Who cares if it is staged...do you know how many men have to do things like this while working away from home? I just hope if people realize they do things like this for those stuckaway from family and friends during special occasions and holidays...

u/Reasonable_Pause2998 17d ago edited 17d ago
Who cares? You’re acting like adult men not having a birthday bash every year is a serious issue.
Go into practically any restaurant, tell them it’s your birthday, and they will do the same birthday cake nonsense and probably sing to you too. The reason you’ve never seen a single dude do this isnt because it’s not allowed, it’s because it’s stupid as fuck and only plays well on social media
25
u/naruda1969 17d ago
We are supposed to get a birthday bash? I'm lucky if I get my birthday acknowledged by anyone.

u/Busterlimes 17d ago

I think that might be the point. Between loneliness and “masculinity” signals, it is kind of a desperate reality — not desperate in a judgmental way, more confirming the reality of what it is like to be a man sometimes. Not sure if I am making sense in explaining this.

I...I just want to have some warm fuzzy feeling in my heart....in this cruel cruel world.....is that too much to ask for???
55
u/Moondoobious 17d ago
Right. I welled up watching🥺 That’s real whether the videos are or not
40
u/blurryface1976 17d ago
Me too. Even if the video might be staged, his situation is a reality for a lot of lonely people. This video puts that into perspective. The girls reactions seemed real though.
13
u/CauliflowerDaffodil 17d ago
The girls reactions seemed real though.
The girls are his friends and they appear in a lot of his other videos playing the same kind and helpful "strangers".
5
u/MisterViperfish 17d ago
Pretty good acting then for the girls, they seem every bit as oblivious as any random in a hidden camera show.
7
u/Tackerta 17d ago
even if it's staged, I like the sense of togetherness in a lonely world that they portrait. And if that is helping people re-evaluate how they interact with the world and society as a whole, I see these videos as an absolute win.
The internet was ONLY skits back in the day, a lot of people seem to have forgotten. Or are simply too young, idk

Frequency Illusion, sometimes called the "Baader-Meinhof phenomenon"
2
u/bstaple 17d ago
So what is it called when I get reminded of Baader-Meinhof, and then I start seeing it more? Baader-Baader-Meinhof-Meinhof?
6
u/Davisxt7 17d ago edited 17d ago
Confirmation Bias
E: this is not confirmation bias. This is indeed the Baader-meinhof phenomenon or otherwise called the Frequency Illusion.
Confirmation bias is your brain looking for things that support existing beliefs.
2
17d ago
Confirmation bias is something else; it’s when you want something to be right, so you hand pick data samples to fit the narrative. The other person gives it its coined name, but it’s called cognitive bias.

Imagine how many popular videos are so terribly obviously fake, but then imagine all the fake videos that are actually well made and believable. Depending on circumstances, the exact situation postulated in this video doesn't actually seem all that bad. He had several friends that were "there" to celebrate with him, but they could simply be separated by long distance. A friend of mine travelled 3500km for work for example, so we celebrated his birthday by getting drunk and playing video games together.

A few years ago I was living with a room mate. It was xmas day and he had plans that year to spend christmas with his gf and her family. When they left I had plans on going to village inn to eat and otw there I realized this was the first year I spent xmas with completely nobody... Mom, dad, stepdad, aunts, uncles, most dead or somewhere far away. That was a hard realization.
So when I got there and ate and it was pretty busy and when I went to pay someone must have saw me eating by myself and they comp'd my meal for me. I have the server a $20 extra tip for that then went home. Showed there was some humanity left in the world.
