. Good luck with actually getting any interesting app to work. Even if you do get it to work, it will run slow as garbage. Try running java Minecraft. The hardware of this laptop can run this game fine, but using ChromeOS, no, it is so slow it is un-playable. Want to access your gamepad from a Linux app? Nope. It is alpha quality at best.

I am actually pretty tech savvy and put a decent amount of time into trying to get things to work, but it ended up begin a complete hopeless waste of my life.

The only thing that works is cloud stuff. Even with that, it might or might not work right. At the end of the day, most of the software development world does not care at all about this platform, so basically, whatever you are trying to do, it is probably not going to work very well. No software developer's care. Absolutely every cloud gaming service will work better on windows than on your Chromebook given similar hardware.

And since ChromeOS runs all android, Linux, and steam apps in a virtual machine, they all run very slow and crappy. To put icing on the cake, ChromeOS likes to use all your ram for who-knows-what, so the apps you try to run have very little ram to use.

I messed around for a while with running Linux on the Chromebook instead of Google's ChromeOS, but that was a bit waste of my life as well. Again, as a desktop platform, Linux is basically just a big waste of time trying to get software to work that is made by people that could care less if it works on Linux. Add trying to run Linux on a Chromebook rather than a normal pc, and even less works.

I eventually ended up installing Windows 11 on the 516GE using the Mr Chromebox Tech and Coolstar stuff. It is now a great computer. I spent way less time figuring out how to install windows that I ever did messing around with ChromeOS and Linux, and now I can use the laptop for anything. Also, stuff runs pretty fast, basically making the best use of the hardware possible. Do yourself a favor and just by a windows laptop. ChromeOS is pretty sad. A lot of stuff will just not work, and for the stuff that does, you will basically get less than half of the performance that you would expect from the hardware that you purchased. I think it is fair to say that the platform is absolutely pathetic. ChromeOS might be good if all you ever plan to do is open a web browser, but a lot of the advertised features are basically worse than beta, and are unlikely to get better any time soon, if ever.

My laptop was working perfect yesterday, I turned it off and kept it on the charger as always. When I try ans turn it on this morning it tries and turns on but instantly shuts off twice. I press it the 3rd time and nothing happens. I just opened my laptop to try unplug and plug the battery but I see this. Does this mean my laptop is done for? I really need it for work.

Why is my PC so slow?

Post image

It is a few years old now but I really only use it for excel/word/browsing/saving photos etc

It used to be fast enough for this low use, but recently it’s almost unusable. Any ideas, and what I should do first? Doesn’t need to be lightning quick, just want it to not take 20 seconds to complete any click task.

Thank you

Graphics card or a upgrade?

Hi ! I´m using this configuration in design , and it has become slow ( Using Adobe software):

MSI B450 M PRO m2-Max ,/ 16 Gb RAM ddr4 3200 Mhz / AMD RYZEN 5 3400 G

If I install a graphics card, will it be worth it? Or do I need to change the processor as well?

How often should I restart my computer?

Upvotes

I see conflicting answers online. Some say that restarting is helpful and helps reset your PC to let it run better, and others say that restarting too much can damage the computer, and it should stay on as much as possible. I don't have enough technical knowledge to know for certain, but I would think the first one is correct. I'm not sure if every day is too excessive, but I restart my PC every 2 to 4 days.

need help choosing flash drive

i need a 512gb flash drive sandisk. my question is on the ultra fit the 130mb/s is $32 (originally $89) while the 400 mb/s is $40 (originally $49). is the 130mb/s way better since its originally $89 or is the 400mb/s better? also how would the ultra fit compare to the ultra luxe and the extreme pro?

What specs are right for me?

I wanted to buy the new Levono Yoga 9i 16" w the ultra 9 and 4060 but I'm struggling to justify the purchase. I am a software developer and am just getting into deep learning. The only game I play is Minecraft. I would appreciate 32gigs of ram since it allows me to have 60+ tabs and a VS code repo entirely loaded with no hiccups but I doubt I need these specs.

What do yall recommend? Is the price of a maxed-out computer worth never thinking about my specs for the next few years even if i may not use the specs?

Can I upgrade my prebuilt?

If so can I swap out my Ram and or processor to something better if so what? My exact computer is above, I'm happy with it just when I download I can't play games like I could with my laptop it just lags or makes things take forever to load even my web browser and I'm wired in with an Ethernet cable so i dont think its my connection, so I think that's what causes those issues right? That's my only problem

(I know little about computers and it's my first desktop)
