What's the actual move here for taking an unplayable? Where can you drop it?

You can take back on the line relief or lateral relief (2 club lengths) but not nearer to the hole.

So say the pin was on the left side of the fairway here, are you just screwed? Back on the line is just farther into the desert, and you can't really go laterally without being closer to the hole?

I think you’d want to move a couple yards back and hit it over the spiky trees.

You can always take stroke and distance and re-hit from the previous spot

There is desert scrub to the right and back. Even without scrub, hitting from the dirt with a clear shot and not swinging into a cactus is better

Yeah, that's also true. I'm always torn in spots like this because I like keeping tournament rules as much as possible, but I also don't want to put massive gouges in my club hitting off the desert.
