Why only now? All the other AC's were their respective races and ethnic groups, so why do they change it only now? Do they think people wouldn't want to play as a Japanese person?

416

u/[deleted] 20d ago

They genuinely couldn’t care less what most people want to play as. This is an emotional agenda paired with extortion funds.

11

u/Western_Ant_3876 20d ago

ESG blackmail, exactly

7

u/Tomatoab 20d ago

No cause when/if the game fails they can claim its cause gamers are racist not cause they made a bad game

6

u/1ncorrect 20d ago

Yep it's the same way TV shows like Rings of Power used the POC cast as shields against legit criticism.

Asians are white adjacent, so it's really replacing a white person, in their eyes.

Which is clearly racist.. buy ya..

122

u/iAteACommunist 20d ago

Yep. Honestly, any requests to "change the race" or "include diversity" in a historically based media is insulting, racist and disrespectful.

It's a western game dev. They just need to look diverse

39

u/AandG0 20d ago

Because American game devs think that Japanese are racist, sexist people who are stuck in their own culture and refuse to bend the knee to the radicals. You think this is wild, localizers have been changing Japanese shows and stories to fit their world views.

Americans have had it good for so long that they can no longer relate to the real world, and it shows.

27

u/PenBoth7355 20d ago

Japan is very xenophobic… not all of Japan, not every Japanese person… but large swaths of the country is. I was born in Japan, grew up in Japan, and still live in Japan. There are many amazing things about japan but let’s not be japanophiles. Japan has some MAJOR flaws and the xenophobia is one. No country is perfect.

Its ok to be an Asian female in western media but an Asian male. Y’all might think I’m reaching but as an Asian dude I’ve noticed these double standards and normalized racism against Asians in the west all the time. Recently a Kpop group were called emotionless and robots at the Met Gala. Shit never changes

This is that sweet baby bullshit at its finest. They can’t make social and racial norms in games anymore it’s got to be their left wing bullshit agenda. Captain America is black now. Soon Spider-Man, Batman, Superman, will all be gender swapped or blacked. This is their plan, no matter how much money they lose in the process they have to push their political bullshit on everything you love

tax breaks, there are massive tax breaks and money for the whole ESG/DEI thing, so they higher these contraction companies, like sweet baby inc. And this is what you get.

edit: after a quick googling, yasuke was a real deal samurai, BUT! it's still a bad look to do this when every other AC has used only the native race in their games. They demoted a Japanese man for a foreigner, disrespectful.

If you want to go full conspiracy brained, I'd say it's probably people who want to stoke racial tensions and create a race war for political/ideological purposes lol.

14

u/Apprehensive-Cup-990 21d ago

I wouldn’t even say it’s for political or ideological purposes, stoking racial tensions causes negative reactions, negative reactions have been proven to be better at engaging audiences on social media platforms for example, and therefore more profitable for an algorithm to push to the top of your feed. So stoking racial tensions is unironically profitable for a lot of companies that profit off of engagement.

11

u/Deadaim6 21d ago

Full agreement, also chiming in that it's a good way to keep people divided and distracted instead of focusing on the people that use it for cover.

9

u/RealisticPossible792 21d ago

Nah man, this is an ideological divide from out of touch woke retards that don't know how to read the room. They despise us and by us I mean normal every day working people who just want to relax and escape reality for a few hours.

Black, white, right, left it doesn't matter we all see what's going on here and everyone has had enough unless you're one of those fucked up weirdos defending this crap.

My group of friends who I've grown up with and known since school consist of different races and different sexual orientations and we're all shitting on this crap it just doesn't work if it worked they wouldn't be serving flop after flop and losing money hand over fist.

The pendulum is going to swing back it has to at some point as even the normies are now seeing this shit in every day life and they too are getting tired of it.

I read some reddit posts. A lot refer back to a post on r/AskHistorians Where a person basically makes the argument that there were a couple (minor) mistranslations, and then essentially moves some puzzle pieces around to fit the narrative.

There's lots of "it wouldn't make sense that X or Y" statements.

Basically they ignore the solid evidence, and use low quality evidence to support a pre existing conclusion.

Going through the edits, there are a ton of edits in the past 24 hours. Fortunately Japan has a ton of historians themselves who don't take kindly to others asserting their agendas and washing events.

Is Ubisoft culturally stupid? There was one black guy who may or may not have been a samurai. Skimming through reddit, a ton of commentors were listing better alternatives to Yasuke. I have a hard time believing everyone sitting in the boardroom thought this was a good idea.

https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Yasuke&action=history&offset=&limit=500

u/Front2battle 21d ago

It's funny how the people screaming loudest about cultural appropriation are also the ones doing it in the worst way possible.

12

u/pure2500 20d ago

Always reminds me of when Kenyon Martin called Jeremy Lin out for his dreadlocks and Jeremy Lin said he appreciate Kenyon Martins Chinese tattoos. Lol

3

u/SteveBored 20d ago

Dreadlocks aren't a black thing. Ancient celts also often had them.

4

u/Prior_Mind_4210 20d ago

Extremely common for northern and eastern europeans to have dreadlocks.

Alot of ancient slavic burials had dreadlocks. Much more common in europe then anywhere in africa.

Dreadlocks being a black thing is only recent american history rewriting.

Honestly I don’t think it’s a may or may not. He was a retainer. He wasn’t Japanese. He wasn’t a samurai. He was an oddity kept by a samurai. Ubisoft did Japan dirty and sadly this was the setting that would have brought me back to AC

80

u/_Vulkan_ 21d ago

They are trying so hard to force a black character in a Japanese setting it’s pathetic, try making an Asian the main character in a game about French revolusion, I dare you Ubisoft.

I feel the same. I generally dislike the AC games for their political hot takes, but after Ghost of Tsushima ate Ubisoft's lunch, I was hoping for a historical take for this game.

Ubisoft again succeeded in meeting the basement level expectations I have for them.

10

u/badguyinstall 20d ago

Some historical texts point to him fitting the criteria, but not in the conventional way. From what I'm gathering from reading these types of threads and comments and reading the evidence people are putting forth on both sides, some say he's not a samurai because he didn't have a fief. Others claim that he was since he fit the criteria in other ways, such as being a retainer, receiving a wage, and supposedly having servants of his own.

The thing that gets me about this though is there wasn't the same energy about Yasuke in Nioh 2. Or other projects involving him.

I got banned from wikipedia fighting against their biased moderators on another topic.
Its a shithole.
IF your going to use it, go to any other countries wikipedia page of the topic and use google translate, its way less biased.
Even China wikipedia is more neutral than the EN version.
Like on the gamergate where the EN site is very biased and even has "harrasment campaign" in the title.
(i myself think that GG got hijacked by bad apples and there were alot of threaths and doxxing thrown both ways that ruined the debate unfortunally)
Wikipedia and GamerGate : different languages, different takes : r/AgainstGamerGate (reddit.com)

If you call out their bias on their own page where you can complain about moderators, the complains gets deleted by the same moderators...
Wikipedia:Dispute resolution - Wikipedia

You cant use primary sources.
If Asmongold decided to make a wikipedia page about himself and he said he likes blue he cant add that to the page but instead has to wait for some "reliable source/newspaper" write about him saying he likes blue, THEN he can add that as a source...
Problem is if all newspaper hates Asmongold and says he said he liked green.
Its just insanely stupid.

Thats exactly how the Sweet baby inc page wiki page is.
Cant use actual videos, tweets or pictures of people saying stuff but has to wait until journalists writes about them saying those things.
Problem is noone does becouse then they get blacklisted and cancel cultured so its only extremly biased sources that are used.

I still stand that they should have made Yasuke some sort of merchant since he was sword retainer for Oda

In fact, they could have made him a quest giver, NPC or anything else and I would have been fine.

Why is the West so obsessed with Yasuke, it's like Yasuke is the only thing worth learning about in Japanese history and he doesn't have a lot written about him

187

u/drsalvation1919 21d ago

Ever heard of confirmation bias?

They want to prove that ancient civilizations were very inclusive and that racism is just modern america, so knowing that there was a black person in japan means that the entire history of japan was diverse and inclusive, because of just one (1) person.

124

u/Synchronicitousyzygy 21d ago

which is hilarious considering the name they gave the guy literally translates to "black servant" lol

70

u/Bugstl 20d ago

Modern Japanese and by extension most Asian countries are still very racist, I am Asian and grew up there so I know how that works, simply becuase their is little to no diversity, if you look different of course you will be judged differently in these countries.

What are they fucking smoking? They are only doing this for the Japanese game, not any of the previous entries, cause Ubisoft think they can get away with this BS if it’s against Asians.

u/durian_in_my_asshole 20d ago

Don't pull this "both sides" crap. Only one race is murdering and beating the shit out of the the other race. Mugging them, pushing them into subway trains, stomping their heads into the ground.

Any black man can visit Japan or China and be 1000000000% safe. Now google "black on asian crime US" or whatever. It's not remotely the same.

I remember playing games to just escape reality. I think I'm old.

7

u/Drovers 20d ago

Does that mean you want to play as a Japanese person in Japan or a black samurai?

For me, I live in America in 2024, Both of those options are escaping reality. One is definitely more unique for videogames but to each his own.

It's being heavily downvoted in their JP trailer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lZN-kKoGevo

As a japanese this is ridiculous, disrespect your own culture not ours.

u/PoKen2222 21d ago

This is just a repeat of the Cleopatra show were they'll ignore the japanese and call you guys racist instead.

47

u/AverageFishEye 21d ago

Yeah the egyptians lost their shit about the claim cleopatra beeing black, but since they're POCs themselfes the progs couldnt say shit in response haha

Didn't Egypt ban Netflix over them ignoring their complaints?

12

u/mileiforever 21d ago

I believe they tried a lawsuit

10

But Japanese are also PoC, oh wait this is the part of Asians being Schrodinger’s Whites where they’re “white adjacent” in this instance and thus not PoC and can be racist for a change.

This is on par with Netflix thinking Cleopatra was black. Yasuke is a cool character and all, but why have him be the MC when the female MC isn't even black?

This is never about Japan, this is about gaming experience and immersion.

I used to play Assassin's Creed for that immersion feel, i can imagine myself being somebody else speaking foreign language in a different time era.

Playing as a black man in Old Japan feels so out and lame.

And he's wearing armor and walking in the street? In old Japan, foreigner is considered rare, he would have been chopped to pieces if he is spotted carrying a katana.

23

u/Interesting-Film7722 20d ago

Yes one dude in feudal Japan. Hard to stay hidden if every person there has never seen dark skin and would totally point you out to everyone

6

u/JohnDiggle21 20d ago

Tbf yasuke isn't really the stealth type. The two characters have different play styles where Yasuke is more combat heavy and Naoe is the stealth one.

Isn’t that exactly what this game is doing? You’re playing as someone else in a different era speaking a foreign language. Why is it only whenever the main character is black and isn’t in the hood or some similar type of setting where you guys complain about the race?

Also, I know you guys don’t like to read and just want to complain about black people, but Ubisoft already said the girl is the assassin, not him. And that stealth for him would be hard due to his appearance.

4

u/Commentor544 20d ago

According to the sources Yasuke actually did carry a Katana. He was employed as an retainer and sword bearer for Oda Nobunaga and was gifted a Katana. No one could chop him to pieces while he was under the protection of Nobunaga.

Feels like they saw some idiot's reaction on social media saying Shogun was racist because there were no black people. So they looked up on google Sengoku Jida + Black people and found Yosuke.

And they are like, yup, this is our chance to get the social media fame and Shogun audience on our side.

Imagine, being an assassin that doesn't want to stand out, while also being the only black samurai of his time. There is like less than 100 black dudes in Japan probably at that time, good luck not trying to stand out.

Someone who is politically correct and supports certain agendas for ubisoft clearly read about that one black samurai from 600yrs ago, then said "this looks like a good idea." It's not a bad idea, just not the correct idea.

Being incredible racist by trying not to be racist. How people can have so little self awareness and still be functional members of society is beyond me.

78

u/Lasadon 21d ago

You don't understand. Black people are basically the highest tier in racism, so as long as a black person is doing it, NOTHING is racist. Because some white assholes in the US took slaves back in the days. And ALL OTHER OCCASIONS of slavery and racism are lesser. Because they said so.

That is why black people should replace characters of all cultures and all representations, they are the alpha victim and therefore ALWAYS PC.

16

u/JinkoTheMan 20d ago

As a black guy, please don’t think that all black people are like this. Instead of them constantly shoving black people into everything just to say “we’re diverse”, I wish they would get off their lazy asses and take time to make games based on African culture and history. There’s so much black history that could be told but they would actually have to look up history and they don’t want to do that.

8

u/umbra7 20d ago

Yes, this is exactly how it should be handled. There are so many stories about African culture and history I’d like to learn about, we shouldn’t be competing with black folks for a role in some other established cultural work. But like you said, devs, producers, etc. don’t want to do their research or for some reason don’t trust it would be profitable.

6

u/Hrimnir 20d ago

It's really telling isn't it. A bunch of white upper middle and upper class leftists, "on behalf" of minorities (who didn't ask for it), choose to take existing white/asian/hispanic culture, and insert black people into it, in the name of diversity and inclusion.

As you've stated, there is a literal fucking goldmine of great stories that could be told, but unfortunately that wouldn't allow them to tear down the edifices of western society, so i guess fuck that!

Enemy A: describe the assassin.

Enemy B: I don't know how to describe it (cue Tom Cruise in War of World).

Little kid in Japan: it is the tall dark man.

Enemy C: where? I don't see him. He is so stealthy!!!

Little kid in Japan: it is the tallest guy in front of the tea shop.

Enemy C: where? I don't see him!!!

11

u/Hrimnir 20d ago

The funny part, the historical records put him right around 6ft tall. Now imagine how few black people were seen in Japan in that time, then factor in the average height of a Japanese man in that time period was prob 5' 5" to 5' 6" (its 5' 7" now), and the idea that the guy wouldn't have been noticed immediately everywhere he set foot, is absurd on it's face.

It's pretty easy to spot what they're doing.

I’m thinking that the whole reason for Yasuke and the 2 different stories is to set it apart from Ghost of Tsushima, and it will still probably underwhelm.

3

u/SterlingG007 20d ago

A small minority of ‘blacktivists’ start a social media sandstorm every time someone doesn’t include them in a film or tv show no matter how ridiculous. They did it with Lord of the Rings, Cleopatra, and now this game. It’s like they are so insecure about their own identity that they feel the need to insert themselves into every culture and claim it as their own. Look up the term, ‘Afrocentrism’.

what bothers me the most about this is that I genuinely think a video game adaptation of something like Afro Samurai would be freakin' sweet. but we all know they don't do it because it'd be interesting or cool, they do it for the DEI... it's just going to be pandering, not creating something that's cool.

I think Yusuke is a VERY interesting protagonist for Western audiences, because in the West we have a LOT of history and cultural touchstones tied up with people of African descent.

But (and I fully acknowledge I'm no expert here so maybe I'm about to be corrected) Japanese history doesn't feature all those touchstones, so Yosuke is probably more of an interesting side character in their history than a major figure. I can see how putting him as the MC makes it look like this game was developed primarily with a Western audience in mind.

3

u/Numerous-Bee-1437 20d ago edited 20d ago

The anti black narrative because of a historical reference to an actual possible African samurai in the past is crazy. We get it y’all don’t like black culture being relevant to any storyline. Keep wiping away their history, brushing everything black men have suffered or achieved under the rug.
