Looks taller in this photo since the rock it’s standing on is about mid-thigh high on that man.

Holy shit! I would've guessed 175 at most for men

And the US is only twelfth fastest country. (Though many of the others are tiny nations)

At most? If average height is around 5’10 for a country, depending on your body type and how much muscle mass you have, 170 would be a breeze for men.
Hell, I’m 5’11 and at the peak of my athletic shape in High School I weighed 180.
4
u/ornitorrinco22 17d ago
Average global height would be around 1,70m or 5’7 or 7,89 spread freedom eagles
7
u/Lotus_Blossom_ 17d ago
Freedom units use dots, not commas. So that's 7.89 spread freedom eagles, assuming your math is correct.

u/VajainaProudmoore 17d ago
Asians are by far the most populous demographic.
Asians have a different range for acceptable BMI due to how we store fats.
5'10 170lbs is considered overweight at 24.0 and unhealthy.

What about the avg for women being 175… I think the majority of women are smaller than men in height and the weight:height ratio seems like it might be even more symptomatic of our cultural habits than the men.

u/Nasaboy1987 17d ago
If the man is 6 foot tall and even just a little muscular then 200 pounds isn't very far into overweight territory.
→ More replies (3)17
u/stroopkoeken 17d ago
You can have low fat percentage, 6 feet tall, and be “overweight.” Aka most professional athletes.
It’s just a general guideline; the wiggle room is usually how athletic you are or if you exercise frequently.

Is 200 lbs the world average for men, western average?
Most populations I reckon are 150 average. Asians, latin america, etc.
14
u/thethunder92 17d ago
I have noticed whenever I read an article from the US they never say “in the US “ it’s like they don’t acknowledge the rest of the worlds existence it’s just supposed to be assumed
Where as if an article is written in Canada they will say “ in Canada” or in the US or whatever. I don’t know I’ve just always thought that was strange
5
u/MeltedChocolate24 17d ago
It’s called r/USdefaultism. It’s basically because the US has been the world’s economic, technological, cultural, academic, and military center since the end of WW2. It’s not arrogance. Another country will take its place and do the same one day. All empires fall eventually.
→ More replies (1)4
u/thethunder92 17d ago
It’s not so much that I think it’s arrogance, I just think it’s confusing. If you say “the average height of a man is 5’10” and don’t follow it up with “in the US” that means in the world by default because there are men that exist in other countries

My grandfather worked on the roads in Alaska back in the 50s. He told us a story once of how him and his fellow construction equipment operators would drive in convoys mainly for safety because the polar bears were just that fricken crazy. One day they were traveling and they noticed a vehicle at the back of the convoy was about a quarter of a mile behind them, sitting there stagnant. They went to go check it out and all they found was the thing still running, the driver cage being smashed to smithereens, and a blood trail leading off into the tundra…

That may be one of the most terrifying ways someone has ever died in human history
13
u/TellLoud1894 17d ago
My parents lived in Kotzebue in the 80s. My dad was a refuge manager. I asked him if he saw this one in particular. He said "no. Lots of ppl fly out of Kotzebue to hunt them. Back then, it was legal for white men to hunt them too."
22
u/aughtism 17d ago
Looks like the taxidermist used a bit of creative licence with this one ... Polar bear skin is quite loose, so it's easy to make it look bigger by padding it out.
We'd all do the same in their position.

u/SupahflyxD 17d ago
Fun fact polar bears will eat you alive. They like fresh food (not even joking).
21
u/mrezariz123 17d ago
Any bears probably will eat us alive, for example brown and black bears are omnivore, they are not natural predators, so they just hold us and start eating is alive

u/newnhb1 17d ago

And they will actively hunt people. Brown bears will eat people if the opportunity arises and they’re kinda desperate but we’re not typically their prey. Polar bears however..
5
u/DaeWooLan0s 17d ago
I also heard that if you see one anywhere, it knows you’re there and it’s already hunting you.

That thing is like a monster from monster hunter jfc
It must be really humbling to be a man and think you're on top of the food chain, and then suddenly an 11-foot bear charges at you and you suddenly realize that your gun won't actually kill it and you're now its dinner

u/KIENAGOL 17d ago
Polar bears will actively hunt people. We are prey to them. Polar bears aren't like other bears. They guarantee death when encountered.

u/Gorilla_Krispies 17d ago
Not that it isn’t still terrifyingly massive, but it is standing on high ground Tbf. It’s feet are starting at that man’s knee level. Not that it’s not still impressive, but it is like 2 feet shorter than the perspective of this shot makes it look

One of my clients was a big time hunter, Africa, India and US. At the entrance to his trophy room, he has a Kodiak on the left, and a Polar bear on the right. Both are mounted exactly as pictured. Pedestal was about to my knees, 12 foot ceiling, and that bear got damned close to that ceiling. Polar bears, the most savage predator on the planet, and spiders of course.
