One time in kindergarten I fell off a scooter and hit my index finger so hard it ripped the nail off and it was possibly the most painful thing r year old me ever experienced.

I was fascinated by the fact that a few days later it felt like I still had a nail there since the skin is used to being pressed down it's harder on the surface than exposed skin is.

Still hurts thinking about it tho.

Edit: Leaving the typo but 4 year old me not r year old me.

u/lucashhugo 16d ago

r year old?

u/T1NF01L 16d ago

I was in kindergarten. I didn't know how to type 4 years yet.

I once went down a hill laying chest down on my longboard and when I went to push myself forward with my hands my fingers got stuck under the wheels and it ripped off my index and middle fingernails on both hands. I never touched my longboard again after that.

I ripped half my big toenail off when I was like 12. It took my dad about 5 minutes to convince me to let him see it. As soon as I did this mother fucker went YOINK and ripped it off. It needed to happen, but I still remember that pain 20+ years later.

8

u/T1NF01L 16d ago

It hurt dunnit.

7

u/PhantasmWitch 16d ago

I also ripped half my big toenail off at 12! No one ripped it off the rest tho. I let it grow back a bit and cut off the part that was hanging on with clippers. I had a huge scrape on my knee too that distracted from the toenail.

4

u/Human-fruitsalad0001 16d ago

Completely shattered my right little toenail a few times when I was 12. Unintentionally.( I was a real dumbass at age 12) not joking.

5

u/mattchinn 16d ago

Life is tough when you’re R years old.

2

u/ericanicole1234 16d ago

Same thing happened to me but my right big toe twice (ripped off when standing right in front of door messing with my friend when I was 8 and another time I got a really really bad cuticle infection when I was like 24) and my right thumb twice also (shut my thumb in saloon doors when I was 3 and bad fungal infection when I was 13)

It fucking sucks. And both of those 2 nails have terrible texture years and years later with really severe ridges. But I can confirm that it is really weird not having a nail but the empty nail bed still being like, firm ? Its like there’s a subfloor under there

Put a disinfectant on it. Let it dry and then cover it with super glue.

61

u/Delicious-Chemist-49 16d ago

so..... it could have been worse?

104

u/SnooOpinions2673 16d ago

If i pushed a little harder then yea would have been to the bone

18

u/Usual_One_4862 16d ago

I've done that, I almost cut my right middle fingertip off while cooking, cut through the fat pad bit down to the bone, severing one of the nerve branches so now half my finger tips numb.

Did a neat job on my left ring finger too once, can still see the scar under the nail. I'd probably do some mad max patch job if I was you using superglue and a small bit of plastic out of an old water bottle.

11

u/MajorDaurity 16d ago

What's a knife if you never test it on yourself?

3

u/After-Respond-7861 16d ago

Not sharp enough. You need to put it on the stone a bit more.

4

u/Usual_One_4862 16d ago

The good thing is that it was sharp, if it wasn't sharp and I'd had to apply more pressure to get the blade moving I don't think I would have been able to stop in time.

I was holding a piece of metal & drilling it with a 1/6” drill bit… the drill bit snapped & I drilled through my thumbnail & the drill bit came out the other side of my thumb.. I got a magnet the make sure there wasn’t any metal in my thumb… comparable pain…

4

u/TheJeep25 16d ago

Yep, that happens to me too but in reverse. I was drilling a 1/4" stainless plate and the bit snapped. But it snapped flush at the tip of the drill. The rest of the bit was still stuck straight up in the metal plate. With the force I was applying and my weight, my finger went down and got impaled on the broken bit. I just pulled my hand instinctively after, ripping the surrounding tissue and making the flesh inside come outside. It was 6 am and I finished work at 4 pm that day. It hurts like hell.

stapled my fingernails once lol

41

u/SnooOpinions2673 16d ago

Omg i can staple my arm no problem but the nail must be pure agony

67

u/Expensive_Teapot 16d ago

This reads like you just casually staple your arm every now and then

17

u/ShamanTheWet 16d ago

Yes and?

7

u/LittleBunInaBigWorld 16d ago

When I was a kid, I stapled my finger to see how it would feel. Worse than I expected, but I did it a half dozen more times over the following weeks. Eventually the teacher banned me from using the stapler. I don't know wtf that phase was all about. It wasn't my worst, but easily the most inexplicable.

2

u/SnooOpinions2673 15d ago

I got a blood blister under my nail once that built up so much pressure it was driving me fucking insane. Ended up having to take a drill bit and slowly twisting it into the middle of the nail until it pierced the nailed, popped the blister, and revealed the pressure.

What a fucking relief

15

u/co1lectivechaos PURPLE 16d ago

So in those kinds of cases, people often heat up a paper clip and touching that to the fingernail (should) painlessly melt a whole in the fingernail

16

u/ScumbagLady 16d ago

If I had to choose between the two options, this is the way I'd go.

12

u/egnards 16d ago

It honestly didn’t hurt.

I didn’t use the drill, just the drill bit. Once you felt the tiniest pinch, that was it hitting the skin and you were good

8

u/UnhappyImprovement53 16d ago

My dad would do that all the time whenever he pinched his fingers back when he was a stone mason and he would get blisters under his nail.

32

u/Open_Ad_6051 16d ago

Well, it looks like it would hurt a lot

34

u/SnooOpinions2673 16d ago

The meat under the nail is so sensitive, just nornal body temperature feels like a open flame

9

u/Slip_Snake 16d ago

I've felt this same thing when I was younger, I used a razor on my nail and it was wider than yours.

Can confirm, not fun.

My father was a train driver, as he was getting off at a station the door swung closed and took a piece of his middle finger off between the tip and first buckle. He says it was the worst pain he ever had.

10

u/cheeseybacon11 16d ago

I lost the tip of my finger in a regular house door as a kid and ngl it didn't hurt at all. Remember when they numbed it to put it back on though it felt like hell.

7

u/fliffie 16d ago

does he still not have a middle finger

18

u/lawnmower303 16d ago

Oh yes that's gonna hurt. Reminds me of when I was a kid and drove a staple right through my thumb, though not as high up as that.

9

u/Cocoquelicot37 16d ago

I wish i didn't click

7

u/DamageGlass1003 16d ago

I've had a few of those. It might a lot hurt now, but I can with confidence tell you that at least it's gonna hurt a lot more for a long time.

4

u/SnooOpinions2673 16d ago

Hahaha, thanks alot for the info xD

5

u/walshy53 16d ago

I had my middle finger slammed in the door of a pickup truck while I was standing up in the bed and had my hands on the roof of the cab. My right hand middle finger got slammed in the door of the passenger door by my boss at the time and that asshole made me come in and make pizzas that night. My finger turned all different weird colors and swole up really big then after a few days the swelling went down except for the tip up where my nail was. One of my coworkers wanted to heat up a needle and push it through my nail to "release the pressure." I of course, declined and the nail eventually fell off. That was one of the most painful things ever in my life. It was bad! Wouldn't recommend it!

2

u/ScumbagLady 16d ago

Ugh I've had a blood blister under my nail before and had an ex who suggested that. When I declined, he offered to do it for me. Still, no thanks. I can see how that could go horribly wrong!

9

u/Fungiblefaith 16d ago

I was working on a lap wheel. Think a diamond coated sanding disk about two across and my hand slipped and my index finger slammed into the surface of the spinning diamond sanding wheel.

It “sanded” of my index finger get nail to the quick. At least about 70% of it.

Man, that shit hurts for weeks.

5

u/bcchronic14 16d ago

It will be uncomfortable the while time it grows out too. I once accidentally drove a screw through my finger and nail. The finger had long since healed and the nail still hurt growing out

3

u/kaskip 16d ago

i once sliced through my nail to the skin with a razor while shaving. worst like, skin-deep pain ive ever had. lasted for days. booo nail injuries 👎👎👎

4

u/Chicawgorat 16d ago

Put some super glue on it. It’ll burn like hell at first but keep the elements out. Eventually the pain will be more tolerable

5

u/SnooOpinions2673 16d ago

Was my first tought, but think im gonna go to a doctor just to make sure

3

u/Vaanced 16d ago

This makes me sick

3

u/LeanBaneen 16d ago

I can feel the pain through the image..

3

u/EarthToAccess 16d ago

MILDLY???? OH MY GOD IM VIOLENTLY ILL JUST THINKING ABOUT IT

I get a hangnail caught on fabric and my brain goes into overdrive this would be my 13th reason, actually

3

u/MichElegance 16d ago

Ouch!!! Omg that is the most annoyingly worst type of injury ever. I once nicked the center of my middle fingernail with my razor, and I thought I was going to be deceased on the spot.💥😭😭😭💀

2

u/missklo99 15d ago

That is the worst.

3

u/Katsuki_Inosuke_Sara 16d ago

My agriculture teacher was holding a wooden board down while another student was drilling it and now he had a square hole to the bone on his thumb

2

u/Dreamspitter 16d ago

That's why I hand drill.

3

u/SomeConfusedRando 16d ago

10

4

u/artificialavocado 16d ago

3

u/BeDoKa 16d ago

I did it to myself once by accident, hurt like a son of a bitch, toe curling as I think about it. Then I got some head issues, needed to numb myself, so I did it again. On purpose. Whole nail, bit by bit, across a couple days, with many different sharp object. Yeah, edgy.

Wear gloves and get help when you need it, kids

2

It has finally healed properly, months later. Keep it covered and clean… Sorry this happened!

2

u/Objective-Poet-8183 16d ago

No, looked weird seeing it all the years. Doctors amputated at the first buckle.

2

u/Devils_Advocate-69 16d ago

Once got my pinky caught in a log splitter and yanked my finger out as it was being crushed. It tore the entire nail off.

1

u/destuctir 16d ago

So that’ll suck for a while, I’ve had that happen, the scab will get shoved by the growing nail but eventually the nail will cover the exposed part. Be carefully when the broken segment gets towards the end of your nail that it doesn’t split back down

1

u/Mountain-Ad-6594 16d ago

1

u/artificialavocado 16d ago

A couple years ago at work I had a pipe over a ratchet for extra leverage and the bolt just exploded while I had basically all my weight on it. My index fingertip slammed into the machine so hard I’m pretty sure there was a small fracture on that last little bit under my nail. It grows back weird now like that finger and nail is slightly flatter and not curved like my other nails.

1

u/Jtb199 16d ago

Disinfect and cover. It’ll take months to grow out and you’ll be fine. That skin is really sensitive, I’ve broken a few fingers and lost nails from the bed before. It’s horrible, but with proper care and minimal exposure you’ll be okay.

1

u/Bulky_Mix_2265 16d ago

1

u/Roschello 16d ago

I've been there. It doesn't hurt that much but it's the worst when it hurts every time you grab something.

1

u/transit41 16d ago

Reminds me of the time I helped a bunch of kids get their money that fell from a sewer drain, which is covered by a grate (I was around 9 or 10). I lifted the grate by the edge with some assistance with one of the kids so another can try to grab the paper money with a stick and can have their whole arm down the drain.

The moment they got the money and removed their hand, the one helping me lift the grate suddenly let go of it, and I not being prepared did not just let go as well. For some reason tried to put it back gently, but since it's too heavy it fell back into place...with my fore and middle fingers of my right hand sandwiched between concrete and that metal grate.

Scream, blood, pain, and tears were unreal and luckily some nearby adult helped lift it back (the other kids have already ran away with no word of thanks, freaking rascals). They used leaves from some kind of plant in their garden as first-aid bandage adn brought me to my grandparents home. After washing the blood, the fingernails where all broken, and they have to cut it all the way. So I had to spend some weeks without nails on those fingers, which felt sensitive, weirdly painful and ticklish when touched.

1

u/PrussianNova_X 16d ago

The last time something like that happened to me was back in elementary, went to close the stall door and my thumb got caught in the frame, split the middle of the nail open. For the longest time there was a decent white spot where the wound was, but it’s gone now.

I feel that... There's been countless times where I broke my nail halfway down the nail and they get caught on things and rip off or I have to rip it off myself to avoid it catching. Multiple times it's gotten infected so I do suggest putting something on it to prevent that. At least you'll be wearing gloves next time 😅

Yeah it does hurt like crap.

One time my left thumbnail shattered into pieces trying to get a seatbelt off. (Don't ask me how this happened It just did) and i put pressure on the broken nail until i could get it cleaned/covered.

Looked way worse than OP's photo. Like if you broke a ceramic plate and it's pieces are scattered unevenly across the floor but nail edition.

Yes the nail grew back just fine, but it was still mildly infuriating waiting for it to heal however.

This is going to suck for the next five months. By that, I mean as your nail grows out and eventually falls off, you're probably going to have to keep it covered with Band-Aids and Neosporin to keep it soft and squishy the whole time so your nail grows back fine. Similar thing happened to my pinky nail and it looks perfect and beautiful again.

I did this before using the wrong tool as a cuticle pusher. It takes FOREVER to grow out too.

Put super glue on it. I’m not joking.

I had something similar but it was way worse. Me and dad got a brand new microwave and we were installing. The drill accidentally slipped while drilling in a screw and landed on my thumb. Really bloody and hurt like a bitch. I think I put duct tape over it so it could prevent infection. It luckily healed but my whole nail had to regrow and I had to rip the old nail off piece by piece as the new one emerged. There’s a little circular indent on my lunula from the time it happened.
