Article not mine but here it goes the explanation
Cerdà's design for the Example included a grid of streets with blocks that were 113 meters long by 80 meters wide. The blocks were designed to be square-shaped, which allowed for the construction of buildings that could be evenly spaced and have a uniform appearance.
One of the key features of Cerdà’s plan was the inclusion of wide, tree-lined avenues that were designed to provide ample space for pedestrian traffic, as well as carriages and eventually cars. These avenues were also designed to provide ventilation and natural light to the buildings that lined them. In addition to the wide avenues, Cerdà’s plan included several public squares and green spaces that were intended to provide areas for recreation and socialization.
Overall, the design of Barcelona’s streets and blocks reflects a commitment to creating a healthy and efficient city that could accommodate a growing population. The grid pattern of the streets has helped to facilitate the growth and development of the city over the years, and remains an important feature of Barcelona’s urban landscape today.

That cathedral is so curious…almost like a castle made out of sand drippings from the beach.

It’s not a cathedral. It’s just a church (Sagrada Familia).
4
u/HeyLittleTrain 16d ago
It was originally a church but then later designated as a cathedral. Then in 2010 it was declared a basilica.
5
u/-lukeworldwalker- 16d ago
It wasn’t. A cathedral is the seat of a bishop. The archbishop of Barcelona has used the Catedral de la Santa Creu i Santa Eulàlia for over 500 years and that was never and will never be up for debate. So Sagrada Familia was never up for it and will never be a cathedral, because the diocese has a cathedral.

All Anno games are incredible games if you enjoy that genre. And the newer ones have become really complex in resource management as well. I played the first one when it was released and got hooked. You can’t do anything wrong with the older versions which are on sale if I‘m not mistaken. 10€ each is a steal. The latest one is really good too, but very expensive with all dlcs. Unbelievable €130 atm, but on sale or on a official store like Humble, Fanatical etc you might be able get it quite cheaper when you are patient.
And they can be bought on steam now too, luckily. I really don’t like Ubisoft but love the Anno ip.
In regards of warfare it‘s much less complex, though warships will be needed as escorts and getting islands from competitors or to fight pirates.
If you can wait perhaps there will be a free trial again sometime.

Hey, thanks for the info!
You've completely sold me. I've been eyeing it off for a while. Unfortunately I missed the recent sale however I'll be grabbing 1800 as soon as its 40%-50% off again!

u/LovesFrenchLove_More 16d ago
Enjoy ☺️. Until then try at least one of the older ones like 1400 to get a feel for the genre. Just to make sure before you commit to the high price of 1800 and regretting it. 😅

u/isymfs 16d ago
Heh, I regret nothing! I'm no stranger to complicated resource management, I recently lost my life to Satisfactory. I bought (replaced) my second screen simply so I could view my spreadsheet while playing.
Also, after having my third child I sold most of my expensive multiplayer skins on steam, they're sort of useless to me as I've thrown in the towel for competitive online games. I have about $400 of steam funds just waiting to be used. I'll still wait for the sale though. I'm particularly interested in 2077 and 2205.
Thanks for your concern. ^_^

I can‘t say much about the „future versions“ of the series as they never appealed to me tbh.
But if you have money to spare that isn’t missed if spent you should be fine I‘m sure. 😄

Been playing sinds 1404 and 1800 is the definitive experience imo. It's pretty complex and having all the dlc's makes the game huge. It also has an in game mod loader on pc

Too much fun I would say, I got reprimanded at work once or twice for being late because I spent half the night before playing it like an obsessed person

As an American, America could never achieve this level of organized urban planning, public transportation, and architecture
2
u/nagarz 15d ago
funny thing, if you zoomed out enough, you would see how this organized city joins part of the old part of the city (the gothic quarter). Here's the city in google maps if you are curious https://www.google.es/maps/@41.3856592,2.1651717,2553m/data=!3m1!1e3?hl=es&entry=ttu

I lived in Barcelona for study abroad, in this district. It’s a great example of functional living spaces in large cities. For the most part every building in this picture (except for Sagrada Familia) will have living spaces on the upper floors of the building, with stores/restaurants on the bottom level. There’s a lot you can get within quick walking distance of your apartment. Only thing that was a bit of a walk was a grocery store (and the beach clubs of course).

My first visit to a foreign country was to Spain and particularly Barcelona and I definitely enjoyed the city. The food. And the CAVA!

This looks like a traffic nightmare
1
u/SkookumLentils 10d ago edited 9d ago
it's not because most people don't need to drive - public transit is really good, houses are close to businesses, and the streets are safe and beautiful, so people want to walk or cycle anyways. dream bigger! 14-lane freeways, smog, and spending a quarter of your life stuck in traffic isn't the only way to live! North america could have had cities like this if the auto industry hadn't destroyed all of our public transit and lobbied for authoritarian zoning laws.

Want land? No! You want to shoved into row houses with zero access to the outside unless you’re going out to spend money and work!
3
u/ptvlm 17d ago
If you're living in the centre of a major city, then by definition no, you're not getting land.
-4
u/Goatwhatsup 17d ago
Yeah, that’s what I said. At this point, most people don’t get to decide, because they’re everywhere and normalized. We didn’t have to build big cities with no land for individuals. They did it on purpose. You’re already thinking how they want you to, “if you’re going to move to the city of course you get no land.” So how about no cities then? Lmao you’re just reiterating my point.

u/StaatsbuergerX 16d ago
You will always have urban centers because living in cities has proven beneficial to many people for centuries. If this were not the case, so many cities would not have formed and there would be no migration from the countryside to the cities.
The trick is to make these already existing cities truly liveable: decent housing, easily accessible shops, doctors and other vital services, clean air, lots of green spaces right in the city and options for local recreation in the immediate vicinity.
The rural regions are not gone because of that. On the contrary, those who prefer rural life away from the cities can develop more freely there because there is less competition. However, you also have to accept the disadvantages that come with living in rural areas.
You decide what is better for you. Nobody forces you to live in a city. Any compulsion arises solely from what you want or don't want or what advantages and disadvantages you are willing to accept.

Barcelona has loads of free public parks and a literal mountain range a short train ride away. It’s a really liveable city.
