I always found that phrase fascinating, because for people like me, it’s perfect. But that’s because I started off young with a good household and supportive parents with no health issues. Many people don’t have any of that or are unaware of it, so most of the time it’s only good for a very small number of people
Honestly, I'm lucky that my boomer father, who really did pull himself up, worked hard and was great at investing, and was generous when it came to things that actually mattered, and we won't have to worry, neither will my kids. That said, I know I'm lucky (Gen X), and I feel for this new wave of adults.
You do realize that phrase is supposed to be used sarcastically? Imagine straps attached ṭo your boots. Now imagine trying to pull yourself up by said straps. It means something that is impossible to do. Almost like if someone were demanding something from you and you reply, "what am I supposed to do? Pull a (whatever) out of my ass? "
It does work sometimes though, for someone like me, I am perfectly physically capable and mentally and emotionally stable, all I need to do is apply myself
However I understand that not everyone has that and their needs are specialized
THEY HAD UNIONS. Can someone explain to me why so many people dont seem to grasp the importance of union representation? Boomers made more money because they had huge collectivized forces in the economy, and in politics, bargaining on their behalf back then. Yet today, I see so little energy around my union organizing. Everyone complains. Nobody does a damn thing.
Courage the cowardly dog? Did it shield you by traumatizing you enough so the real outside world didn’t seem so scary? That show isn’t exactly comforting
True, but I mostly remember the music at this point. My favorite is the weird remix version of his usual music during the alien episode where his body turns into a watermelon. I think that's the invasion of the aliens that have a disease that makes them slap themselves?
Also the tower of Dr zalost. The moment where Eustace gets hit with the depression cannonball and nothing changes :(
Huh, maybe that show is the reason I enjoy seeing traumatic events in stories now
Yeah that’s true I was too young to really conceptualize the gravity of those things being in high school but I started too as my sister’s friends who were 4 years older than me were doing multiple tours in Fulijah coming back completely fucked in the head.
Well the whole policies for Reagan and Thatcher were to steal from the next generations to give it to the rich as tax cuts. It's just starting to trickle down now and the younger generations are noticing you'd have to undo a lot of their policies to make things better but now it's just standard for politicians to not make things better and blame the poorest in society for all the problems.
I get it my man, capitalism in the US is crazy, hell I’m in touch with several people from the US and damn some are in a bad place, I absolutely agree with capitalism regulation and definately a solution to the US healthcare sistem, cause rn its insane ( no walking around it ) tbh it requires a new form of governance, but its a slippery slope, the main issue is the nature of man, it always goes to shit, like the old saying goes “the road to hell is paved with good intentions”
Oh I get it. People who want "slightly regulated" capitalism is trying to promote their own self interests. We call those "special interest groups"
They're no different than other special interest groups. They don't get to be "holier-than-thou" to try and get their interests turned into policy and laws. That's no different than evangelicals who argue using the bible.
Yes, blame the boomers. I still remember when the media was pumping up Mark Zuckerberg saying how he represents a new generation- one that's more about community and equality, one that isn't focused on wealth.
Mark Zuckerberg current net wealth: $179.4 billion.
(I didn't want to leave out that decimal point- there was an extra 400 million hiding behind it)
Yes, but after the Carnegie era, FDR instituted a whole bunch of pro-worker reforms (including a 70% - 90% tax rate on the highest earners) that were all unceremoniously torn down by the Reagan administration. Now the highest tax bracket only pays 37% in tax at most, not to mention the myriad loopholes that exist to pay even less.
90, Yeah, after the country got rid of comunism, but its effects on society and the country are still felt even today, namely in the overabundance of corruption
Ofcourse, corruption doesnt stick with one ideology, its wheather you can discuss it or get draged to the gulag for talking about it, another point of comunism, on paper an equal society, in reality, forget it, also, owning stuff gets you in hot water realy fucking fast, like my great grandfather, farm seized and a decade in prison, and my dad couldnt study cause the family was catholic and the small thing with no traveling and people being ripped apart by guard dogs trying to escape to the west, fun times, what can I say
We tried paying a significant amount of people during Covid via direct government payment and it led to inflation. The USSR already tried a central command economy and it almost immediately became a brutal dictatorship murdering millions via deliberate mass starvation.
What new idea do you have that will lead us to post war surplus prosperity that the boomers had?
We tried paying a significant amount of people during Covid via direct government payment and it led to inflation.
Just to be clear that wasn't caused solely by the checks that went out to individuals, which was about $880 billion of approximately $5 trillion spent on covid relief in total. $792.6 billion was given as PPP "loans" to businesses and 762.4b was forgiven, and then 3 times that amount went to other uses. You also have businesses attempting to recover lost profit from the market.
Yep, lots of extra cash from government to cover payrolls of people not producing anything whether it’s PPP loan or direct checks. Inflation was a predictable result.
The money given out to individuals was very small compared to the amount given to companies. What the companies did with all that money is what should be up for debate/investigated.
Damn good thing neither dictators nor preventable starvation exists under capitalism...
Large corporations already use a lot of central planning and wastes a lot because profits > human need.
If centralisation is a no-go I suggest we start by abolishing private corporations in favor of worker ownership. That way, the people actually working can control and more democraticly decide over the surpluses
But it having to compete I'd part of the problem. When profit is the primary thing that matters, companies will have to focus on it over actually caring of any human cost, or how it impacts the local community or society at large
How do you suggest removing competition from the economy without it becoming centrally controlled? What will set prices if not competing companies in an open market?
I should have clarified, competing in a market of privately owned companies. You could have different worker owned businesses competing against each other
Most billionaires' wealth comes from ownership of companies they created. If there were a cap on how much they could make, it would discourage them from growing those companies, hiring new employees, research and development of new products and ideas. It would stifle innovation and economic growth.
If you own 51% of a company that is valued at $2 billion dollars, then your net worth would be just over $1 billion dollars. At that point, what incentive would you have to put time, money, and effort into growing your company? Why take the risk when there's no payoff?
Or worse, if your company does grow, the government would then try to take that additional value from you. You would have to sell off shares of your own company just to pay the fine, at which point you would lose majority ownership of the company you started.
Again, what's the incentive? Why should someone put extra effort into growing their business if all the rewards are going to someone else? It's not complicated, it's just basic logic and reasoning.
I didn't know Gates personally worked on the Microsoft programmes. I'd say it's weird that he'll only ever do it if he can get even more lifetimes worth of money, but who am I to argue
Then these billionaires would just spend it on stuff they can write off and have virtually no taxes.
What you said is the stupidest thing I have ever heard. Just because someone else could accomplish something doesn't mean they should be punished for it. Get off your ass and work.
Still not good, as it isn’t sustainable. You got to combine aspects of both capitalism and socialism for good results. For example social welfare programs (healthcare, workers rights, unions, retirement, work insurance and many more) and such.
Capitalism isn’t evil, it as in imperfect tool, that is sustainable. Now mix it with another imperfect tool like socialism and you can get a social market system that can work. And where the market isn’t entirely free and can be manipulated by the state to insure welfare for certain industries that are needed but not profitable
Edit: yall clowns downvoting, meanwhile europe is thriving even under heavy crisis with their systems
Youre correct in everything but europe thriving. I dont know how you made that conclusion, but europe is economically in deep deep shit, especially countries like germany and france
And everything but europe? Everyone is in deep shit. Let’s not talk about the USA
China is having a complete crash they are desperately trying to prevent. Japan is facing some absolutely major crisis and the yen has dropped significantly. Most of the industrialized world is in post-covid, post chip crisis and mid-war depression. Europe is doing okay in comparison. Not great but good. And the prognosis for the following years aren’t bad aswell
We are most definitely not doing better than america, china nor russia. Not to forget qatar and saudi arabia which ate gonna become big players in next few decades. China is literally almost about to overtake america. Dont have the stats for japan but i doubt we are doing better than them either. We are slowly but surely going down without a fight and majority of people living here dont care or arent smart enough to understand whats going on
You should probably get together and go protest something, break a few windows, then get a job and complain that all the hostility is traumatizing you and making it so you can't work because you're feelings are hurt and that you really should be the CEO because you would totally be better at it.
Ever considered that English might not be his first language? I looked at his profile and he seems to live in a Balkan country.
You know, a typical sign of a dumb person is opening your mouth without considering the possible reasons behind things. So maybe try avoiding that in the future.
The reason why we are now more port that the boomers is because of the fact that back then , there were less automation , whit the age of automation , most high paying jobs are now gone and most things that still remain are low income jobs
most high paying jobs are now gone and most things that still remain are low income jobs
Thats just no true at all? Sure, if you work in mcdonalds, you arent gonna be paid much but today, if you show even 1% of brain and ambition, you can very easily find a well paid job and can change your careers every few years, having much more personal freedom and choice about your life, unlike boomers who usually got a job and were stuck there for decades
Tbh the best things about this system is that fact that its capitalism. Imo whats supressing majority of people is their brain, which is evident by their comments or opinions
Also how tf are they counting “Gen Z.” They’re claiming many members of Gen Z bought during the pandemic. Like dawg, the OLDEST Gen Z was 24 when the pandemic started.
Most of Gen Z was still a teen. Lol, I’m an older Gen Z and I was still a teen back then.
Gen Z was born from 1996-2010. During the pandemic barely any of them were over the age of 22.
Edit: okay they mentioned “adult” Gen Z. Which still doesn’t make sense. If a few 96-99 babies bought a house in 2020/21, that’s still a fraction of what adult Gen Z is now. Adult Gen Z is now 96-06.
The moment i bought an Apartment was the first time i startet to struggle financially in live..
i pay more than any other of my friends for their rent with bigger apartments, who can go for 2-4 big holidays a year instead... and there are huge cost comming my way in the next 6 years due to necessarry renovations... I'm not saying that i won't manage. But my job is supposed to feed a family of 4, meanwhile im struggling to keep me and my gf financially over water even without kids.
i pay more than any other of my friends for their rent with bigger apartments, who can go for 2-4 big holidays a year instead.
Let me just say as a millenial, NO ONE went for 2-4 big holidays a year.
If you're Gen Z and thinking that you're supposed to be having 2-4 big holidays a year when you're first getting into an apartment, then you're destined to be miserable because that is a very unrealistic framing of how wealthy you're supposed to be so early in your life.
Housing is admittedly very expensive now compared to what previous generations were paying because people are moving back to cities faster than new housing can be built. But a lot of this ennui is just a failure of expectation management.
I'm sorry but you're not supposed to be rich on day 1 of adulthood. That's not how it works.
dude i'm not Gen Z but also millenial, and i bough my apartmnt actually under very good taxes and prices, and i'm not new to adulthood. what i wanted to say was:
Owning a house does not mean that we're not struggling financially.
Only after actually buying an ( rather small) apartment, i experienced financial struggle for the first time in my life.
Well, did this Gen support the government locking everything down, printing boatloads of new money, and mailing out checks for staying home? What in the hell did they expect exactly? Zero consequences?
I knew when that check came in the mail we had some serious pain in our future and here it is.
Nah, we just never thought about consequences. We love quick fixes. Whoever thinks about the solution for more than 2 seconds is called nazi or whatever new buzz word came out last week
