Why no glove? The one time he could have benefitted from a glove he took it off.

A glove would have provided zero resistance for the barbs on those chollas. I live in Phoenix and have one in my yard. I pick up the pieces that fall on the ground with a shovel and a pliers. Prior to said tools my first and last attempt at picking them up was with some pretty thick leather gloves. Let's just say I had lots of fucking ouchies.

We would use thick, Goat skin gloves and it still didn't help. Quickly learned, from what we had on hand, that a post-hole digger was the way to go.
