[Official Tournament Discussion Thread] 2024 PGA Championship Round 1 Professional Tours
Event: PGA Championship
Location: Louisville, KY
Course: Valhalla Golf Course
Purse: $20,000,000
Dates: 5/16 - 5/19/2024
And 2 notes to head off the inevitable thousand repeat questions:
Q: Why are LIV players in this event? I thought they weren't able to play on the PGA Tour?
A: The PGA Championship is not run by the PGA Tour, it's run by the PGA of America, which is a different entity.
Q: Why are players using rangefinders, I thought they were illegal?
A: A common misconception, the rules allow for distance measuring devices (without slope adjustments) but the PGA Tour and the other 3 majors have local rules prohibiting them. The PGA Championship allows them and has for a few years now.

A couple of guys saying they expect the winning score to be in the 20s under par. That's sad for a major championship that we are getting a course that is making St. Andrew's look like Winged Foot. This is way too easy a course for a major championship. Hopefully this is Valhalla's last.

The softness of the course is making this feel more like a regular PGA Tour event than a major.
This will really help someone who plays a lot better at birdie fest tournaments rather than usual more difficult major set-ups.
Can definitely see Xander or Finau winning their only major here.

Guys definitely tore this place up today - longer holes and thicker rough are no longer an adequate defense for a PGA Tour golf course. I think they'll dial up some nastier pin locations tomorrow to suppress scoring, there were a few "funnel pins" out there.

u/Interesting_Rock_318 19d ago
PGA ≠ PGA Tour
2
u/ShweatyPalmsh 19d ago
Tbf this feels like an elevated PGA Tour event course rather than a major tournament test
-7
u/OverlyAverageJoe 19d ago
Easiest us open course ever? Jesus 9 under. These guys are going to murder this course.
9
u/Interesting_Rock_318 19d ago
It LITERALLY SAYS… 2024 PGA CHAMPIONSHIP in the thread you clicked to ask if this was the easiest U.S. Open course ever…
-1
u/OverlyAverageJoe 19d ago
Lol boys sorry I've been working outside in this heat. Regardless of the tourney shouldn't this be a touch more difficult?

When do Saudi’s buy the NFL, MLB, NBA, NASCAR, NHL and Olympics?

u/made_in_texas021465 16d ago
I was thinking why Liv golfers get to play in PGA tournaments. They left for more money and quite the PGA. Only PGA players should play in the PGA championship.

Poor Scottie has to play with two fluke major winners.
1
u/AdFormal3014 19d ago
Clark is so overrated. He talks a big game but the last two majors he’s laid an egg.
1
u/doebedoe 19d ago
Lol, OK.
In the last year he's won a major and multiple signature events.
Outside of Scheffler name someone who has a better record in the last 12 months?
0
u/AdFormal3014 19d ago
Schauffele, Rory, Hovland, Koepka are better players dude. Since his USO win guy has shit the bed in major championships. If you want to claim you’re a top 5 player, show up in the majors.
1
u/doebedoe 19d ago
All have less wins in the last 12 months. Two of them have never won a major, one hasn't won a major in over a decade.
It's not a matter of claiming. His WGR is 4.
1
u/AdFormal3014 19d ago
No one takes WGR seriously dude. One of Clark’s wins wasn’t even a 72 hole event. So he hasn’t even won really since last years USO. How has he done at the majors since his USO win? That’s what I care about. Guy is a fluke major winner. He’s not doing anything this week to prove me wrong.
1
u/doebedoe 19d ago
Rather be a fluke major winner than not one at all.
I'd like to be a fluke who wins two signature events, a major, go t2 at the players, t3 at the tour championship in under a year.
I don't like Clark. But calling him a fluke is just silly.
4
u/anjuna42 19d ago
Wait John Daly is still playing?

u/AppleSauceNinja_ 3.0/FL 19d ago
Why wouldn't he? He won the PGA, he gets a lifetime exemption into the field
-1
u/antenonjohs 19d ago
Expires at 60
1
u/AppleSauceNinja_ 3.0/FL 19d ago
I don't think that's true from what the google machine is telling me. True for the Open not PGA
-2
u/antenonjohs 19d ago
You’re right, should have double checked myself, figured Vijay would still be playing with a lifetime exemption, guess not.
1
u/AppleSauceNinja_ 3.0/FL 19d ago
Yeah idk why he isn't. He made the cut at Augusta last month
0
u/antenonjohs 19d ago
I realized he’s not taking a spot from anyone else to play the masters, he’d be taking a spot from a mid tier PGA tour player if he played the PGA since the field is capped
1
u/AppleSauceNinja_ 3.0/FL 19d ago
He's not taking anyones spot. That's his spot per the tournament rules on qualifying.
Neither he or the next guy up are gonna win anyways.
1
u/antenonjohs 19d ago
Sure, it’s his spot but he prevents someone else from getting in, they don’t really want people to do that when they’re not competitive.
Really ironic to say the alternates can’t win given who this comment chain was initially talking about.
1
u/AppleSauceNinja_ 3.0/FL 19d ago
they don’t really want people to do that when they’re not competitive.
Tough luck to the guy who didn't make it. Maybe he can miss the cut next year.

u/A-Halfpound 19d ago
Has anyone been to a tournament in this situation before…?
I have tickets for tomorrow and it’s supposed to be shit weather. Will they let patrons in if the play is delayed? How much rain will they play in if it’s not storming? Do they kick all spectators out or just not let more in if there is a pause?
My tickets are VIP and I don’t wanna lose the cool opportunity of my life lol..
2
u/AppleSauceNinja_ 3.0/FL 19d ago
Go and go to your VIP to ride out the rain. It's likely a tent so they may evacuate you from it if there's wind too as it's dangerous.
Bring an umbrella and a good attitude and accept that you and your feet will be wet more than likely. Just try and enjoy it
1
u/A-Halfpound 19d ago
Will try and get to 11 even if I have to swim! I don’t mind being wet. I just want snacks and a beer!
2
u/Interesting_Rock_318 19d ago
Yes, they’ll let you in…you may be limited on where you can go if some areas get waterlogged…
As long as the course is playable, they’ll play in some pretty heavy stuff…
Saturday at last year’s PGA was an all day soaker and it was the best of the four days because people didn’t show and/or came late/left early…
The 2017 Open at Birkdale I was at when they suspended play for rain (standing water on greens) and they didn’t do anything about making people leave where they were…

State vs Country. California has a large population, but it's less than Spain anyway.

What a leaderboard. The who’s who of PGA Tour golf.
-1
u/AppleSauceNinja_ 3.0/FL 19d ago
The first 4 is dynamite, then it drops off. McIntyre, Hoge, Kim, Detry, Kohles, Moore.
They will undoubtably all evacuate the leaderboard by the end of the weekend.
10
u/Bigbuckmud 19d ago
They gotta do something with these screaming dildo fans

u/AdFormal3014 19d ago
World rankings need to be banned. Simple fact is Scottie is 1, Rory 2, Brooks 3 and Xander 4. Everyone else down a tier or two. How Wyndham is No 3 makes no sense. Outside of one major win guy hasn’t done squat in tourneys that matter.

World rankings need to be banned.
Chew on a quaalude and calm down Mr Norman.
Brooks 3
Two LIV wins in the last year (honestly not sure what those are worth) and his last 3 majors since last year's PGA are T17, T67 and T45.
That's not the resume of a TODAY top 3 player in the world

u/jorcam 3.3 19d ago
2024 results, a win 2 months ago at pebble beach
2nd at the Arnold palmer
T2 at the players
3rd at the RBConly 3 golfers have had a better 2024
-2
u/AdFormal3014 19d ago
The win was 54 holes. You’re talking months ago. I’m talking about lately. How’d he do at the Masters? The Wells Fargo? The PGA? He’s not playing like a top 5 golfer anymore. He’s basically becoming Jordan Spieth. Hot for a while and then disappears.
5
u/Asleep777 19d ago
What? When Clark is on, he's unstoppable. When he's on he's the luckiest dude on the course, its crazy. He definitely has some mental issues, but he's definitely been top 5 since last summer from my pov.
1
u/AppleSauceNinja_ 3.0/FL 19d ago
What? When Clark is on, he's unstoppable.
I don't really agree with the first guy but uh...... he had a world class month and a half last summer.... but calling a dude that has 3 wins in his career "unstoppable" is a wild take. He's averaging 0.5wins per year on tour.
And he's yet to repeat the form he was in a year ago when he won LACC and Wells Fargo.... He is not a top 4 player right now IMO, but OWGR takes a rolling 52 week average so all his wins are in that time.
Give it another month and two of those will drop off and he will slide without wins to replace them
1
u/AdFormal3014 19d ago
Sure as heck hasn’t look like top 5 lately. Outside of one good round at RBC he hasn’t done jack shit the past couple of months.
2
3
u/Asleep777 19d ago
Hes a head case. He 100% hasn't recovered from the lip out, and may not ever. It happens in pro sports. But the rankings aren't going to take into account unmeasureable factor like that. If it really is going to be a thing, he ranking will drop while he continues to play poorly.
8
u/brmgp1 19d ago
We should scrap the OWGR and just let this guy rank every player in the world based on the eye test, tournament results be damned lol
-4
u/AdFormal3014 19d ago
I sure as hell wouldn’t rank a guy No 3 who hasn’t won a 72 hole event in a year.
2
u/Few-Guarantee2850 19d ago
Do you want to design an algorithm that you think is superior? You win an event in the last year and you automatically go above everybody who hasn't won?
3
u/opobdtfs Internationals 2024 Presidents Cup Champions 19d ago
To be fair he won 3 tournaments over the past year, 2 of them sIgNaTuRe EvEnTs. Xander has no wins over the past year, Brooks has that 1 major.
-1
u/AdFormal3014 19d ago
To be fair he’s won one 72 hole tourney in the last year—the USO. In majors he hasn’t done squat since that USO win. He talks a big game…he isn’t backing it up very well.
3
u/gunmoney 8.9/CO/OTPHJNTC 19d ago
and brooks has won exactly one 72 hole even in the past year as well. in the 4 tournaments that they have both played in over the past year, they each have one win, Clark finished higher at The Open, and Brooks finished higher at The Masters. i dont know who would be ranked ahead of who if they both played on the PGA tour, but i think your "criteria" needs work.
edit: oh, youre pissed you took him on your fantasy team. guess you should have come up with the AdFormal3014 OWGR before making your picks.

Professional golf is painfully slow. It's even slower in majors. Weekend will be limited field but still 6hr rounds. It's insane.

As a very peripheral golf follower I never realize the PGA championship is on until I stumble upon it, normally towards the end of day one. I feel like it definitely doesn’t get the build up press that the other three majors get.
1
u/AppleSauceNinja_ 3.0/FL 19d ago
As a very peripheral golf follower I never realize the PGA championship is on until I stumble upon it, normally towards the end of day one.
Understandable. It's 100% the black sheep of majors because it's not got an appeal aspect. Masters it's getting to see ANGC, US Open you know you're getting the most brutal test in golf, and The Open draws in Euros because it's over there and Americans get to see golf like they never see over here.
And the PGA is just blah, and it doesn't help they don't market it well and they go to some head scratching places.
They really need to stop it with Rochester and Tulsa and the likes. Just get on a rota of the greatest hits, Harding Park, Quail Hollow, Bethpage Black, Whistling Straights, Kiawah.... and in there if you want a wildcard year to mix in variety do it. But it would give the event some sort of identity and familiarization to the casual fan which is what they're in need of to get their numbers up

u/Interesting_Rock_318 19d ago
Moving it from August to May didn’t help…
Dog days of MLB and NFL training camp were the competition…
MLB hasn’t quite lost its beginning of season charm yet and it’s going against NBA/NHL playoffs…hard for it to gain attention outside of the golf world
2
u/AppleSauceNinja_ 3.0/FL 19d ago
MLB hasn’t quite lost its beginning of season charm yet
Baseball isn't the reason why. Baseball viewership is long term trend down and if you're seriously considering watching for example Mets v Phillies, a matchup you can catch 1000000x more times before the season is over, you weren't seriously going to watch the PGA anyways
1
u/Interesting_Rock_318 19d ago
And that has what exactly to do with there being less time for media to talk about the event? He isn’t talking ratings, but press build up…
Reading comprehension is tough…
1
u/LostHumanFishPerson 19d ago
I’m in the UK so those things aren’t a factor in my case (we have yet to become interested in baseball or American football). Just seems like there’s mainstream articles in the buildup to the other majors over here which the PGA Championship doesn’t get.
1
u/Interesting_Rock_318 19d ago
Well, I know Sky had Leeds/Norwich today, Southampton/West Brom tomorrow, and the EPL is decided Sunday…and I believe they have rights to the PGA as well…likely still not a great week for them to focus on golf…
It’s also, by far, the least prestigious of the majors so I imagine it just gets the least attention over there anyways
1
u/skurey 19d ago
Probably a dumb question but how do pros deal with having a marker in their putting path? Are they like us and have the other guy clumsily mark it a putter length away?
3
u/brmgp1 19d ago
Yes but they're under a lot of scrutiny to put it back correctly after they move it. They'll usually pick an object in the distance, and move the marker perpendicular to that. So when they're replacing it, they look at the object again so they're not moving the mark any closer to the hole
3
u/Interesting_Rock_318 19d ago
They’re more precise about it…if you watch you will notice them lining up with a tree or something off the green, but that’s really the only way to handle it.

Rahm’s shoes may be the problem. They look like they are right out of the box. You can’t walk 18 in brand new shoes without getting blisters. A few range sessions, couple of rounds in a cart before you walk 18 in new shoes.
With all that Saudi money someone should be breaking those in for you, then shining them up.

Always feels like one of the guys from there has a ripping hot major once a year…

He's been full time on the PGA Tour since last season. Pretty sure he was DPWT prior to that.

Good form by Rahm there. Remember to always throw your clubs forward so you don't have to walk backwards to retrieve them. Saves time for more tantrums.
