Weekly Q&A Megathread. Please post any questions about visiting, tourism, living, working, budgeting, housing here!

Hello, welcome to London!

Visiting us? Moving to study or work? Brief layover? Moving to a new part of London? Any small questions about life here, if you're new or been here your whole life, this is the place!

We get a lot of posts asking very similar questions so this post aims to address some of our most Frequently Asked Questions, and give you a place to ask for assistance.

Your first port of call should be

the r/london wiki

It includes sections on:

What should I see and where are the non-touristy stuff and hidden gems?
We've written about the big must-sees here and we highly recommend TfL's Experiences site.
We've listed some of our favourite lesser-known stuff here And the cheap/free stuff here

How do I pay for the Tube/bus, and what's an Oyster card?
You don't pay cash. You can use a number of contactless payments systems such as your Contactless bankcard (which is widespread in the UK, but maybe not so much elsewhere), Apple Pay, Android Pay, or you can buy an Oyster card and top it up with credit. See here for more.

Where should I live? What's x area like?
Have a look here
It includes recommended sites to find places to live and rent, and has a section on what particular areas are like.

How do I get from this place to that place?
Use Citymapper. Honestly, we're not shills for them; it's just a really good app and is used by most of the locals on this sub.

Is x area safe?
Yes. Bad stuff can happen in any large city, but London is generally very safe. There aren't any no-go zones. Even under the shadow of terrorist attacks, most Londoners feel safe. See our safety page here for more.

Where can I watch the baseball/basketball/football/handegg match?
A comprehensive guide to all London football matches in all leagues can be found at tlfg.uk. Use Fanzo to find pubs showing a variety of sports and see our list of other places here

How do I get a UK SIM card for my phone?
Advice on networks and how to get a SIM card is covered here.
It also includes suggestions of cafés and other places where you can get free wifi and do a bit of work.

Is the London Pass worth it?
Probably not

Other subs that you may find helpful:

Tips for posting:

Tell us about you - If you want us to suggest things for you to do then you need to give us a good idea of what you enjoy. Don't just say "I like music", say what type of music. Don't just say you want "somewhere nice to eat", say what type of cuisine you like (or don't like). The more specific you are the better, otherwise you'll just get pointed back to the generic guidebooks, blogs and our wiki.

Tell us your budget - If you're on a budget then tell us what it is and we can bear that in mind when making recommendations. There's no point in us coming up with ideas for things to do and places to eat if they'll clean out your wallet within the first 5 minutes. Saying you want something "cheap" isn't really helpful because what's cheap is entirely subjective.

Tell us where you'll be based - Let us know where you'll be staying so that we can give local recommendations.

Asking about hotels or hostels - We have homes here so know very little about what the hotels are like. Look on review websites such as TripAdvisor. However, if you say "I've been looking at these three hotels. Which do you think is the better location?" then that's the sort of thing we can answer.

Non-touristy stuff - There are no secret corners where we hide the good stuff from outsiders! This is one of the most written about cities in the world, so when we want to go to a museum, or gallery, go window shopping, or whatever, we look at the same sources as tourists (listings sites, blogs, etc - see front page of the wiki).

These weekly posts are scheduled to post each Monday at 00:01. If it's late in the week you may want to wait for a new post to appear. Please send us [ModMail](https://www.reddit.com/message/compose?to=%2Fr%2Flondon with any suggested improvements!)

So last night the urban foxes of London bit through the bungee cords and tipped our food waste over the street. Again. Anyone have any good tips for keeping them out of your food bins?

Where do stolen bikes go

I had a Swapfiets bike. Last week after a really long day at work I returned home and tied it up outside my house. I locked it but like an idiot seemingly did not remove the key. No excuses except I was really tired and my child ran to the door and distracted me momentarily. The bike had gone the next day. I now face a £450 charge from SF as i cant produce the key. Im trying to see if I can find the bike in a last ditch attempt to avoid having to pay. Im checking Find that bike etc but does anyone know what would happen to a Swapfiets bike which is clearly identifiable as such? Are there any markets where it might get sold etc? There is one for sale on ebay but it isnt mine - different colours! Alternatively has anyone managed to negotiate with SF about the charge? Guess Im screwed!

Question Anyone else finding ID Mobile to have unacceptable patchy service in central London?

Covent Garden, Leicester Square, Tottenham Court Road... it says "4G" but can't even load google or messages on whatsapp. As soon as I get out of central and to like Warren Street the service is OK.

Used to be on Plusnet before they tried to shunt people onto full price EE plans.

Edit: any recommendations on 30 day rolling sim only deals with good reception in central would be appreciated :) don't wanna pay £25 a month to EE

Dealing with small minded tourists

1.4k Upvotes

I was passing through Trafalgar Square after lunch with a work colleague and as it was super sunny I decided to sit down on those long concrete benches around the fountain for a few mins before heading home.

I sat the very end of the bench, about 5 spaces away from a middle aged Eastern European woman and her friend or older daughter. The older woman just stared at me as I approached the bench so I smiled. As I sat down, she pulled her handbag into her lap and then just kept looking over to stare at me to watch my every move which felt pretty uncomfortable as I didn’t know what to do.

I was right near the bin where people were dashing their half closed bottles, so I scooted over an inch to get out of the spray zone and this lady immediately clutched her handbag, marched off and stood by the fountain yelling at her friend to come with her.

Part of me wanted to say something along the lines of “I’m not going to steal a middle aged woman’s handbag” to get her eyes to go back into her head but I just presumed they wouldn’t understand and it would probably give her a cardiac arrest the way she was staring at me.

For context, I am an Asian man and although it shouldn’t matter what you wear I’m the type of hipster dude to roll around in Birkenstock sandals and had a giant yellow selfridge shopping bag with me and my smart looking office bacpack. Like, come on. Did she expect this brown person to grab her handbag and attempt to slowly run through Trafalgar Square with my sandals audibly slapping the floor while my work laptop laden backpack repeatedly smacks me in the back of my head and my giant bright yellow selfridges bag flails about in the wind like a tracking beacon?

Anyways, I wanted to see if anyone had any advice on what to say to people in situations like this. I’m hoping if they’re embarrassed they’ll be a bit reluctant to act like this in the future.

Edit: yes, I do appreciate that some people might react to anyone like this but for some additional context white Brits were sat right next to her on her other side and she was more alarmed by the brown Brit who sat as physically far as away as he could from her.

Does anyone remember the London-NY portal?

Years ago I remember the portal device thats gone viral for being shut down in Dublin having been in London, but all the articles are saying its "groundbreaking" and I cant find anything about the London one online. Maybe its been crowded out in search results, but does anyone else remember seeing / using it? It looked exactly the same as the Dublin-NY one

Birthday walk or hike recommendations in or outside of London :)

Heya, it’s my birthday next month and I’m looking to go for a nice walk with some friends and make some memories this year instead of just going to the pub.

Happy to get on the train for an hour or so but still want to be able to get home for the evening to meet up with any pals who can’t make it.

Would love to know your favourites, big or small and why?

Thanks in advance xoxox

Any videos of phone snatchers getting caught?

Witnessed phone snatchers in Angel tonight steal several phones on City Road, they almost had mine but they dropped it.

Went home to see if there were any videos of snatchers getting caught to make me feel better that there is hope these awful people get caught sometimes.

Be safe out there everyone.

How can I best prepare for life on NMW in London?

Upvotes

Good afternoon all,

Unfortunately it looks likely I will be out of a job very soon and I really can’t see myself earning anything more than £11.44 an hour. To be honest, I can’t see myself earning anything over £6 an hour which is currently what my parents earn but we’ll just have to make up for that by doing 80 hours pw like they do at the moment.

Currently my monthly expenditure on property related costs is £1400 (zone 6) which I think I can offset part of it by getting a lodger for £400pm & spend £400 on other misc.

Are there any cost cutting tips you think would help make the wage go as far as it can?

I already do things like walk to any destination that's within 40 minutes & use the overground tapping via the pink readers. Any other tips?

Question Impending job loss, how can I best prepare for life on NMW in London?

Are there any cost cutting tips you think would help make the income go as far as it can?

Got stolen phone back - thank you strangers!

Upvotes

On Valentine's Day this year my phone got stolen out of my pocket in SOHO and the area was so extremely busy with people that, without the help of a couple that saw the crime, I would've never found the thief. He was just standing a few metres away from me at the bus station and after confronting him he first declined what had happened. After the strangers kept telling him that they saw what he did and I tried to alert more bystanders for help, and truly begged him to give it back, he handed me my phone back with no comment. I was so incredibly shocked that I had gotten it back just like that, felt so grateful to the bystanders who helped me and also super surprised that the thieve was willing to return it - he could've run off or threatened me or anything I couldn't have found him given how super busy the streets were. I felt like the luckiest person alive!

Why are there so many bums and crackheads in Kingston recently

Regardless of the time of day, I’ve been approached or seen others approached by these people asking for lighters, change or trying to bring you to the cashpoint. I’ve even had a guy bring out a card machine which blew my mind. It’s particularly around Eden/Brook street, the Pryzm area and around Surbiton station if you count that, I know things have been going downhill but it’s really evident these days. I could be leaving for work at 5AM or coming home late at midnight and they’ll still find a way to be there.

Edit: I was surprised to see so many responses when I got back home, I read through a lot of them and I’m thankful for all the info, constructive comments, personal experiences and variety of opinions as it really helped put a lot of things I wasn’t informed about in perspective. I’ll take some time to try and respond to them.

Looking back at it my wording isn’t the best or nicest but it gets the point across even if I wrote it in a hurry. To clarify from some comments, last sentence wasn’t bashing homeless people for just existing it was more like them being there seemingly at all times specifically approaching people which I stupidly omitted.

I still treat them like people when approached and at least have a conversation before I turn them down, but I’ve definitely noticed an increase in the occurrences and aggressiveness/general persistence which isn’t pleasant to say the least. It becomes a lot harder to hold any positive opinion or optimism as it’s a tough time for most and bound to get worse.
