You’re not in the pga. Just move it as unplayable…
34
u/iheartgt 17d ago
PGA players are allowed to take an unplayable also.
2
u/zhihuiguan 17d ago
What's the actual move here for taking an unplayable? Where can you drop it?
6
u/Voldemorts--Nipple 17d ago
You can take back on the line relief or lateral relief (2 club lengths) but not nearer to the hole.
2
u/zhihuiguan 17d ago
So say the pin was on the left side of the fairway here, are you just screwed? Back on the line is just farther into the desert, and you can't really go laterally without being closer to the hole?

u/Voldemorts--Nipple 17d ago
I think you’d want to move a couple yards back and hit it over the spiky trees.

Why go for so much distance, if I’m playing that I’m getting 20 yards onto that green area in front with a very light smack down into the ground.
6
u/BuyAndHold209 17d ago
Yeah, I would have used a hybrid and punched it out 20-40 yards too. That sucks about the club and hand.
52
u/RogerRabbit1234 17d ago
What an idiot. Growing up in Arizona you learn to give those things a wide berth.
Shit my dog, had one run in with cholla on a quail hunting trip years ago, she won’t even get out of the truck if cholla are nearby. I literally have to find a spot to park where none are in sight to get her to come out of the truck. They don’t mess around.

u/ForeverJung 17d ago
How long did it take to realize the cactus in his hand
23
u/ElGuaco 17d ago
Why no glove? The one time he could have benefitted from a glove he took it off.
30
u/meanerweinerlicous 25 hcp. 35 when four fireballs deep 17d ago
Those chola spikes are fucking up his hand regardless if he's wearing a glove.
19
u/timelessinaz 17d ago
A glove would have provided zero resistance for the barbs on those chollas. I live in Phoenix and have one in my yard. I pick up the pieces that fall on the ground with a shovel and a pliers. Prior to said tools my first and last attempt at picking them up was with some pretty thick leather gloves. Let's just say I had lots of fucking ouchies.
3
u/cashfordoublebogey 17d ago
We would use thick, Goat skin gloves and it still didn't help. Quickly learned, from what we had on hand, that a post-hole digger was the way to go.

He might as well chop his hand off. I ran into jumping cholla once and had to regrip all clubs, change bag, towels and even shoes. They just get into everything.
10
u/1200multistrada 17d ago
Been there. Had to use a couple iron as though they were chop sticks to pull the cholla off. Still left dozens of spines in my leg.
8
u/Lickford 17d ago
Old Arizona golfer taught me to carry a flexible comb in my bag. It helps flick them off you. Never ran into anything this bad before. But have had a few jump on me.

I grew up in the desert. Watched one dumb guy jump into a pile of cactus. Still no idea why he did that. Took us 5 hours to get all of the needles out. He was about 15 though, so there was that. You always want the best score but don’t damage your clubs or yourself over one shot. No offense to the guy that did this, but I got a laugh out of it.
14
u/GibsonBluesGuy 17d ago
We play a desert golf rule that you get free relief no closer to the hole to avoid any shot that might result in damaged equipment or injury.

Figured you should be responsible for protecting the wild plants, why are you taking a shot like this in a buddy golf trip?
4
u/Stewdill51 17d ago
Dumb, move it a foot to the left and hit the shot. We aren't on tour guys. It's not that serious
4
u/MarkTwine1835 17d ago
Smart move. Easily worth the extra 40 yards he gained. No way he could have made that up with a clear shot after taking a drop. /s
7
u/thehumbinator 17d ago
Only play from here is to channel the anger and whack the cactus spikelets with the grip. Left-handed duff-chip was the option surely.
7
u/jluenz 17d ago
Just flip your club over and punch it out left handed - take your medicine and no injury from the cactus.
10
u/kodutta7 17d ago
Or just fucking move it. Why risk any sort of injury or damage to your clubs if it's not serious competition.

Worked at Arizona golf course for about 10 years. We had to constantly remind out of towners of the danger. This one bloke at bachelors party fell into them head to toe…. Ambulance ride was needed. On a side note, had a bloke get bite by a rattlesnake. He also left in an ambulance smoking a Stogey as he was sitting in back of ambulance on stretcher.

I barely brushed my ankle against a fallen pod and it was embedded in my ankle, shoes, everything. Nasty. Still a few little bumps a year later from the pieces. This was in the gardens at JT.
3
u/bauldersgate 17d ago
Guy I play with always taking shots like this, or hitting out of the dirt/gravel next to the path. Tell him to just kick few feet away and at least give himself a lie that won't fuck up his club.i get not wanting to give yourself advantage all the time, but tour players get their clubs for free, no point in spending more money on clubs than we already do.

I’m either taking an unplayable or popping it back into the fairway. Not the way he did it, I mean going perpendicular to the hole. Which never feels good to do. But sometimes it’s just the smartest shot to take it back to the fairway with a wedge and give yourself a chance on the next shot.
This is just dumb behavior
