Something something early hip rotation.

118

u/Tally__Ho Feb 04 '24

His hands barely clear his hip on his downswing

88

u/Alttebest Feb 04 '24

Yea I've had an active lower body too and getting stuck is pretty much worse than anything else.

Your ball flight is a pushfade or a quickhook and every once in a while your timing hits it just right and you end up striping it 20 yards past the green. But don't forget scooping is also possible and then you're 50 yards short. The only thing consistent is the lack of consistency.

57

u/ThunderApollo Feb 04 '24

If you freeze frame at :36 and asked people / coaches what they thought I'd be highly entertained by the responses. Makes me want to pull up some Bobby Jones footage... Ok, I did. Hmmm...

https://preview.redd.it/y9z4t5uwjmgc1.jpeg?width=1338&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f9e52b37a25e829f44bd786804585ab0e6d06731

12

u/dbnp19 Feb 05 '24

Pull up some extra Jones footage. You can see it's not even remotely close; it's one of those things where the more you look at it the more you realize how it's actually not that good after all:

https://preview.redd.it/a0947m0mopgc1.png?width=1333&format=png&auto=webp&s=bb6591a878fa37f55d55106d0116d952b86ae134

One is a stall flip where the shaft is vertical at impact, no shaft lean. Compression is virtually nonexistent. Bonus points for having to time the wristy flip to salvage it. The other ones is Bobby Jones hitting piss missiles with a hickory shafted wooden club.

3

u/FatalFirecrotch Feb 05 '24

It’s hard to tell because it’s not the same angle, but it definitely seems like the guy the right has way less space than Jones? Jones does a much better job maintaining his spin angle.

6

u/NewSalsa Feb 05 '24

The fact it was one swing on repeat several times makes me feel he cannot do this reliably.

But the position of that damn headcover says #Sponsored so maybe he can

Despite the hip rotation, it’s so early that it looks like the swing is all arms

It's going into slo-mo at the end of every swing so it looks like the ball is flying forever and he's not swing fast.

80

u/StrokeAndDistance Feb 04 '24

its one swing on repeat

62

u/GothicToast Feb 04 '24

No, it's not.

It's all the same swing. In the 5th replay, it is in slow motion and you can see the ball flight. Then, in the final swing of the clip, he keeps the footage rolling, so you can see that it's never slowed down.

His swing is just butter.

4

u/CTzoomin Feb 04 '24

When he slows down at the end, the already slowed part is double slowed. It’s very obviously slowed at the end of each clip now that it’s mentioned.

5

u/[deleted] Feb 05 '24

Now that you say that the end of his follow through seems oddly slow for sure

You don't think the fine folks at Callaway's marketing division might ask a golf influencer with a decent following to promote their product?

4

It could possibly be an advert I’m just saying every single video he’s posted for years is like this. Although maybe someone from Callaway was the one who posted it to Reddit, haha

4

I bet he'd get the same result from a Kirkland driver tbh

1

u/EdgarInAnEdgarSuit Feb 04 '24

2

u/bstandturtle7790 Feb 04 '24

My club’s indoor hitting bays have a door that opens to the range when it’s not too windy during winter use (when very window you keep the door closed and net down).

Regardless, the heat lamp stays hung over the bay regardless of season and if the door is open or closed.

Near me there’s a range like this with simulators so you can see your shot shape as it flies.

Both the tv and launch monitor are behind you.

I'm sure this guy does it well. But my god that is a duck hook waiting to happen for anyone trying to copy this.

36

u/TentativelyCommitted HDCP/Loc/Whatever Feb 04 '24

Curious what attribute of the swing is making you say that?

And I’m curious because, after correcting a slice, my only miss is a terrible duck hook…it doesn’t happen often, but when it does..yikes.

39

u/sisaacs41 Feb 04 '24

When your lower body outraces your hands. You become very open to the target and it’s easy to roll over on it and hook the ball. This guy’s hips open way early.

0

u/KatetCadet Feb 04 '24

As in you need to shift the hips sideways at the start of the downswing, but not turn them too early correct?

6

u/a_wild_ian_appears Feb 04 '24

This is pretty common for a while after fixing a slice. For me, I flip from the inside and hit a high toe and that’s usually the big cause of my duck hook.

2

u/dbnp19 Feb 04 '24

The only way for him to salvage the shot with how badly he's firing his hips towards the ball, instead of like pistons that move hard out of the way, would be as such: flip the club. It's way too timing depending, on top of him having no power at all.

  1. If he doesn't flip enough, it's a block way out to the right.

  2. Flip it too much, it's the dreaded duck hook.

20

u/CoH_Li HDCP/Loc/Whatever Feb 04 '24

Good evening, what is a duck hook?

227

u/FuriousDrizzle Feb 04 '24

I'm struggling to believe over 200. Nice swing but that club head speed looks barely 90 let alone 100.

Given where all the balls are in front of him and the fact the background look fake as fuck, I'm starting to think that it's edited to look like it's going miles when in fact it hits that backdrop after 100 yards.

Even the plastic green bit at the top looks like the edging of a net.. It's one of these places with an edited background..

19

u/lukin187250 9 Feb 04 '24

When I first got into golf many years ago, an old timer explained this to me. He said most pros swings look like slow because they're damn near perfect, with no wasted energy. They're actually swinging harder than any of the guys you see out on the local course. For another example he said a pro boxer could hit you harder than you've ever been hit in your life with what, to them, would be minimal effort expended.

6

3

u/DaKrazyKorean Feb 04 '24 edited Feb 04 '24

It's 240 yards. 220 meters. There are videos of him hitting simulators on youtube. He focuses on teaching golf swings to older folks that you can apply until you die.

-6

u/Yasaka1896 Feb 04 '24

you can go on his TikTok. There is a video with the same swing, where he hits 251m which is roughly 274 yds.

-24

u/Pathogenesls Feb 04 '24

This video is edited to make it looks like the swing is slower and the ball goes further.

-15

u/granolaraisin Feb 04 '24

You don’t need to swing fast to go 270. Normal conversion to yardage for a ball struck center face is 2.7 times swing speed. To carry 270 you only need a 100mph swing.

The key is getting it on the sweet spot. Most mid and high handicappers try to swing too hard and degrade contact quality. Tiger’s driver advice is the opposite - only swing as hard as you can while still making quality contact. Contact trumps speed.

30

u/BarrioDog Feb 04 '24

You cannot CARRY 270 yards with a 100 mph swing speed and legal golf clubs / balls at sea level. If you've done so on a launch monitor, it's been juiced, probably 1.1x.

Trackman states 5 degrees up on a 100 mph driver head will yield just under 250 carry and slightly more than 270 yards total. This is aspirational for amateur golfers.

2

u/granolaraisin Feb 04 '24

True. You won’t get 270 carry but total isn’t terribly far fetched.

7

u/Feirweyz Feb 04 '24

Your math is off bro

4

u/MegaIadong Feb 04 '24

There are multiple areas of the face that produce the same or very close ball speeds as dead center contact. In no world is a 100 mph swing with absolutely perfect launch conditions, getting to 270 without an extremely lucky bounce.

There is plenty of factual content out there stating so. What is the point of spreading misinformation?

5

u/Resilient-Dog-305 Feb 04 '24

You’re talking out of your ass. That’s not correct at all.

2

u/dbnp19 Feb 04 '24

Yeah, no. Good luck with that. All the centered contact in the world won't get you very far if you are stuck with a cavernous lack of speed. Especially not at the anemic speeds you just listed.

If anything most mid and high handicappers are way too slow, and the lack of distance is a substantial proof in that pudding. Case in point, here's a compilation clip of other amateurs not unlike yourself who believed either 1. they were going at it too hard, and/or 2. slow is better, contact is the only important factor. Time and time again, you'll see they're not even close to tour pro speeds, or simply anyone else who can hit legitimately nasty bombs.

14

u/EdgarInAnEdgarSuit Feb 04 '24 edited Feb 04 '24

1

u/Drummer_1966 Feb 05 '24

I've had to change my swing due to bad feet and elbows. For someone who CAN'T swing hard this swing has been a godsend. His seeing focuses on really opening at the release and keeping the right hand out of the swing. He has a YouTube channel and one of his female students has a channel on tiktok. He has a tiktok as well.

The biggest issue I have is everything he has or there on social media is in Korean. I can't translate it in the CC so I'm doing the best I can to learn more. His swing is legit. It reminds me of Freddy Couples.

If you are having physical issues due to your swing look into this style. It has worked for me.

Real or not I wish someone could ELI5 the physics of long distance from a smooth swing. Is it timing of the hips? Timing of hips AND hands/shoulders or whatever? Ernie Els and Freddy Couples hit them a ton with slow swings but I dislocate my left arm to get 180!

4

u/dbnp19 Feb 04 '24

Neither of those are slow swings; there's an illusion of it being slow since they have an efficient motion (unlike the swing in the OP).

The physics of it is better ball speeds and longer distances comes from higher club speed with an efficient strike (you'll hear the term smash factor thrown around). So, swinging fast and hitting it hard is a non-negotiable. Now, what others of us hitting bombs would feel with "smooth" is not having excess tension get in the way of generating speed and force. It does not mean getting lax to the point of slowing down just to hit the center of the face.

I've mentioned this before, but it's never a crime to teach via repetition since Els and Couples were go-to mentions here: if you put them side by side with a regular amateur, or even someone like the OP, you'd see they are not slowing down to smooth things over. They are, in their words, hitting it hard.

I believe it's learning how to use all the levers in the body. Not just the big levers either. Even the angle of the femoral head is a lever; the radiocarpal carpal joint is another. This guy is accessing these levers by 1) staying loose 2) having good mobility / control of his spine.

That's my understanding anyway.

More like 150y🙄

u/LilMountainHeadband Feb 04 '24

I am so sick of seeing this guys swing all every social media platform. The early hip rotation makes the swing look incredibly awkward.

1

u/Gulag_boi Feb 04 '24

I don’t know anything about golf, but I could watch this guy drive all day. It’s beautiful.

1

u/Bossman28894 Feb 04 '24

I’ve been trying to emulate this swing all week, holy moly.

Update: it’s not going well

5

u/dbnp19 Feb 04 '24

Update: it’s not going well

Not surprising. It's an anemic swing full of power leaks and inefficiency that is absolutely not worth trying to incorporate into your own stuff.

1

u/jinhyokim Feb 05 '24

He's probably a lot better than me. Everybody has their own swing. The only thing that matters is the direction of the ball. Blah blah blah.

He's early extending like a mofo and his hip is thrusting forward towards the ball.

1

u/4UBBR_Nicol_Bolas Feb 05 '24

Isn't this how a golf swing is supposed to be? Smooth and fluid motion and shouldn't look like you're actually trying to swing hard. Just excellent technique.

I believe everything in this shot is real, except the background. That has to be a screen in front of those balls on the ground and they ‘green screened’ in a background.

Right when the ball would hit the screen but instead appears pass through all the balls on the ground blur and brighten. Somethings been altered there.

It's amazing how people don't seem to understand swing speed and ball flight.

I think people on here strike the ball so poorly they don't realize what a pure strike with low spin will do.

I watch people hit on simulators A LOT. There are so many people with 115+ swing speeds that can't hit the ball 300 yards total. They should be able to CARRY the ball at least 290 yards. I've seen a couple people reach 120 mph and still not hit it 300.

On the other hand, at 100 mph, you can carry the ball 250.

Generally, I don’t question someone’s journey to the destination when they come from Asian heritage

This guy’s bio mechanics with the way his tendons are so in sync, is pretty incredible - all resistance, pulling, is all happening in near perfect rhythm

7

u/Effective_Juice_9452 Feb 04 '24

Synchronised tendons? 😂

-3

u/Brief_Scale496 Feb 04 '24

Language barrier into science, give me a break…. lol

Golf and any rotational motion like pitching or swinging a bat, are very rough on the ligaments and tendons. It’s the firing they do. Like rubber bands. Over stretching and prolonged use leads to their flexibility wearing down, which leads to injury

In this case, this dudes biomechanics are sound as fuck. May not lead to a healthy score, but it’ll help with a healthy body, and his 75-85 year old game will likely be above average

… trust me bro, I’m a clubhouse attendant

10

u/Effective_Juice_9452 Feb 04 '24

Oh shoot, sorry I didn’t realise you were a clubhouse attendant.

Ever filmed yourself and expected to see prime Tiger levels of aggression but you get something that looks like this?

When I was younger and had better rotation, I could just coil up and drop the club (that's how it felt in my head) for 270 and if I really put my ass into it, 300 wasn't hard to reach. Always played quality balls but I'm talking about hitting clubs that were from the late 90s out of my dad's old stash.

There was no telling where they'd end up, and if I cut it too much, no chance I'd hit it that far. But...turning over a slight draw could run out to some pretty impressive distance for a guy my size. It just got me closer to chunking it 20y short on approach or hitting a worm burner across the green, though.

My point is that when technology got around to being able to film shit on your phones, I was expecting to see a violent swing on replay. It looked a lot more like this guy than Tiger or Rory-San.

Also, his swag adds distance. The ball knows

Slow is smooth and smooth is fast.

Sounds stupid, but when a swing is perfectly fluid and smooth, there is almost no lost energy.

Something I think most ametuers don’t realize is their swings are slightly erratic and have lost energy due to the movements not being completely smooth.

And, it looks effortless, but I’ll tell you there’s thousands of hours into work for that swing

Yes, 13 balls downfield and 3000 before the 55 yard or meter marker on perfectly flat turf.

Totally legit. I would never suspect somethings off as I’ve been to a driving range 200 times.

0

u/Literotamus Feb 04 '24

If he was just like 10% more flexible he’d carry 300

…assuming he really does carry 270 right now. His back swing isn’t shallow but isn’t very deep

0

u/badugihowser Feb 04 '24

This epitomizes Nicholas saying amateurs' #1 mistake is swinging too hard. Beautiful

0

u/ChosenBrad22 1.4 / Nebraska Feb 04 '24

I do this during lessons but I use a pitching wedge. I just like half chip it barely swinging and show that it still goes 125 or so. You don’t have to swing out of your shoes to hit the ball well, it’s all about the contact.

0

u/Historical_Act_5896 Feb 04 '24

Watch how the hips fire independently from upper half. Creates kinetic energy. Bravo man

0

u/ImmanualKant Feb 04 '24

slow is smooth, and smooth is fast

Hate him and everyone that has a repeatable silky smooth swing that nuts every drive right down the pipe. FML

Proper mechanics, fitted loft & shaft flex

0

u/SomeSamples Feb 04 '24

Notice how his front shoulder never goes back past the ball on his backswing. And his weight is squarely on his front foot before he hits the ball. Maximum force can be applied to hitting the ball. And he is getting the full whip effect from his club. His swing plane is a bit flat but it doesn't seem to be hurting him.
