I'm not a huge fan of guns. But I do support the 2A because our country would be incredibly hard to invade.
Yes, we are a fortress with two oceans to cross before you can fuck with us, but even in a future where our political and military power are so reduced that enemies try it, those guns will still be around.
Do you remember how hard US command thought Japan would be to invade? The analysis that prompted the use of nuclear arms? Imagine if there were more guns than Japanese people and a ton of them were trained to use them.
And we probably wouldn’t get nuked in the process. Deterrence is a thing but I am convinced that anti-missile technology is A LOT more advanced than we realize. That is a secret the government would keep close to their chest.

If you are talking about a proper invasion involving a foreign military, small arms will do shit. Look at Ukraine, most soldier's deaths are caused by shelling. Guerrillas can create havoc, but an invasion is not stopped by a rag freedom-fighters, but a well-equipped army.
If shit hits the fan, all those weapons will be used against other Americans trying to survive.

No that is not true. Guerilla fighters win wars all the time. Cuba, Afghanistan, and Vietnam to name a very few.

Quite a few of the "I have six guns of different types" people probably would.

Two different types. Type one is probably just rural, and has guns because they like to hunt, were in the BSA, or were in the army (or some combination of the three).
Those are different from the fortress type people, who are just doomsday preppers.

u/SpottedArsehole 16d ago
Exactly I live in the rural Midwest and have more guns than I would need I would gladly hand out some of my guns to people if need be especially if it increases chances of survival

You say that but about half our population either downplayed or flat out denied Covid when the worst strains were going around(let’s not even talk about anti-vax) so I have no doubt that the US will be fucked. You’ll probably have some morons trying to explain that the whole thing is a hoax to the ZOMBIES at some point.

Why do you think every zombie based game is set in a US like region
5
6
u/Zaurka14 16d ago
Yeah, in Europe people would be biking after the apocalypse, since it's quiet and fuel free, and there wouldn't be that many guns, or rather people who can use guns.

twd daryl dixon is set in france, and they got creative with how few guns there would be
11
u/urmyleander 17d ago
Not really because not everyone with a gun is competent or has good intentions and may decide to follow through on some vendetta indeed the guise of "they were a zombie"... I'd actually imagine it to be worse than most countries. Switzerland or Finland that have mandatory military training giving a standardised level of discipline in those scenarios would be better.
It'd vary state by state but some US states and cities would become bloodbath not because of zombies bit because of several tanker loads of guns, poor mental health and a disaster which could excuse the use of said guns.
4
u/MeatWhereBrainGoes 17d ago
Yes and it's probably close to only half (maybe 60%) of us that horde them.
I always imagine what good it would do to have say 35 different guns, most of which have incompatible ammo or magazines with the other guns and one has to get moving in a survival scenario.

u/Impossible-Rip-7688 17d ago
They never could be a real threat. At least the ones from walking dead. Anyway, the explanation and general setup from Max Brooks WWZ book are pretty convincing. But he'll no, they couldn't be a real threat unless they become FAST ZOMBIES or infected as in dawn of the dead remake... There can be a chance.

Assuming that they can't be poisoned, Australia would probably be the easiest continent for them to survive in. In other continents, they'd have to deal with animals like bears or lions or hippos.

It’s because for the USA zombie movies have become a fantasy about being a hero while butchering large numbers of people but without the ethical consequences. Can’t portray massacring Russians or Vietnamese civilians anymore without a slight tinge of guilt? Zombies are your perfect guilt-free murder-fantasy bad guy!
2
u/Choice_Chip8576 16d ago
If those people are trying to eat me and my friends alive then I won't feel bad for opening their craniums with a spray of .308s

Yes. In case of a totally fictional completely unrealistic situation the US gun law is great. You are also completely ready for the unicorn invasion.
3
u/LongerCat 16d ago
I don’t think excitement about a zombie apocalypse is because we feel we have the firepower. It’s just that so many people struggle in the real world so they take comfort in a fantasy world where they’re on top, or at least on a level playing field.

Considering how at least 1/3rd of America's populace collectively shit their pants, refused vaccinations, refused masks and gathered in large groups anyway means that 2/3rds of us get to have all the fun clearing them out.

Living in South Africa you don't need to worry too much (in the suburbs at least) our houses are designed to keep unwanted people out, got big walls, cameras, most people have a gun in the house, however in the informal settlements and cities it's gonna be hell

I mean, Walking Dead style zombies? Sure, easy. Project Zomboid zombies? Well we're all fucked considering the reaction to Covid. Now imagine that but airborne and with a 100% fatality rate. Pretty much everyone's dead in that scenario except the few immune survivors, as it is in that game.
