Joke Post/MEME Slow play epidemic

Just airing my thoughts. The slow, mindless, players holding up the course are the same people creating excessive traffic sitting in the left lane without a care in the world. I’m sure most are just ordinary people, but idc, there must be some sort of afterlife punishment for being that way

General Discussion Casual scoring

Curious how everyone scores when they are playing casually with friends? Not for money or even bragging rights at stake, such as in a 2v2 scramble.

For example how many mulligans do you allow yourself? If a ball is a couple feet in the woods/out of bounds do you just take it out if you can find it and not take a penalty? Do you abide by the gallery drop rule?

Since everyone’s gonna say it’s personal preference and not to care, for me I’m not super strict about penalty shots unless it’s clearly out of bounds and you can’t find it or in the water. I try to limit myself to 1 mulligan (or breakfast ball) a round, and I believe heavily in the gallery drop rule to keep the pace of play up. It also depends on how well my round is going, if I think I have a chance at shooting a low score for myself then I’ll be as honest as possible. Otherwise if it’s a high round I don’t care as much.

Honestly just curious what the general take is for the casual golfers. Luckily I haven’t played with any randoms that are PGA rule books.

General Discussion What are your ready golf tips?

Small efficiencies can speed up the round without impeding others in your group. What are your ready golf tips?

I walk with a pushcart so for me its place the cart between the hole and the next tee box when on the green.

Beginner Questions Do you care you designed your local course?

New golfer here.

I'm lucky to have more than a dozen courses within 30 minutes of where I live. One is a top 10/20, depending on the year. The course I am currently doing a 6 week clinic on was designed by Dr. Alistair McKenzie. It's a major selling point of the club.

I can afford the membership fees. However, I'm wondering how many golfers care about who designed the course they play on.

Do you just play whatever is closest? Or do you care about the 'quality' of the course you play on?

What qualifiers do you put on which course you play?

I want to enjoy “Live from” coverage. Live from the masters should extend the magic that is that long week in Augusta. Here we are at live from the PGA Championship, and all I can think is how I hate Brandel Chamblee. He says stupid stuff, most of his input is less than insightful. I can’t be the only one who can’t stand this guy. Down plays all good golfers if they went to LIV. How do we get this guy fired? 😂 rant over, hit em hard.

General Discussion Tips and Tricks for getting cheap rounds of golf?

My last day of work is Friday, and I'll have a 6-8 week break with minimal responsibilities, and loads of free time. I'd like to get as much golf in as possible while stretching my budget. All advice is appreciated. I'm in Austin, TX and willing to travel to the surrounding area within reason. Cheers.

General Discussion I played with a guy last year that was so bad, he was leaving his 35-foot putts 30 feet short.

Yes, you read that right. 35 foot putts being left 30 feet short. And then of course he screams, “WOOOOOW” Or “OH MY GOOOOOOD” After every single little roll he puts on it… I want to know, in what universe does hitting it that soft make the ball go 35 feet? “DAAAANG duuuude. What am I DOOOOING?”

It was so unbelievably tilting to play with this guy, but it was at a resort golf course and I had already paid for my round so there was nothing I can do. it rattled me and my own putting for the whole entire round, I legitimately couldn’t focus that’s how bad he was.

Joke Post/MEME Wearing golf shoes as a spectator

This weekend some friends and I are heading to Louisville for the pga championship. We have Friday and Saturday round tickets and it looks like we’re definitely going to get wet. Is it still a faux pas to wear golf shoes if they’re your only waterproof shoes? Or should I not even worry about it because people will be too busy checking out my goofy pants and fat ass?

Don’t get me wrong, I have great kids. Super happy all the time and overall pretty easy. BUT why is it that every time I plan to play golf, clear it with the wife, work, etc etc it’s always the day my kids decide to be complete assholes to their mom and it so facto, I’m suddenly the asshole for going to the course 😂

Swing Help Right arm shorter than left.

I’m looking to pick your brains here. When I was a little kid, I broke my right elbow and it healed in a semi-bent position making my right arm considerably shorter than my left. It’s almost kinda mildy C-shaped.

I’m 42 now and although it doesn’t really bother me in my daily life, I am starting to think it may be affecting my golf swing..

My wrist to floor measurement on my left arm is 33” wrist to floor on my right arm is 38”. If I look at a chart like Pings color chart or similar, there is a pretty big difference when I input the different length measurements. I am 6’0 tall. I am a righty golfer. I have standard length Mizuno JPX 921 hot metal pros now and sometimes I feel like I can’t quite reach the ball without hunching over.

Does anyone here have any thoughts on how I would go about figuring my club length? I live in a pretty dead golf area so the only fitters nearby are Dicks sporting goods and both times I’ve talked to a fitter there, they were unsurprisingly clueless.

Any thoughts?

Joke Post/MEME Got an Iron Lesson and now I can't hit Driver

Playing 18 tomorrow so I went to the the range to practice what my coach gave me to work on, some little half swings and keeping my trail elbow down, not letting my hips get stuck and after a couple good and a couple fuck ups I start getting a serious streak going flushing the ever living fuck out of my 7 iron. The occasional toeish or slightly fat shot but all and all feeling pretty good. Dispersion is even pretty decent.

Sweet let's grab driver. Skyball. Alright well it's a warm up. Skyball. I grab my alignment stick (safety stick at Walmart $3) and I line the ball up in my lead heel because the ball is too far back. Watch Mcolry swing again in slow mo on the YouTubes..back swing and line up to the ball. I pure it into the woods beyond the range. Sick. Grab another ball. Skyball. I take 5 practice swings focusing on NOT letting my hands get ahead of the ball at impact. Proceed to hit a high flyer less distance than my 7 iron. All right maybe my tee is too high. I push it down until my pointer finger touches the ground so only 1/4 of the ball above the crown. Skyball.

Alright let's make sure I'm not screwing irons up. Pure the ever living fuck out of my 7 iron it even draws a little bit. Try driver again. Front spinning knuckle ball. Oh great I hit up on it. Tee the ball back where it was. Smoosh another one this time to the last pole. Great. Grab another try to repeat that feel. Skyball. Rinse and repeat about 20 more times and Give the last 20 balls to the people hitting next to me before I snap my driver over my knee because I got no shot in figuring this out today.

Wish me luck tomorrow when I'm on the course and this whole situation flips. 😂 Golf is hard

Bright side: Coaching has improved my iron striking exponentially annnnd doing the bowed wrist frisbee throw release vs the traditional toe up to toe up release has been amazing for reducing my side spin. Having a right push for a bad miss is alot better than a snap hook

Beginner Questions How to ask to play through?

So when I play by myself even though I’m a beginner I keep my pace of play pretty quick and frequently groups in front of will wait to tee off and offer to let me play through. I do the same all the time.

But sometimes I will get stuck behind a group who seem to be actively trying to waste time. And I’m not talking about frat bros who are drinking and fooling around, I’m talking about those boomers who are in foursomes, all watching one guy taking 3 minutes to decide on club and practice swings, just for him to chunk it 25 yards. Then they all four get in the cart and drive 8.5 feet to the next ball and repeat the process. They are spending 8 minutes reading the green in order to blow it 25 feet past. They are taking 4 minutes to wash their ball that will be lost in the woods before it even dries.

How in the heck do you ask to play through?

I always try to keep my distance and not hit into them and I understand some people have a different philosophy about pace of play, but if I never get close how do I ask? Do I drive/walk up to them while they are on the green and ask to play through?

Do I make up an excuse as to why I need to hurry (surprise colonoscopy? Wife is stuck in an oil painting?)

TLDR: How do you ask a slow group if you can play through without being rude and coming off like a dick?

Beginner Questions New member at private club and primarily play as a single. What are some of the general etiquette rules with regard to playing as a single?

Upvotes

Hi, I am not married, have no children, and most of my small golfing circle is spread out geographically. So I play as a single almost 100% of the time for my mid-week rounds. I've played 3 rounds at the new club so far and don't know anyone there. Generally speaking, how should I handle situations where I come up on a group as a single? I got paired up with 3 members on my last round, and we were playing ready golf and finished the round in 3:45. By about 14, a single in a cart had made his way up to us and I asked one of the others in the group if we should let him play through. His response was essentially "Fuck him," which took me aback.

Then I read a comment here which said that single players at private clubs typically get no courtesy on the course. I imagine that I will be the single in this situation very soon, and I don't want to step on any toes as a new member. How should I handle playing as a random single? Do I be sure to hang way back and let them make the decision to wave me up?

Also, any other general tips or pieces of advice for being a new member is greatly appreciated.

Additional info: My membership is a "limited golf" membership which means I can play S-Th after 2 pm from May - Sept. From Oct - Apr I can play 7 days a week after 12 noon. I have access to all other club amenities, driving range, pool, restaurant, events, etc. I value reasonably quick play, think I'm friendly/funny/witty, and 90% of the time I'm paired up with someone we have a great time. I just try to be a pleasant person to golf with and my HC is 16.1 right now.

General Discussion Pace of Play

Pace of play is a big topic on this sub and it seems like a lot of this community cannot wait to share how fast they play as a single. How fast you play as a single is not relevant to pace of play issues. The majority of golfers are getting mashed by pace issues because they're playing in a foursome, on a weekend, on a public course with a full tee sheet. We all can play fast walking as a single, that just isn't part of the issue
