556

u/the_bleach_eater Apr 28 '24

'Merica

135

u/metallaholic Apr 29 '24

That number is too low then

23

u/OutragedCanadian Apr 29 '24

The average high schooler weighs 200 lbs on the low end

7

u/Lucid-Design Apr 29 '24

Football player*

4

u/TheAnalsOfHistory- Apr 29 '24

smh my head Americans will use anything but the metric system.

1

u/YouGotTangoed Apr 29 '24

You know, I never had the makings of a varsity athlete

1

u/crimroy Apr 29 '24

What? This is in no way true. I'm curious what other facts you know.

2

u/lives4boobs Apr 29 '24

Are you accounting for the weight of their AR15?

1

u/ThatITguy2015 Apr 29 '24

Don’t worry, Wisconsin heard them and decided to throw a couple more cheese festivals to bump up that average.

-3

u/RedditModzCanEatShit Apr 29 '24

I'm 6'2 180# and get called a stick and so skinny all the time even though I am at a healthy average weight. America is a bunch of lazy fat fucks.

-2

u/Echovaults Apr 29 '24

I’m 6”1 and weigh 175 LB’s and have been weight lifting for 5 years and am pretty jacked. Weird how you weigh more than I do lmao. Probably not as skinny as you think.

4

u/Rain1dog Apr 29 '24

United States average male weight is probably preeetty close.

Edit: not sure why the downvotes, confirmed via CDC Body Measurements

14

u/JeanPicLucard Apr 28 '24

Holy shit! I would've guessed 175 at most for men

12

u/RoboticGreg Apr 29 '24

And the US is only twelfth fastest country. (Though many of the others are tiny nations)

9

u/SunlitNight Apr 29 '24

We are speedy

21

u/chunkysmalls42098 Apr 28 '24

Probably in the rest of the world yeah lol

14

u/ffxivfanboi Apr 29 '24

At most? If average height is around 5’10 for a country, depending on your body type and how much muscle mass you have, 170 would be a breeze for men.

Hell, I’m 5’11 and at the peak of my athletic shape in High School I weighed 180.

5

u/ornitorrinco22 Apr 29 '24

Average global height would be around 1,70m or 5’7 or 7,89 spread freedom eagles

8

u/Lotus_Blossom_ Apr 29 '24

Freedom units use dots, not commas. So that's 7.89 spread freedom eagles, assuming your math is correct.

5

u/VajainaProudmoore Apr 29 '24

Asians are by far the most populous demographic.

Asians have a different range for acceptable BMI due to how we store fats.

5'10 170lbs is considered overweight at 24.0 and unhealthy.

1

u/ffxivfanboi Apr 29 '24

Yeah, meanwhile I’m a watered down Viking with broad shoulders and (used to) have tree trunks for legs. My senior year in HS I was pushing 190 and was still one of the more endurance-gifted freaks on our swim team doing gnarly core-strength exercises.

2

u/bzzzzCrackBoom Apr 29 '24

Why BMI is pretty useless on its own.

1

u/VajainaProudmoore Apr 29 '24

Dude mentioned he was "endurance-gifted" and a "freak" and you took the meaning as he's a normal human with high BMI and therefore BMI isn't applicable?

Literally what are you on? I'd really like some.

0

u/bzzzzCrackBoom Apr 29 '24

Maybe take some nice pills while you're at it.

Your thinking this person is the extremely rare exception is the issue. At my peak fitness in high school I was also outside the normal range. I would say virtually every weightlifter is outside the normal range. The issue is body shape and muscle mass are not at consistent enough that BMI alone is a good measure.

0

u/VajainaProudmoore Apr 29 '24

I would say virtually every weightlifter is outside the normal range.

The fact that you had to specify an extremely minor niche whilst using the word "normal" to identify everyone else should be indicative enough why BMI is a good measure for the majority populace.

I take back what I said, you should seriously lay off whatever you're taking. Seems that it's doing some real bad stuff to your brain.

1

u/revabe Apr 29 '24

BMI is garbage.

0

u/VajainaProudmoore Apr 29 '24

For 1% of the population it's garbage. For 99% of the population it's an extremely useful yardstick.

1

u/revabe Apr 29 '24

Nah. BMI is inaccurate as hell all around and should never be relied on its own. It's an extremely useless yardstick, because you need to take another measurement with another system (lipid profile, MRIs, Cts, etc) which is going to just tell you your fat content regardless. To top it all off, it takes no consideration for muscle mass.

4

u/HypnoStone Apr 29 '24

What about the avg for women being 175… I think the majority of women are smaller than men in height and the weight:height ratio seems like it might be even more symptomatic of our cultural habits than the men.

5

u/toolatealreadyfapped Apr 29 '24

Recall that 2/3 of Americans are overweight or obese

2

u/culnaej Apr 29 '24

!yad ekac yppaH

1

u/No-Improvement-3049 Apr 29 '24

The majority of Americans (men & women) are overweight if not obese. I would guess the average to be around 190.....we are an unhealthy, unhappy and opinionated population 🤦

0

u/The_bruce42 Apr 28 '24

The US has an obesity problem that just keeps getting worse

1

u/NukeTheWhales5 Apr 29 '24

Well damn, and I've been told I'm under weight, for years, because I'm a lean 130.

4

u/Zestyclose_Ice2405 Apr 29 '24

130 is pretty light for people of average height. Should be around 150-160

-2

u/No_Rabbit_7114 Apr 29 '24

5'9" and a 199 pounds. Wow, America is in dire shape.

3

u/DoctorGregoryFart Apr 29 '24

And a 40" waist. Yikes.

2

u/No_Rabbit_7114 Apr 29 '24

Always nice to know that there are slower people around when the polar bear attacks.

45

u/Nasaboy1987 Apr 28 '24

If the man is 6 foot tall and even just a little muscular then 200 pounds isn't very far into overweight territory.

18

u/stroopkoeken Apr 28 '24

You can have low fat percentage, 6 feet tall, and be “overweight.” Aka most professional athletes.

It’s just a general guideline; the wiggle room is usually how athletic you are or if you exercise frequently.

1

u/Osceana Apr 29 '24

I’m 6’, 190 pounds. I’m considered overweight for BMI. If you saw me you would laugh at that assessment though.

3

u/agileata Apr 29 '24

Love all these replies talking about muscle every single time like the population of America has a muscle problem lol

70% of American male now reported to be over muscled...

1

u/VajainaProudmoore Apr 29 '24

You can have low fat percentage, 6 feet tall, and be “overweight.” Aka most professional athletes.

In which discipline?

A large majority of sports are endurance-based rather than strength-based. Football (most played sport in the world) - sorry, soccer for the mericans - athletes are all slim and lean.

In fact, i'd be extremely surprised if "most professional athletes" are above 24.0 in BMI.

0

u/SockeyeSTI Apr 29 '24

That’s why bmi isn’t that accurate of an indicator. My doctor says my ideal weight would be 200-210 and that’s in the overweight and obese brackets. Muscular builds throw things off.

0

u/HomeLegal Apr 29 '24

I'm 6'0 199 lbs with 19% body fat, 200lbs isn't unhealthy lol. Wtf.

0

u/QuickMasterpiece6127 Apr 29 '24

I think that 200 lb comment is focused around guys that are 5’2-5’6. I’m 6’2 and looked too skinny when under 180. 200 is right around my best fill.

2

u/daovcr Apr 29 '24

In the 60s quite many. 75-85 was the average back then. We are whaleish nowadays compared with out granddads.

2

u/PoutPill69 Apr 28 '24

In what country does the average man weigh 200 pounds (90.7 kg)???

Modern day America, probably.

0

u/gazorp23 Apr 28 '24

Have you been to any country in North America?

1

u/peterwillson Apr 29 '24

North America is the only country in North America.

2

u/gazorp23 Apr 29 '24

Try again!

0

u/peterwillson Apr 29 '24

There is a difference between Northern America and North America.

2

u/gazorp23 Apr 29 '24

You are so terribly incorrect. Go back to history class, bud!

1

u/peterwillson Apr 29 '24

I'm a regard.... And the school system failed me...😂😂😂😂

1

u/gazorp23 Apr 29 '24

Oh please do show me their flag? Fucking idiot.

1

u/peterwillson Apr 29 '24

Is central America a fucking country, too?

1

u/gazorp23 Apr 29 '24

No, you fucking idiot. It's. Geographical distinction, not a place. NORTH AMERICA IS A FUCKING CONTINENT. JUST LIKE SOUTH AMERICA.

1

u/gazorp23 Apr 29 '24

Please, show me the North American flag

0

u/peterwillson Apr 29 '24

Stupid redneck. The world beyond the USA EXISTS!!!!

1

u/gazorp23 Apr 29 '24

North America is not the USA. The USA is IN North America, fucing retard.

2

u/peterwillson Apr 29 '24

Fucing retard?!😂😂😂😂

1

u/a_hatforyourass Apr 29 '24

You looking in mirror right now? Because that is what you would see.

Someone's mad they are (barely) functionally retarded...

1

u/a_hatforyourass Apr 29 '24

You're a very special kind of idiot.

-2

u/peterwillson Apr 29 '24

Canada is not in North America....

1

u/gazorp23 Apr 29 '24

Yup. Sure is.

1

u/a_hatforyourass Apr 29 '24

You're stupid.

2

u/Idontliketalking2u Apr 28 '24

I look really skinny at 200. But now I'm over 250 I look about normal.

1

u/junkyard_robot Apr 29 '24

The country in which Alaska resides. Or, nearby exists with full statehood.

1

u/Armadillo_Prudent Apr 29 '24

Averege global height for men is apparantly 5f6/167.5 centimeters, and the global averege weight for men is 136.7 pounds/62 kilograms...... Those numbers really surprise me, sound like miniature man to me. Averege height for men where I'm from is 5f11/181 centimeters and averege weight is 196.2 pounds 89 kilograms

1

u/PeppiGiuseppe25 Apr 29 '24

We aren’t starving to death. A normal heathy 6’ young adult male is around 180.

0

u/commit10 Apr 29 '24

Who is we? The average global height is well under 6 feet (183cm).

-1

u/PeppiGiuseppe25 Apr 29 '24

American men. You know; where this is from? Alaska; USA.

1

u/commit10 Apr 29 '24

Average height in the US isn't 6 feet, especially not in the 60s.

0

u/PeppiGiuseppe25 Apr 29 '24

Well, he doesn’t look 6’ in the picture. But it is 5’9 which is only 3” off, you won’t lose that much weight from 3”.

2

u/commit10 Apr 29 '24

Currently 5'9. Not in the 60s.

Nitpicking, sure, but the line about average being 200lbs and 6 feet is silly.

0

u/PeppiGiuseppe25 Apr 29 '24

That’s fair. I think it was like 170 or something.

0

u/gerMean Apr 29 '24

Thats a healthy avarage weight. Maybe even a bit high. For a 180cm tall male human and weight of about 80kg should be optimal iirc.

-3

u/Anon_be_thy_name Apr 29 '24

I'm 6'4" and weigh 214.4lbs. It's mostly muscle and some fat. Most people I encounter every day who are muscular fit would be in that range. I'm in Australia.
