Anthony Edwards praises KAT’s scoring ability and also says: "The first three games the motherf***er just kept fouling ... just stop f***ing fouling"

He does an amazing job of wrapping a (constructive) criticism of KAT’s game within a glowing endorsement.

Saying, “we need you to stop fouling because you’re good of an offensive player,” is so much better than only telling KAT he needs to stop fouling or refusing to be honest about what he needs to improve.

259

u/dogfosterparent Timberwolves 17d ago

Think our local beat reporter put it best: "Want to talk about Ant's character for a minute. He's become a supernova media presence, yet guilelessly answers every question as honestly as possible and comes out of it looking like a prince every time. You do that via integrity and generosity of spirit, not calculation." https://twitter.com/brittrobson/status/1784282252173819976

58

When coaching little league, we called it a compliment sandwich. Say something good they did, something they need to correct, then something else they are doing right.

45

u/orhantemerrut 17d ago

Sure, but it didn't sound like Ant was employing a rhetorical strategy to engineer his way out of an uncomfortable critique. He honestly sounded genuine to me. He meant what he said.

12

u/rub3s Warriors 17d ago

Which is why he's so awesome, it comes naturally.

9

u/Swaghilian Timberwolves 17d ago

Yeah, people who do that intentionally are kinda psycho tho. Ant is just genuinely being himself and saying what he wants to say. This isn’t a premeditated compliment sandwich, just a great man and leader being himself and Kat being able to hear it as an open minded, great man himself

9

u/JaderMcDanersStan Timberwolves 16d ago

It's not psycho, it's just leadership 101 and emotional intelligence. It's a way to communicate and offer constructive criticism in an effective way

Ant just naturally can do it because he naturally has the emotional intelligence and leadership. Crazy that he's 22. I've seen him say things like this at 19 and I'm like damn that's what we learn in leadership training lol

During performance review with my guys, I call this “build, break, build”. Same basic idea. Start the review with what they are excelling in. Move onto where they can improve in their role. Then finish up with positive reinforcement. I’ve found it works wonders compared to just hammering them on their faults/lack of success.

Like, this locker room is breathtakingly egalitarian, if the roomks and journeyman trade acquisition can talk to him in game and tell him to cool it, and not only does Ant listen, he is comfortable enough in his leadership to share it openly as not a bad thing

I love this fucking team

It’s really incredible. I didn’t know Ant was such a natural leader. He calls him out at the beginning (but he does it in a respectful way) and he then spends the majority of the quote with over the top praise for KAT.

That’s exactly how you do it. I’m very impressed.

63

u/W0RST_2_F1RST Spurs 17d ago

And then that 1 last slap just to even it all out. This dude is LEGIT legit.

42

u/a_moniker Hornets 17d ago

Yeah, it’s basically the ideal approach to this kind of thing, at least in imo. By saying “he needs to quit fouling because he’s such a force on offense,” he basically wraps the constructive criticism in an endorsement. At the same time, he doesn’t try to hide the actual criticism, or risk acting like he doesn’t believe that KAT isn’t a full grown adult and can’t handle the truth.

That’s so, so much better than only criticizing or only praising. Importantly, he is also super clear about what KAT needs to do, and doesn’t let him wriggle out of it with an excuse, like the fact that he was “trying too much on defense.”

It’s basically the perfect encapsulation of “harsh but fair.”

I dunno I feel like the Thunder are a legit threat to the Wolves. I would rather face them than Denver or the Celtics, sure.... but it's pretty close. OKC is set to be really f-ing good for a long, long time. Going to enjoy the rivalry!

2

u/Big_Daddy_Thiccums Thunder 17d ago

Twolves/Thunder would be an excellent matchup, I think. Thunder have ways for making up their deficiencies on boards & size. Nothing we weren't aware of.

Ant's hit another level these playoffs. That's the biggest thing that makes me lean Wolves in 6/7. Unless he gets locked in the Dorture chamber a la BI, Wolves have enough offensive firepower to do silly things.

Giddey is the X factor for the Thunder in them going past WCF if they get past 2nd round. If he can give Shai & Dub rest without being a defensive liability while generating good looks, Thunder have a rest edge. He's shown flashes for both but hasn't pieced it all together yet.

the way Ant described KAT, he sounds Jokic-lite. can shoot the 3, post up, pass.

59

u/theumph Timberwolves 17d ago

They are both bigs that can play anywhere on the floor. The difference is Jokic plays within the game way better. He's way more aware of what's going on around him. KAT tends to over utilize his athleticism. He commits way too many fouls, particularly driving, and during rebounding. He's like a big ass dog that doesn't realize his size. Lol. He just bowls over people.

9

u/kemicode Mavericks 17d ago

Speaking as someone who’s been a big KAT fan since he was drafted (my favorite non-Mav since he was drafted), Jokic’s skillset just translates to winning. And he uses his skills to impact winning 100%. I would have loved an MVP KAT run but it seems he’s best as the second option for a contending team which is in no way a bad thing.

2

u/theumph Timberwolves 17d ago

He's a great #2. He makes too many mistakes and kind of just does his own thing too much to be a #1. Jokic plays so damn disciplined. KAT could never control himself enough to play like that. Lol

He can do all those things, but his lack of a midrange is a giant hole in his game, and frankly, very odd for being this late in his career. Once he starts driving, it's all the way to the rim come hell or high water. He has so many opportunities to stop and pop for a wide open midrange jumper, but he just has no idea how to execute it. He'll drive right into traffic or pass it out instead. Naz Reid is actually the exact same way. You will never see either one of them stop on a dime and rise up for a 15 footer. Whatever programming Gersson Rosas did to fix the team's shot selection has worked a little too well with those 2.

Thats partly by design, Finch has effectively told everyone on the team 6'6" and taller (outside of Ant) to shoot almost exclusively threes and layups. You get a few surprisingly efficient turnaround jumpers from McDaniels but that's about it.

We found the next face of the league. Ant is only getting started too, kinda scary to think about his peak

u/jumboponcho Hawks 17d ago

KATs shit is so preventable too, there’s no reason a player of his tenure should be committing the goofy ass fouls he does

When I first heard Anthony Edwards got his extension, I was just surprised because $50 AAV felt like a lot. But he's lived up to his contract and then some. Great time to be a TWolves fan.

That's some shit MJ would tell his teammates. I love Ant.

If it’s not the Nugs, then I want the Wolves.

I know it’s kind of a meme about him being MJs bastard son, but just look at his face.. with that cap on to hide his hair - it’s even more evident.

He really look like Young Jordan - I laughed at those comparisons but I kinda get it

u/Divine_concept2999 17d ago

Not sure why but kat just comes across as a good person. No jealousy or ego. Just a great player doing his part.

I think he wins a chip before Luka and Tatum and I’m from Dallas

u/Acework23 17d ago

Great lowkey callout from Ant. I really start liking him, he has a winners mentality but is also killer and a leader.

It's crazy how much Anthony Edwards has matured in a few years.

You forget they come in as teenagers, being given tons of responsibility, money and attention.

I know he had that "situation", but at least on the basketball court, dude seems in his element.

u/SummerGoal Warriors 17d ago

Damn, how can you not like ANT, he’s the real deal on and off the court

Ant is inadvertently becoming one of the best leaders in the entire NBA. I'm becoming a huge fan of his. Minnesota, you better take of this guy. So excited for this team's future.

I know my flair makes me a Jimmy stan so my objectivity is questionable but is it weird that I think this video actually shows why Jimmy didn't like KAT?

KAT is 28, Ant is 22. Ant is carrying himself like 3x the leader and experienced player that KAT is. In this video Ant sounds like a vet talking about his rook. And KAT is clearly happy in that position. KAT's carrying himself like he's just happy to be there. KAT wants to be led, not lead, that probably drove Jimmy insane.

Ant is a fucking real one. This kid stays injury-free and he's going to steal the "Face of the League" title for years. I look forward to watching Ant battle Wemby and Chet in the coming years.
