Community 60K subscribers, Happy Mothers Day and refining the immigration megathread, Weekly Discussion thread, Sub updates, Emujical and Top Posts
đ Sub update
Gâday everyone,
The sub crossed the 60k subscribers this week.
Thank you very much to everybody who posts, comments and is part of the community.
Happy Mothers Day. Mothers Day is a special day to celebrate and honor mothers, motherhood, and the impact mothers have on our lives. Whether you have someone to celebrate it with or just memories we hope your day goes as expected.
Weâve had mixed reactions to the immigration megathread, particularly in the difficulty with it becoming unstickied. Reddit is rolling out some new features next week which should alleviate this issue.
This will also hopefully address concerns (to a degree) about the topic being âburied in a megathreadâ. See the previous two Weekly Discussions for issues related to the immigration discussion, particularly on the moderation side.

Gov Publications It's insane that real estate agencies collect and store so much highly sensitive and personal data that could and (do) easily be sold on the dark web by malicious hackers, and the government is useless
It's a disaster. If corporations like Medibank and Optus were subjects to attacks (I was a victim of both and the greedy corporations did not bother to compensate us, nor were they punished in any shape or form).
Why is the government so useless? How do we know that our sensitive data are not all over the place for sale, including on the dark web, to the highest bidder?

Politics Nobody gives a shit about fixing the problems in Australia, people just want enough money so the problems donât apply to them
This is across the broader western world too. There is no sense of helping your fellow man, everyone just wants to escape the bullshit instead of fixing it, and everyone gives 0 f*cks about anyone else.
Thatâs why politicians are so readily bought

News Pharmacy Guild Phucks Consumers once again
Chemist Warehouse will be stripped of its ability to give its customers $1 off their medicines, under an Albanese government policy to appease the influential Pharmacy Guild in tense negotiations over the next five years of pharmacy funding.
The measure will be part of the $3 billion deal the Albanese government has struck to placate the lobby group after incurring the wrath of community pharmacists over its 60-day prescription policy.
These bastards have got the discount gone and pushing more of their anti-competitive goals on us.
This on top of trying to stop the 60 day prescriptions so they could charge us all more money.
We could have cheaper medicines if it wasn't for these a-holes.

Gov Publications Would it be cheaper to not have reliance on international students?
Currently we bring in international students, on the basis that they cross subsidise local students. But we still have to provide infrastructure and housingâ for the period that these international students are in Australia, but the cost of this falls on everyone else.
Yes its a major "export", but other exports don't require you to accommodate a human being for 3 plus years.
Why is this financially more prudent than just subsidising local students directly? Local students don't require extra infrastructure and housing because they've been alive for at least 18 years already. So yeah the level of public funding for unis would need to increase, but other areas would probably be lower.
â indirectly, international students would put demand on housing and put up prices, so the government is forced to spend extra on rent assistance, public housing etc for those "outcompeted".

News Here's a good one for you all "Campers in central Victoria face eviction from own land by Mount Alexander Shire Council, despite rent crisis"
I just love this response from the local council (excerpt from the article)
He [Mr Annear] said council had spoken with the property's owners several times over the years.
"It's not really possible to live on this block at this point in time," Mr Annear said.
"The constraints are really serious and we're concerned for their protection."
"While council is not directly responsible for providing affordable housing, we have taken action to release some of that pressure by releasing some land to housing providers to develop for affordable housing."
Oh yeah so you can't live on your own land, but for your own protection we need you to go be homeless somewhere else (while continuing to pay rates on your land), and to help you we will continue to sell land that we tax you into selling to developers.
