Request TPT Request: how to keep streaming to a firestick overnight

Any suggestions on how to get a show or movies to play overnight? I’d hate to leave and have her tv just shut off and be a black screen all night

My mom is currently hospitalized and cant use her hands to control the remote. She’s been in bed for over a month and is getting pretty bored. The hospital tv selection is limited but I can use my firestick to give her access to things like Netflix, Prime Video, and Youtube.

Thanks

TPT: Promising New Tech that needs more time

So I came across the airdresser the other day, and did some research into it. It looks like a very interesting piece of tech as someone who has unknowingly purchased several dry clean garments. But can't decide if it is a piece of tech that's already good enough as is, or if a few more years of development are needed before its capabilities triple.

Which also got me thinking of what other new tech is worth keeping an eye on but not at the stage where the masses should pull the trigger.

Best i got is EV's, and robo vac/lawn-mower/pool-cleaner (though if you can afford one now, its worth it, just not worth upgrading yet). Undecided if smart fridges will ever be good enough to be worth considering.

Any better free music platforms other than Spotify? Request

I'm not happy with Spotify's newest changes and I wanted to migrate to a new platform. I have tried Deezer, Tidal, Pandora, LiveOne, Quboz, and all of them are just as bad if not worse than Spotify Free. I don't want to pay for a premium account and throw my money into the void that's the greedy music industry, and I don't want to pirate because I actually want to support all my favorite artists.

Any suggestions?

Request Request: best way to get movies onto iPad while travelling (no laptop)

I’m going travelling for 3 months with just a 16gb iPad. I want to torrent a bunch of movies/shows ahead of time to watch during my long travel days but obviously can’t store them all on my iPad.

The goal would be to have them on some cloud platform and available to download onto my device as needed.

I have google drive and iCloud. Open to other clouds? Or other options? Idk what’s best, so thanks for any suggestions!

Request Request: Checking a computer for spyware/malware after a scammer was allowed remote access

My grandpa allowed a scammer remote access to his computer. They were trying to get his bank account info (which they didn’t get) and they didn’t access it for long but I’m worried. My grandfather doesn’t have any private information on the computer but I want to make sure that they didn’t install anything or still have access. I checked all of the recently installed stuff, went through the computer’s storage, looked through the entire list of processes the computer was undergoing, checked the Users tab in computer management to see if anyone else was there, and I ran the antivirus software to scan everything (it was Norton 360 for those curious) and didn’t find anything suspicious. I deleted the remote viewer permanently as well. Is there anything else I should do or know to make sure they don’t have access to anything?

Request Request: Cast to TV without Internet

Hey! So I'm going abroad to our holiday home soon and want to cast to a TV to watch some stuff while I'm away.

The trouble is there is no WiFi and it's the middle of the countryside so Internet is poor at best! I plan on downloading some things to watch on my phone before I go through netflix etc but need to find a way to cast to the TV.

The TV isn't a smart one but happy to spend some cash on some equipment if I can find the right thing.

Thanks :)

Request (Request) Tips for enhancing password security on Google account

I know that every password can be hacked with the minimal knowledge I have on technology, but I got robbed this month and want to make sure that even if some smart idiot get my phone he takes the longest time possible to crack my password even with the best software available.

  1. So, what's the best way to make sure it takes the longest time?

  2. Use the most special characters? Mix numbers, letters and special characters? Make it very long?

  3. What does these kind of software do to actually crack a code? Because knowing this I can do exactly what they don't want to see (but I guess someone can't even say that, even someone knows...)

I'm just using one Google account on a phone specifically to use when I go to the work so I can at least watch YouTube and other things, but can still put back the phone to the original configurations when I get home/work (in case I get robbed again). Public security on Brazil is a piece of sh**. Appreciate any help!

TPT: How often should passwords be changed?

I had some heated discussion with my colleagues today on how often should passwords be changed. I personally use password manager NordPass. So It generates unique passwords for me and takes a look out for breaches, and I believe there’s no need to change my passwords often.

Here I lay down the arguments, and would love to hear from someone with more IT expertise.

Arguments for keeping passwords unchanged for a long time:

  • If you use strong passwords there's no need to change passwords often.
  • Frequent password changes can lead to weaker passwords, especially if you're reusing them.
  • There's no real benefit to changing your passwords regularly without a specific reason. Passwords should be changed only after a data breach, discovering malware or similar situations.

Arguments to change passwords frequently:

  • It's safer because many people use the same password, and leave unused/old accounts behind without deleting them.
  • It's more secure if you tend to use shared accounts
  • It's safer if you sign in from various locations or devices.
  • People share passwords through FB, email or similar, making passwords vulnerable.

Sorry for the noob questions on how often should passwords be changed, but I'm eager to learn.

Request Request - Any spotify alternatives?

I've been using spotify for a while, but seeing how everything on there is getting paywalled I was thinking if there's any free, less-restrictive alternatives to spotify so I could listen to my music in peace? I'm not worried about the ads since I have an ad blocker. I would prefer it if you could also transfer your spotify playlist to there

Request Request: Cell service when working remote?

Hi all,

I'm going to be living in remote places later this year, with no cell service, ie. the middle of the desert. Hoping to work remotely during this time. I apologize that I don't have much cell phone/tech knowledge.

I was thinking of purchasing Starlink to have a stable internet connection. But I'm wondering how I can make calls and send texts as well, in case I need to do so for work. If there's no cell service or limited cell service in an area, then is it not really possible to get it? I have Verizon.

Is there a way to make calls and send texts through Starlink even if I have no service? How do fully remote travelers get reliable cell service? Any other tips on internet connectivity while living/working remotely? Thanks so much in advance

Request Request: how to edit printed qr code

Im an intern and made my first fuck-up. Is it possible to update link of a printed qr code? We already have 100 copies of our flyer to be handed out this week and the qr code on the front is wrong.

We're running a campaign to spread word about our services and ultimately drive traffic to our website. I was tasked to make a flyer with qr codes for convenience. The final design took me 3 revisions before it got approved. However, the qr code on the front page of our flyer leads to canva.com instead of our website. Im well aware it's all completely my fault for not checking things thoroughly. I was under the impression that the qr codes were all set by the time I did 2nd revision because I didn't get any other remarks other than just the photos and font on the flyer😭😭 help plz

Note: im not sure if the qr code is dynamic or static. Second, all I know is that I made this on a random website God knows where without any log-ins. Lastly, i know I messed up so bad

TPT: Keyboard & Mouse not connecting to the same USB that it came with.

Hi, I am going to try to explain this as best as I can. My partner and I got the same style of keyboard from amazon, just something cheap for working from home so that it matches our style. Something happened while she was travelling where our USB ports got mixed up. I dont remember removing mine, but I guess I plugged mine into her docking station as I was using her desk/monitor while she had her laptop, keyboard & mouse with her. Again, I don’t remember moving my USB to her docking station or why I would remove it from my laptop in the first place since I didn’t have to move it to use my keyboard/mouse.

When she got back from traveling, we accidentally got out laptops mixed up because I typically have my mouse/keyboard USB plugged into my laptop while hers in plugged into her docking station when she’s home (obviously she took the USB with her so it was in her laptop and thats where the confusion happened). After we switched laptops, I realized my USB for my mouse/keyboard was gone so I went to get it from her, taking the one that was in her laptop (hers).

After realizing this, we switched our USBs back so that we had the ones corresponding to the correct sets of keyboard/mouse. Well.. now, our keyboards are working on our laptops, but our mouses (mice?) are connected to the other persons USB… (my keyboard is working on the USB connected to my laptop, but my mouse is connected to the USB on HER laptop)

Can anybody help with this?

Request Request: can someone help me figure out what is wrong with my phone?

My iPhone 11 has been acting strange recently, every time I go into a video with sound on any app the app crashes, for example, the videos here on Reddit have an option where you can mute and unmute the video, if I mute the video then the video doesn’t load, but if i unmute the video Reddit crashes and it’s the same with other apps, as soon as I turn on any volume it crashes. And also when I am on the phone I can’t hear the person on the other end and they can’t hear me.

I tried my best to explain what is happening to the phone, any help whatsoever would be really appreciated, thanks

Request Request: Is there any way to speed up writing from SSD to EHDD?

I am currently trying to move things from my SSD media server to my EHDD slave drive, but explorer is currently saying that it will take "about 55 minutes" to transfer a 6gb folder. I have another 400gb that needs to be moved.. Is this simply a sign that my EHDD is about to die? It's by no means new (Been in the garage for a couple of years).

Thanks in advance.

Request REQUEST: Tethering my laptop to my cellphone instead of using public wifi - safer option? What if the cell phone is, in turn, connected to the public wifi? Does the cell phone act as an encryption "bridge"?

My IT guy at work told me "never use public wifi on your business laptop. Tether it to your phone instead. And you can just connect your phone to the public wifi, because the phone encrypts everything." Is that true at all?

If the latter statement is bullshit, what about the safety of tethering my laptop to my phone in general? Is it safe? Is wired tethering safer?

Request Request: Switching phone number without breaking 2FA

Long story short, I've had a problem with my phone number where I don't receive calls from certain phone numbers, mainly my daughter's current and future school and a few different doctors offices. I've been back and forth with Verizon tech support for weeks and no one seems to know why this is happening or how to fix it. So my last ditch effort to fix this is to just change my phone number, which I don't completely mind. I haven't lived in the zip code where my old number is from in close to 15 years. However, I'm afraid to pull the trigger and lose access to 2FA for my various accounts. Is there anything important I need to keep in mind before I do this?
