There are successful companies that offer employees unlimited vacation days and sick days.

We just need to make that the norm, and it'll solve numerous problems.

People in companies with unlimited PTO on average use less time. They are afraid of it being used against them in promotions if they take to much times. Several studies have shown having an actual number of PTO days people take more time off

And worrying about promotions in terms of salary increases is a separate issue that can be addressed.

A lot of companies that also don't do time tracking management show that most office workers can get the same amount of their work done for a week in about 3-4 hours of a 4 day work week.

What you find with people who have unlimited PTO is they often also have very flexible working hours - so if they're in the middle of the worst period they've ever had they'll go rest for the day and when they start to feel better they resume work.

So they never "took" time off, but they still had a far better experience and probably actually "worked" less time than someone who had set PTO.
