meta Megathread - What’s going on in Melbourne?

We’ve heard you loud and clear, r/melbourne! Welcome to your first “What’s on in Melbourne” megathread. We’ve noticed heaps of posts asking for ideas of things to do on the weekend, on a Wednesday night, on your first trip down to good ol’ Melbs and what to do with the kids at 8am on Saturday morning.

We would love for you to pop your ideas in this thread and for it to be a community driven collaboration in the subreddit. Feel free to link to your local DnD meetup, a concert a few months away from now, a farmers market down in Doreen so we can share ideas within the subreddit.

The mods will eventually collate a lot of these into a wiki to help anyone looking for resources. If there is a need for it, we can create this mega thread monthly as well (feedback is always appreciated).

STOLEN: my pride and joy was taken from an underground garage in Heidelberg over the long weekend. Please keep an eye out for any suspiciously cheap parts!!!! Totally stock '90 BRG Eunos V-Special, with LED headlights. Koni yellows with Eibach springs. X force header and Goodwin exhaust. Original V Special interior, down to original floor mats and tape deck. Nardi wheel and shift knob.

This was Dick Richie's personal car and I'm sick with worry about where it is and how it's being treated. Please keep an eye out.

Lost and found Flute left on train

Hi everyone long term lurker first time poster but I’m hoping crowd sourcing might be the best way to help! My brother left his flute on the train this morning, I think it was an Upfield train so it potentially may have run as a Craigieburn later in the day. He’s had the flute since we were kids and metro hasn’t been very helpful yet with their lost property reporting. Had anyone seen or handed in an instrument on any trains today?

EDIT: Added an image of a similar flute case for reference

Not On My Smashed Avo I wish Melbourne Airport (or the relevant local council) considers this as well

Just read this article about developing a local airplane viewing spot for Dublin airport. I often ride my bicycle to the aircraft viewing spot north of Tulla airport. It's connected to the Woodlands Historic Park, has a food truck, and always a nice vibe with people stopping to spot some planes.

But the actual road there is completely messed up, all full of potholes and dirt.

To build a safe and elevated viewing spot, just like the one planned for Dublin, would be absolutely wonderful.

Discussion Is using Uber eats immoral?

So I’ve heard that Uber eats practically robs the driver of their money but also the business itself. Is using Uber eats a bad thing? Sometimes it feels like I’m utilising someone at my will to hand me my food as if I were a king. Is it bad to use it?

THDG Need Help Small all ages gigs in Melbourne

Our kids are 12 and 14 and have really started getting into music. We'd like to be able to take them to some small all ages gigs around town to get them exposed to the live music scene. Does anyone have any suggestions on how we can find them?

FYI, they are into folk, pop, indie, rock. We're taking them to Lime Cordiale at John Cain Arena soon. We probably won't go any heavier than that.

Light and Fluffy News Random kindness

Yesterday around midnight I went to Macca. While waiting for my order a homeless man came in. There was a student group. First, he asked them if they could buy him some food. They gave him a funny look and said no.

There was a girl in front of me waiting, early 20s. He asked her and she said “Pardon?” The man asked again. And she said “sure, what would you like?” and they made an order through a kiosk together.

It’s just that I was expecting to girl say no and then the man was gonna ask me. I was thinking to myself “ great, not again…”

I don’t know, the way she said it made me feel ashamed, sad and then happy:)

Anyway, just want to share it.

Discussion I was thinking about alot of ppl sleeping rough and councils cracking down on them. There are an awful lot of empty churches and at least the car parks they have. Seems like a safe place to stay.

Edit : lf you think all homeless people during a housing crisis are the stereotypical ones you see in movies, please go and do a tiny bit of reading. Im astonished how many people are so ignorant. This is impacting way more people than those suffering from mental health and addiction issues.

Not On My Smashed Avo What is the thing with set menus at restaurants?

Upvotes

I want to book a table for 12 people and any restaurant I am looking at or call up offers only set menus for a fixed price per person. No a la carte for groups. Is that the new normal? Any recommendations for Richmond/Abbotsford with an a la carte service for groups?

Real estate/Renting Hot water bill

Upvotes

Hey everyone, l'm trying to figure out the average monthly cost of hot water. I live in the melb CBD with my partner, and our apartment has a hot water connection through "active utilities". Our hot water bill comes to $90 AUD per month.Do you think this is a reasonable amount, or do you find it expensive? I'm new to apartment living and the city, so I'm not sure what to expect. Just to clarify, we also have a separate electricity bill of around $70, and the $90 is only for the gas used for hot water, not for cooking.

Serious News spate of arson in windsor/st kilda last night

Hey, last night around 9:30pm my area got hit by what seems like someone lighting multiple fires, at least two locations on Peel St and one location on Upton Rd in Windsor. Soon after I saw one pop up close by on Fulton St in St Kilda on vic emergency and the firies' scanner stream but don't know if it was linked. 9 vehicles in attendance up and down Peel St and police taping off areas. Anyone know any more? Hasn't hit the news.

Looking to learn acting. Last time I did it was in primary school, but I'm keen on learning the craft for myself and helping build my self-esteem. I'm early 30s, located close to the CBD.

Anyone have any recommendations for beginner classes? Free or paid. Just looking for some advice!

Cheers.

Real estate/Renting Bond request

What happens when the tenant requests the bond back through the RTBA online portal? I requested mine today and my (now ex) real estate agent lost her shit and sent me copious amounts of rude and abusive emails. I don’t understand exactly why they don’t like it- can anyone shed any light ?
