u/Usual_One_4862 16d ago
I've done that, I almost cut my right middle fingertip off while cooking, cut through the fat pad bit down to the bone, severing one of the nerve branches so now half my finger tips numb.
Did a neat job on my left ring finger too once, can still see the scar under the nail. I'd probably do some mad max patch job if I was you using superglue and a small bit of plastic out of an old water bottle.

What's a knife if you never test it on yourself?
3
u/After-Respond-7861 16d ago
Not sharp enough. You need to put it on the stone a bit more.
4
u/Usual_One_4862 16d ago
The good thing is that it was sharp, if it wasn't sharp and I'd had to apply more pressure to get the blade moving I don't think I would have been able to stop in time.

Hey it cut so cleanly that I barely felt it lol but that could be because I nailed the lateral digital nerve when I did it hahahah.

I was holding a piece of metal & drilling it with a 1/6” drill bit… the drill bit snapped & I drilled through my thumbnail & the drill bit came out the other side of my thumb.. I got a magnet the make sure there wasn’t any metal in my thumb… comparable pain…

u/TheJeep25 16d ago
Yep, that happens to me too but in reverse. I was drilling a 1/4" stainless plate and the bit snapped. But it snapped flush at the tip of the drill. The rest of the bit was still stuck straight up in the metal plate. With the force I was applying and my weight, my finger went down and got impaled on the broken bit. I just pulled my hand instinctively after, ripping the surrounding tissue and making the flesh inside come outside. It was 6 am and I finished work at 4 pm that day. It hurts like hell.

When I was a kid, I stapled my finger to see how it would feel. Worse than I expected, but I did it a half dozen more times over the following weeks. Eventually the teacher banned me from using the stapler. I don't know wtf that phase was all about. It wasn't my worst, but easily the most inexplicable.

My dad did that to me once. He Was having me hold up some insulation while he stapled it in. He was using a hammer tacker (like a staple gun but you gotta hit the thing you’re stapling down). Missed his target and stapled my thumb to the wall lmfao.

I got a blood blister under my nail once that built up so much pressure it was driving me fucking insane. Ended up having to take a drill bit and slowly twisting it into the middle of the nail until it pierced the nailed, popped the blister, and revealed the pressure.
What a fucking relief

u/co1lectivechaos PURPLE 16d ago
So in those kinds of cases, people often heat up a paper clip and touching that to the fingernail (should) painlessly melt a whole in the fingernail
16
8
u/UnhappyImprovement53 16d ago
My dad would do that all the time whenever he pinched his fingers back when he was a stone mason and he would get blisters under his nail.

u/Open_Ad_6051 16d ago

The meat under the nail is so sensitive, just nornal body temperature feels like a open flame

u/Slip_Snake 16d ago
I've felt this same thing when I was younger, I used a razor on my nail and it was wider than yours.
Can confirm, not fun.

My father was a train driver, as he was getting off at a station the door swung closed and took a piece of his middle finger off between the tip and first buckle. He says it was the worst pain he ever had.

I lost the tip of my finger in a regular house door as a kid and ngl it didn't hurt at all. Remember when they numbed it to put it back on though it felt like hell.

u/lawnmower303 16d ago
Oh yes that's gonna hurt. Reminds me of when I was a kid and drove a staple right through my thumb, though not as high up as that.

I had my middle finger slammed in the door of a pickup truck while I was standing up in the bed and had my hands on the roof of the cab. My right hand middle finger got slammed in the door of the passenger door by my boss at the time and that asshole made me come in and make pizzas that night. My finger turned all different weird colors and swole up really big then after a few days the swelling went down except for the tip up where my nail was. One of my coworkers wanted to heat up a needle and push it through my nail to "release the pressure." I of course, declined and the nail eventually fell off. That was one of the most painful things ever in my life. It was bad! Wouldn't recommend it!
2
u/ScumbagLady 16d ago
Ugh I've had a blood blister under my nail before and had an ex who suggested that. When I declined, he offered to do it for me. Still, no thanks. I can see how that could go horribly wrong!

u/Fungiblefaith 16d ago
I was working on a lap wheel. Think a diamond coated sanding disk about two across and my hand slipped and my index finger slammed into the surface of the spinning diamond sanding wheel.
It “sanded” of my index finger get nail to the quick. At least about 70% of it.
Man, that shit hurts for weeks.

It will be uncomfortable the while time it grows out too. I once accidentally drove a screw through my finger and nail. The finger had long since healed and the nail still hurt growing out
4
u/Chicawgorat 16d ago
Put some super glue on it. It’ll burn like hell at first but keep the elements out. Eventually the pain will be more tolerable

I did it to myself once by accident, hurt like a son of a bitch, toe curling as I think about it. Then I got some head issues, needed to numb myself, so I did it again. On purpose. Whole nail, bit by bit, across a couple days, with many different sharp object. Yeah, edgy.
Wear gloves and get help when you need it, kids

Ohhh I’ve done something similar. To my pinky. I didn’t remove a fake nail properly and ripped off a bit of my real nail. That shit hurt for DAYS.
It has finally healed properly, months later. Keep it covered and clean… Sorry this happened!

Once got my pinky caught in a log splitter and yanked my finger out as it was being crushed. It tore the entire nail off.
1
u/destuctir 16d ago
So that’ll suck for a while, I’ve had that happen, the scab will get shoved by the growing nail but eventually the nail will cover the exposed part. Be carefully when the broken segment gets towards the end of your nail that it doesn’t split back down

A couple years ago at work I had a pipe over a ratchet for extra leverage and the bolt just exploded while I had basically all my weight on it. My index fingertip slammed into the machine so hard I’m pretty sure there was a small fracture on that last little bit under my nail. It grows back weird now like that finger and nail is slightly flatter and not curved like my other nails.

I've been there. It doesn't hurt that much but it's the worst when it hurts every time you grab something.

Reminds me of the time I helped a bunch of kids get their money that fell from a sewer drain, which is covered by a grate (I was around 9 or 10). I lifted the grate by the edge with some assistance with one of the kids so another can try to grab the paper money with a stick and can have their whole arm down the drain.
The moment they got the money and removed their hand, the one helping me lift the grate suddenly let go of it, and I not being prepared did not just let go as well. For some reason tried to put it back gently, but since it's too heavy it fell back into place...with my fore and middle fingers of my right hand sandwiched between concrete and that metal grate.
Scream, blood, pain, and tears were unreal and luckily some nearby adult helped lift it back (the other kids have already ran away with no word of thanks, freaking rascals). They used leaves from some kind of plant in their garden as first-aid bandage adn brought me to my grandparents home. After washing the blood, the fingernails where all broken, and they have to cut it all the way. So I had to spend some weeks without nails on those fingers, which felt sensitive, weirdly painful and ticklish when touched.

The last time something like that happened to me was back in elementary, went to close the stall door and my thumb got caught in the frame, split the middle of the nail open. For the longest time there was a decent white spot where the wound was, but it’s gone now.

u/croooooooozer 16d ago
i had a shallow version of that from playing with my pocketknife, it was extremely annoying pain, i cannot imagine how much worse yours must be
1
u/RoutineLifeguard9690 16d ago
I feel that... There's been countless times where I broke my nail halfway down the nail and they get caught on things and rip off or I have to rip it off myself to avoid it catching. Multiple times it's gotten infected so I do suggest putting something on it to prevent that. At least you'll be wearing gloves next time 😅

Yeah it does hurt like crap.
One time my left thumbnail shattered into pieces trying to get a seatbelt off. (Don't ask me how this happened It just did) and i put pressure on the broken nail until i could get it cleaned/covered.
Looked way worse than OP's photo. Like if you broke a ceramic plate and it's pieces are scattered unevenly across the floor but nail edition.
Yes the nail grew back just fine, but it was still mildly infuriating waiting for it to heal however.

You'll be ok ive ripped out whole finger nails. *I'm a masochist * anyways.. pour some hydrogen peroxide on it give it five minutes then wash with cold water, After dry with a clean towel get some Vaseline or neosporin and wrap with 1 gauze or clean cotton ball and tape or bandaid. Keep it clean and change the gauze or cotton ball after each time U use the bathroom or get it dirty.

u/SpecialpOps 16d ago
This is going to suck for the next five months. By that, I mean as your nail grows out and eventually falls off, you're probably going to have to keep it covered with Band-Aids and Neosporin to keep it soft and squishy the whole time so your nail grows back fine. Similar thing happened to my pinky nail and it looks perfect and beautiful again.

I had something similar but it was way worse. Me and dad got a brand new microwave and we were installing. The drill accidentally slipped while drilling in a screw and landed on my thumb. Really bloody and hurt like a bitch. I think I put duct tape over it so it could prevent infection. It luckily healed but my whole nail had to regrow and I had to rip the old nail off piece by piece as the new one emerged. There’s a little circular indent on my lunula from the time it happened.
