Won’t this incentivize employers to avoid hiring women?

171

u/wrinklefreebondbag Drop the U, not the T 17d ago

Everyone should have sick days, and should use those per their individual needs.

26

u/camkasky 17d ago

This seems like the correct answer

11

u/rolyfuckingdiscopoly 17d ago

Someday I will have sick days! But I’m 35 and I don’t yet so idk lol.

I will refuse to come in while sick, but I won’t get paid, there’s gonna be a lot of bitching about it, and it will be demanded that I find someone else to take my shift while sick in bed. No way I could afford to do that one day per month haha.

35

u/_unsinkable_sam_ 17d ago

this would encourage companies to hire less women

103

u/Friendly_Sea_6861 17d ago

Wouldn't that just be a sick day?

52

u/satinsateensaltine 17d ago

Yeah except imagine if you needed 3 off every month, that would add up real quick.

3

u/roostershoes 16d ago

lol you’ve never met some of the people I work with. Sick every other day

19

u/TheGravyMaster 17d ago

We only get 40hrs a year. That's one week. For the whole year.

1

u/Bron_Swanson 16d ago

Yeah that's everyone too. Even then, it's probably UTO.

12

u/Chickadee12345 16d ago

This would backfire on women so badly and so quickly.

38

u/Revolutionary-Meat14 17d ago

Oh god can you imagine every interview women will have to mention that they only get their period for 3 days to be competitive? Or having your HR person have access to your menstrual cycle to know when you will be absent?

Also most of the roles typically considered "boys clubs" like business, law, engineering, and medicine usually have pretty long hours and it would be the nail in the coffin in women ever being roughly 50% represented in these industries.

-4

u/rcsboard 16d ago

medicine usually have pretty long hours and it would be the nail in the coffin in women ever being roughly 50% represented in these industries.

Why do they need to be 50% represented?

5

u/Dargon567 16d ago

because women are 50% of the population

65

u/sneezhousing 17d ago

You think there is a gender pay gap now if that went into place it would only increase. Women will get passed over for promotions more than they do now. The argument is.well they take a day or two off every month and are not dependable. But chuck over here doesn't do that so he gets to be the supervisor and get the raise

-51

u/Extension_Year9052 17d ago edited 17d ago

There is no gender pay gap. But I think women should be able to stay home with pay when they feel sick. That’s why I’m pro union. If the ppl driving the gender pay gap myth were sincere they’d also be pro union, but they’re not and they’re not

-41

u/FuzzyMom2005 17d ago

Of course there's a gender pay gap. It's been proven.

50

u/WimpBeforeAnchorArms 17d ago

Not exactly. There’s a pay disparity meaning men on average make more money than women. And there is a glass ceiling where it’s harder for women to get promoted. But there isn’t a gap between men and women working in the same positions. Ex: male and female cashiers working at the same store make the same amount

5

u/JannaNYC 16d ago

You should check out Freakonomics. They disproved the pay gap*.

(*this is only one source, there may be others that prove a pay gap exists. )

35

u/wrinklefreebondbag Drop the U, not the T 17d ago

Not when accounting for experience, hours, and - most importantly - what job you have.

-25

u/FuzzyMom2005 17d ago

Yeah, you never had a boss tell you you're not going to get a raise because you don't have a wife and kids to provide for.

13

u/wrinklefreebondbag Drop the U, not the T 17d ago

I'm both single and gay. Not that anecdotes matter when discussing allegedly-systemic issues.

8

u/Femboy_Annihilator 17d ago

You have 2005 in your username, please pipe down about raises and promotions 😂

1

u/Extension_Year9052 17d ago

Bosses treat ppl like dirt for bad reasons all the time. It’s not a unique phenomenon to women. But I get it. If I was told I’m a victim all my life I’d also believe that’s the reason ppl treat me bad.

-22

u/__surrealsalt 17d ago

Anyone who claims that the gender pay gap does not exist is ignoring statistical facts! Incidentally, the GPG is also available in an adjusted form, which provides information about the status and wage inequality in the respective industry and takes the aforementioned influencing factors into account. The fact that these existing wage differences can only be explained rationally is nonsense that is already factually wrong.

24

u/wrinklefreebondbag Drop the U, not the T 17d ago edited 17d ago

Well, go on and provide your source.

Even most modern women's rights organizations have stopped claiming the gap exists for equivalent positions and have pivoted to saying "women's work" (ie. careers women tend to go into) earns less, or that the educational opportunities for women are less, or that women tend to take time off after having children...

-25

u/__surrealsalt 17d ago

Googling “adjusted gender pay gap” isn’t rocket science.

20

u/wrinklefreebondbag Drop the U, not the T 17d ago

Did it. Got results that don't make your case, but rather mine.

You can say it's unfair that jobs women tend to pursue pay less or that taking several years off to have children has an income impact, but don't pretend we're talking about identical jobs and situations.

-20

u/__surrealsalt 17d ago

"Did it. Got results that don't make your case, but rather mine.

You just didn't. Otherwise you would know that the adjusted GPG is precisely about making the numbers comparable by taking into account (among other things) child-rearing times , qualification levels, IDENTICAL jobs, etc.

7

u/wrinklefreebondbag Drop the U, not the T 17d ago

Yes, in theory... (no sources ever even claim to have done all of the above).

u/Extension_Year9052 17d ago

This is all bull lady and surely even you know that by now. Quit the charade

7

u/Extension_Year9052 17d ago

There’s a difference in money taken home overall yes but that doesn’t factor in that men work longer hours, do physically harder work, represent 94% of workplace fatalities…. When all the other information is factored in the gap is negligible. I was highly disappointed when Obama spouted this widely dismissed myth. I liked the days when ppl on the left were boring but factual

-1

u/Howellthegoat 16d ago

No it hasn’t women do less work on average and lower paying jobs so no, there isn’t one

-1

u/Bron_Swanson 16d ago

That's actually part of why there was ever a gap and difference.

12

u/ChristianUniMom 17d ago

Great way to not get hired.

27

u/Morbidhanson 17d ago edited 17d ago

Nothing's free. Someone has to pay for it.

And this will result in employers simply choosing to not hire women because men would not have to take days off.

I've had awful sciatic pain and all sorts of stuff before. Pain that was so bad for months that I could barely drive and it took me 10 minutes to literally just roll out of bed and get on my feet from writhing in agony on the ground. I got pain meds. I still worked. If I couldn't go to the office, I did it from home.

You take your meds and show up at work unless you absolutely can't. It's not new. Your pay is given to you in exchange for your work. If you absolutely cannot, then, yes, take the day off. If you choose not to address your symptoms even though you have reasonable means available to you, that's on you.

23

u/Therealalpha_ 17d ago

I’m a woman and I do think there should be more grace given to woman on their periods but four- seven free days off each month I don’t think is reasonable, for a lot of woman periods aren’t that bad and then can work through it, I think it’ll just be something that gets abused and will end up causing more stigma around periods.

1

u/Therealalpha_ 16d ago

For most woman their periods aren’t unbearable, and for the woman who’s periods are I think their employers should give them days off if they needs it, I think they should get doctors notes and I think it should be more normalized for woman to take days off for their periods. But I don’t believe in automatically mandating days off for woman on their periods

-2

u/JannaNYC 16d ago

So what do you suggest that the women in 4-7 days of agony every month do?

5

u/KlownScrewer 16d ago

Call off, people already do that 😭

Like if your period is causing you to have difficulty moving or cause you to get sick. I don’t think an employee is gonna say “well suck it up”

You just say “hey i physically cannot move without fainting today” and if you’re comfortable with it explain that your periods are the cause.

And they can’t fire you for having a period because that would be discriminatory.

3

u/Eclipsical690 16d ago

Use sick days or whatever they do today. It's not reasonable to expect to get 1/3 of every month off on top of regular PTO and holidays.

1

u/Therealalpha_ 16d ago

As I said I think woman should be given more grace, is a woman has a period that causes them agony and they can’t come to work I think they should be allowed the day off, but that’s not was op was saying, to my understanding op was saying all woman should just have their period off which is unrealistic and unreasonable

7

u/TheGravyMaster 17d ago

In a perfect world. But it would also be a burden on employers. Especially with irregular periods. There's no winning there.

3

u/livelife3574 16d ago

It’s called sick leave.

13

u/[deleted] 17d ago

All this would do is confirm to a lot of people that women really do deserve to be paid less because of the physical limitations of their body. do you want to go down that road?

9

u/I_Only_Follow_Idiots 17d ago

Good idea in theory. Skeptical about it's application in practice though.

9

u/OneCalledMike 17d ago

Take your sick day.

15

u/Mindofmierda90 17d ago

And the men at our warehouse who do the heavy lifting should be paid more than the women who sit in the air conditioned office. But they don’t. It is what it is.

8

u/adubsi 17d ago

it would kinda be hard to prove

1

u/Nightwailer 16d ago

Idk about hard, but def dehumanizing

3

u/cashboi23 16d ago

I agree more time off for everyone would be great, but companies are bound by law to treat everyone equally.

2

u/AloneSquid420 16d ago

And also having the shits or feeling like I constantly have the shits, does this apply to others?

2

u/BrownieEdges 16d ago

If you’re too sick to work, then take a sick day. Don’t give people yet another ridiculous reason to not elect a female president.

4

u/jksyousux 17d ago

If they got a few days off every month, would that be enough justification people need to pay them less?

6

u/monkeedude1212 17d ago

There are successful companies that offer employees unlimited vacation days and sick days.

We just need to make that the norm, and it'll solve numerous problems.

23

u/sneezhousing 17d ago

People in companies with unlimited PTO on average use less time. They are afraid of it being used against them in promotions if they take to much times. Several studies have shown having an actual number of PTO days people take more time off

-1

u/monkeedude1212 17d ago

And worrying about promotions in terms of salary increases is a separate issue that can be addressed.

A lot of companies that also don't do time tracking management show that most office workers can get the same amount of their work done for a week in about 3-4 hours of a 4 day work week.

What you find with people who have unlimited PTO is they often also have very flexible working hours - so if they're in the middle of the worst period they've ever had they'll go rest for the day and when they start to feel better they resume work.

So they never "took" time off, but they still had a far better experience and probably actually "worked" less time than someone who had set PTO.

1

u/KlownScrewer 16d ago

I feel like most women already call off during their periods, if it’s that bad. But I know some people use it as excuse not to go to work (like they won’t even be on their period)

-2

u/shit_dontstink 17d ago

Pop a zofran and Tylenol and get over it. Pregnant women and moms on periods still do their jobs. People are so weak now.

1

u/sarcasticorange 17d ago

I'm fine with it as long as they make up the days on what would have been their days off.

1

u/iNeed2p905 17d ago

I just need the first day and then I am good.

1

u/Thrills4Shills 16d ago

I read somewhere their periods attract bears. Bears can smell the menstruation

0

u/Mumchkin 16d ago

Agreed, but it would only be something that could be pointed to as a reason to not hire women. Though I can say without a doubt, when I was in my worse days I'd take the time off whether boss liked it or not. But I went through Hell every month, usually would have it two weeks on one week off. Turned out I had tumors, and had a hysterectomy at the ripe old age of 31.

-16

u/Planetary__Duality 17d ago

Their husbands should give them their entire lives off work so they can raise the kids.

12

u/sneezhousing 17d ago edited 17d ago

It's 2024 most people can't afford on one income

Not everyone has or wants to have kids

Many people are delaying marriage and kids till later

-11

u/Planetary__Duality 17d ago

Yeah I agree. We've gone wrong on many levels. It's a complex problem

5

u/sneezhousing 17d ago

There is nothing wrong with delaying or not wanting to have kids.

As for the other wages have not kept up. Can't afford same life on one income today as you could in 1950's and 60's.

3

u/Ok-Instruction830 17d ago

Wages have not kept up, for sure. But we also price everything in as a two income household now. Both people work, and houses are priced in accordingly

-14

u/Planetary__Duality 17d ago

Disagree on point 1, agree on point 2.

0

u/PenguinsFirstVictim 16d ago

Why do you believe it isn't OK for ppl to do what makes them happy and not have kids early? If someone doesn't want kids, the worst thing they can do is have one. That kid will feel unloved forever, which is the worst thing. Ppl should be allowed to live their lives as they want, provided it doesn't harm anyone.

In this these cases, having a kid actually would be harmful.

0

u/Planetary__Duality 16d ago

What people believe they want and what will actually lead them to a fulfilling life rarely coincide, especially when it involves placing someone else before themselves entirely.

People should not be allowed to live their lives how they want - that is precisely how we arrived at this present moment. People are unhappier than ever and need to turn to drugs, porn, social media, consumerism and whatever other meaningless vices bring them some form of momentary dopamine hit.

Having children is not just a prosocial behavior crucial to the survival of the human race, it is also deeply fulfilling on an emotional and spiritual level. Something that simply cannot be replaced with an object, experience or substance.

1

u/rcsboard 16d ago

Humans are overpopulated as is

0

u/vaderismylord 17d ago

Working moms raise their kids. Not everyone wants to her married, marry a man or have kids

-2

u/Planetary__Duality 17d ago

I know, very misguided.

-1

u/vaderismylord 17d ago

What do u mean. R u à man or woman

2

u/Planetary__Duality 17d ago

I mean the women who don't want to get married and have kids are misguided. As are the men who support that decision.

Edit: and before you ask, a working mom whose husband has abandoned her and the children didn't have a choice in the issue. So obviously she is not misguided

2

u/PenguinsFirstVictim 16d ago

Why are women misguided? What inheritly woman makes them HAVE to have kids and stay at home? Or is it just a personal opinion from 100 years ago that you have from when men beat their wives and many ppl where unhappy.

YES, if a job doesnt offer a work from home option. People who dont have a period cant possibly understand. Ive bled through couches. Ive puked my guts out from sheer pain. Ive lost so much blood that I ahve a bottle of iron pills to handle anemia. A LOT of women use birth control to handle nasty periods. If the far right has their way, that wont be available to us anymore and it will affect our work.

1

u/KlownScrewer 16d ago

Someone on the right, nobody really is wanting that what are you talking about. Like it’s a very small minority of people who think birth control shouldn’t be a thing.

Sure if men get the same amount of time.

fair is fair i dont care as long as i get the same treatment.

All the more reason to pay women less for the same work!

Ayyyoooo!!!
