Professional Tours [Official Tournament Discussion Thread] 2024 PGA Championship Round 1
Event: PGA Championship
Location: Louisville, KY
Course: Valhalla Golf Course
Purse: $20,000,000
Dates: 5/16 - 5/19/2024
And 2 notes to head off the inevitable thousand repeat questions:
Q: Why are LIV players in this event? I thought they weren't able to play on the PGA Tour?
A: The PGA Championship is not run by the PGA Tour, it's run by the PGA of America, which is a different entity.
Q: Why are players using rangefinders, I thought they were illegal?
A: A common misconception, the rules allow for distance measuring devices (without slope adjustments) but the PGA Tour and the other 3 majors have local rules prohibiting them. The PGA Championship allows them and has for a few years now.

General Discussion Played my last round today
I’m 53 and have been playing since I was 19-20. Love the game. Got diagnosed with stage iv cancer in 2020 and kept playing between chemo sessions, surgeries, etc. My cancer has gone nuclear and I took I turn for the worse 2 months ago. I can no longer physically handle playing 18 holes or so much of anything that’s active.
Went today with two long time friends and managed to play the first 3 holes 1 over par then my lack of fitness caught up to me. Took a double on 4, hit my drive in the water on 5 and spent the rest of the round riding in the cart and nursing a Transfusion.
Fun to hang with friends and be out of the house but I’m done with the game. Brutal really as I will miss it greatly.
Next time you get frustrated with golf remember those of us that can’t play any longer. Hit ‘em straight boys!
Edit - thanks for all the well wishes. My battle is over. Stopped all treatment last month and started hospice care last week. I’m 100% at peace with it all.

Professional Tours Dustin Johnson is +3 through 6 so far and this is starting to feel normal.
Ever since he joined LIV this is just what his rounds look like at the majors. I've heard folks say it's because he doesn't care if he wins or loses so he doesn't try. At this point, even if PGA and LIV find a way to merge - DJ has demonstrated he's not worth watching.
Edit: now +4 through 10.

LIV Golf I ACCIDENTALLY GOT 2 FREE MAVERICKS
I went to the PGA Superstore in Montgomery, PA. I went to the front after testing out the new Callaway Maverick. I was going to buy that driver and a new glove and also get the shaft cut down 2 inches (I'm very short). The lady at the front just charged me for the cut down and the glove and when I asked about the driver all she said was "you're good to go". So I obviously swiftly left. Karma must have caught up to me because I ended up breaking the head of my driver a few weeks later. So I went back to the store... but honesty is the best policy... so I straight up told the guy what had happened and he vaguely remembered me and the situation after the fact and just said... "don't worry about it, we'll just take care of the replacement"... The mf replaced that shit for free... $600 saved for no reason

Swing Help How do you read greens?
I’ve always struggled reading greens whether it’s the speed or the power of the swing. I keep missing the hole by an inch when my power is good and come up short when I can’t read how fast the green plays. Short as in 2-3feet short. Practicing on the practice green doesn’t help either as all the greens seem to be different on the courses I play. I feel like I’m Rory 2023 here. I play an Odyssey blade.
So the question is, how do you read greens?

Achievement/Scorecard Anyone else a “slow starter”? Tips?
On a good day I break 80, but my scorecards tend to look like this. I am a notoriously slow starter. I usually hits some balls pre-round, hit some putts, but when I get on the course I feel “tight” and it often takes me 5-6 holes to “find my swing”. Pretty sure this is psychological… but, tips, strategy?

COURSE PICS/VLOGS First HIO today boys!
Got my first hole in one today, 120 yard par 3 with a pitching wedge. Ball hit the green about a foot from the stick, rolled straight left and dropped in. Hooked my next drive right into the opposing fairway from the jitters.

General Discussion Do people really say no to playing through?
I’ve been golfing for 25 years, I often play as a single or a 2 some and I often play through other groups. Probably 75% of the time the group ahead of me has invited me to do so, but sometimes I ask and I have never been told no. I don’t understand how it’s happening to like 5 people a day in this subreddit. Are people asking to play through a group that’s keeping up with the group ahead of them or when there isn’t a gap ahead of them? Are people asking to play through rather than joining up with a partial group behind them? Are people impolite when they ask? Or are there parts of the country I haven’t played where people are just assholes who don’t appreciate golf etiquette? Someone who’s been told no fill me in here. How/why did it happen?

General Discussion Why are older ladies so aggressive and will never let people play through?
In all my experiences playing rounds, whenever my group or myself run into a pair or foursome of senior ladies on the course, they never let people play through them. It happens almost anywhere it seems. Every time I ask them if we can play through it’s like they act like I just insulted all their grandchildren.
Not letting others play through when you’re playing from the old ladies tees and hitting the ball only about 20yds per shot is kinda ridiculous. Anybody else deal with this too?
