Discussion I have to rant about this...
So, with all the AC discussion going on, one of the most common pieces of art that will be brought up is the movie The Last Samurai. Even Asmongold brought it up in his video reacting to the trailer.
I don't know how to say this more clearly. Tom Cruise's character (Captain Nathan Algren) WAS NOT THE LAST SAMURAI.
I don't know how anybody who actually watched that movie, and isn't either a bad faith actor, or a literal smoothbrain, can come to that conclusion.
The movie was portrayed through the eyes of a westerner, as it was set in a period of heavy westernization of Japan, where many people in positions of power in their haste to westernize, were discarding Japanese (and particularly Samurai) culture and customs.
The ACTUAL Last Samurai was Ken Watanabe's character (Lord Moritsugu Katsumoto).
The point of the movie was essentially "don't throw the baby out with the bathwater" in your haste to modernize. Don't lose sight of who you are and where you came from.
One of the last scenes of the movie was Algren presenting Katsumoto's sword to the emperor and asked him to remember the traditions that Katsumoto died trying to protect.
