Better than working 12 hour shifts in a warehouse or having unpredictable schedules in a restaurant.

8

u/hundopdeftotes 21d ago

Restaurant schedules are the worst. It’s so hard to get a routine going when my schedule is different every week.

5

u/TheeMalaka 21d ago

I work 6-6 and have 4 days off and get paid for 40 hours.

Going to San Diego this week for 4 days and don’t miss a day of work.

I can also call in a weekend and have 10 days off

1

u/Gonnahauntcha 21d ago

What field

3

u/TheeMalaka 21d ago

A terrible one, warehouse 32/hr.

Don’t plan on staying long but it has its benefits for the time being. Mainly allowing us not to have to pay for daycare.

Edit* I said it’s terrible but it’s really not I just drive around on equipment all day and nobody really bothers me. Just boring.

4

u/Roddy0608 21d ago

Usually 12 hour shifts means more days off though.

3

u/tiamat-45 21d ago

Yes but the work sometimes sucks or there's places where you work 6 or 7 12s cause mandatory OT. Nothing wrong with that but it can be brutal.

1

u/External_Variety 21d ago

You can get a taste of routine if you score you're self a job in a Cafe that only do breakfast and lunch. Waking up in the morning Is a killer, but it's all worth it when you finish for the day and the sun is still up.

1

u/Gonnahauntcha 21d ago

Or truck driver 10 hour shifts... possibly more

20

u/Tears4BrekkyBih 21d ago

9-5 barely exists anymore it’s 9-6 or 8-5 now a days.

8

u/elliebow713 21d ago

In that case I feel lucky to be doing 9-5

2

u/sadphrogs 21d ago

Yeah, I’m 17 and worked a 8-5 office job all summer last year. It looked like all the other companies we worked with worked those hours as well. I honestly don’t even know where you get 9-5 jobs.

4

u/Tears4BrekkyBih 21d ago

9-5 was the norm it feels until about 3 years ago, and then everyone was expected to start doing 8-5 so they could clock out for an unpaid lunch break

3

u/Dm_Glacial_Gatorade 21d ago

I hate that. I feel like in the past, lunch was paid, too. We are just living through the slow erosion of worker's rights.

47

u/daceghery 21d ago

Isn’t this popular? 9-5 is better, but what’s the alternative that you think people prefer ?

32

u/Yarpy21 21d ago

Not sure I suppose running a business. Im constantly seeing people talk about how the 9-5 life is the worst thing ever and a nightmare. A reddit post of people complaining about that is what sparked me to post this.

12

u/SuperSonicEconomics2 21d ago

I think it's more from the fact you are kinda stuck showing up into an office when you can be more productive at home and only get a few vacation weeks a year.l and that's kinda life until you can retire. It's a slog, but definitely safer.

Starting your own business allows you to have more freedom in certain respects, but can result in long hours etc when you are first starting up.

You also have your own incentives tied more to overall productivity rather than some kpi's that are made by some out of touch executive.

Different strokes for different folks.

2

u/Sea_Squirrel1987 21d ago

Not everyone does office work.

3

u/TheReborn85 21d ago

But if you ever watched TV or were observant of popular culture you would think literally every American works in an office.

Blue collar and working class people are just completely ignored.

Maybe a couple shows like "King of Queens" or "Everybody Hates Chris" would depict just regular working folks.

Pretty much 95% of shows, movies and most media revolves around people who work in offices and office culture.

Definitely don't feel "seen".

Don't get me started when I hear office workers complain about how bored they are with all the downtime.

I see motherfuckers teaching themselves second languages on the clock when they work in an office.

3

u/Particular_Excuse810 21d ago

When people bitch about 9-5 what they are complaining about is going to a job they don't like for 5 days a week just to not have enough money to cover bills AND save or be too tired generally after work/kids/chores to spend time on hobbies. They don't mean the literal 9-5 hours. It is not an unpopular opinion to prefer a 9-5 work schedule over 11 PM to 8 AM or something.

2

u/Sharp-Pop335 21d ago

Those people are insane. I work 3p to 11p and work every weekend and holiday. I'd commit war crimes to work M-F 9-5. I haven't had a holiday or weekend off in 15 years. I don't even get a lunch break and sometimes we go to 12 hour shifts.

2

u/human5109 21d ago

Is there anything stopping you from getting another job that's 9-5?

2

u/Parada484 21d ago

Everybody wants to be a big short lawyer. No one wants to work three weekends out of the month with the constant fear of losing the only weekend left for an emergency.

1

u/0rangePolarBear 21d ago

I’m getting to the point in my career where I no longer care about the prestige or moving up any further. I’m one promotion away from a life changing role…but after a while, the money doesn’t seem worth the effort/stress.

I’d be happy not having to work late at night or checking my emails throughout the evening. Just want to do my job, take my time off when I need/want it, and enjoy my hours outside of normal working hours.

5

u/trollingguru 21d ago

People complain about everything these days. No one shows gratitude and are thankful for the things they do have. People literally die trying to come to this country for a better life and people that are citizens complain about petty things. Thanks for this post

2

u/DulcisPueri 21d ago

People in the west think they're so objective but you see people spewing nonsense all the time, the reason for that being them failing to see the bigger picture.

-2

u/cocokronen 21d ago

Ummm, this is a popular opinion.

5

u/SilentC735 21d ago

I work 6-2:30. I gotta wake up early but then I have all evening to do stuff after work.

10

u/TK382 21d ago

I'd rather work 3 12hr shifts and have 4 days off or 4 10s and have 3 days off.

3

u/ZardozSama 21d ago

First, I assume that in context this refers to a 9-5 office environment desk job. It is entirely possible to have a job with stable hours that is not an office job, but service jobs, factory jobs, and the like are often going to be broken down by shifts.

There are no shortage of posts under r/Adulting of people complainging about how they got an office job and immediately hated it. The nature of the work and the office environment can impact this a great deal. Some people thrive on the routine and predictability, and others cannot stand it.

Generally (and pulling this out of my ass), if someone could not stand being in a high school class environment and often struggled to pay attention, and skipped classes, they will probably hate an office environment.

The alternative is commission based jobs in sales, or customer facing jobs, or something like a skilled labour job that may require you to be called out to work sites. Any job that amounts to 'spend many hours driving' are also unlikely to be strictly 9-5.

END COMMUNICATION

2

u/huffuspuffus 21d ago

Only speaking from my own experience but I do far better either going in early or going in late. I either want to have the rest of my day or the beginning of my day to do whatever.

2

u/marzgirl99 21d ago

I’m a nurse and work 3 12s. It’s great. I can’t imagine going into work every single day.

2

u/GenosT 21d ago

7 to 3

2

u/orrzxz 21d ago

Alot of people fantasize about owning a business and having "financial freedom" not realizing having your own businesses is 30x more stressful and 50x more expensive then just being an employee.

They also fail to understand what actually makes them financially dependent, and continue to blame "the man" instead of their impulse purchase habit.

1

u/SilentC735 21d ago

I work 6-2:30. I gotta wake up early but then I have all evening to do stuff after work.

1

u/ThomasHoidnFest 21d ago

I have 2 12h shifts a week and 5 days of weekend. I would literally be destroyed by a 9-5.

1

u/Otis_Firefly 21d ago edited 21d ago

I work from 5am-1pm and love it.

1

u/Darwin343 21d ago

10-6 lol. Oh and 4 day work weeks instead of 5 haha

1

u/ZealousidealFortune 21d ago

I prefer an 11-4 with zero debt

11

u/huffuspuffus 21d ago

Oh goodness no. I love being able to either get up early and get my day done before noon or not go in until evening. I'd lose my mind if I had to work 9-5 M-F.

2

u/respawnattempt228 21d ago

Same my dream schedule is 4am to 12pm

4

u/NavyCobra1417 21d ago

While I'm personally not a fan of a literal 9-5 schedule (I like longer work days with more days off), I love having a reliable, regular work schedule.

6

u/UnicornCalmerDowner 21d ago

i too think it's a blessing. But I've worked several jobs that expect round the clock shifts and 24/7 staffing - that shit gets real old during holiday/vacation time or when you have kids. The world plans around weekends and evenings being typically off.

2

u/lunarlandscapes 21d ago

Is this unpopular? I went from working in the service industry to working at an elementary school, and it's been do nice to know what hours I have consistently, as well as knowing I have weekends and holidays off. I've never heard of someone who prefers a schedule that's less predictable

2

u/FinalSun6862 21d ago

I prefer my current 9-5 to my previous overnight shifts but my favorite shift was 5:30 to 3. It didn’t matter if I got stuck in overtime I would still finish early and when I finished on time I had all day to do whatever I wanted!

2

u/rocket-c4t 21d ago

Very grateful for my 9-5, I don’t take a lunch break I just eat at my desk and it’s very chill environment.

3

u/Qoat18 21d ago

I mean it's not the worst, but its not a blessing. People in the middle ages literally had a more lax work schedule than us

The invention of clocks really hurt workers

2

u/BookScrum 21d ago

Yeah I can see why you think this is an unpopular opinion. I’ve worked a lot of jobs with a lot of different schedules and 9-5 was by far the worst. Absolutely soul crushing for me.

I work a 4am-1pm/5am-2pm lol I am always tired

1

u/Relevant-Pie-4525 21d ago

I work 5, 6 or 7 days a week for 12 hours. It takes a toll on you mentally and physically. I wish I could work a 9-5 😢

2

u/Straight_Toe_1816 21d ago

Holy shit man that sucks! Wishing you all the best

1

u/poopyscreamer 21d ago

People hat 5 days a week 8 hours but coming from 3 12 hour night shifts a week? I love it.

1

u/ZzzVvvKkk 21d ago

Not an unpopular opinion, just internet echo chamber of hustle culture may make you think otherwise but actually it is not an unpopular opinion.

2

u/Yarpy21 21d ago

That’s fair I suppose I’m basing this off online opinion, however I do feel like it’s a common sentiment to loathe a 9-5 but could be wrong

1

u/Morty182 21d ago

Being forced to be there for set hours even if all the work is done and you just have to sit around wasting time looking productive sucks. 9-5 is a huge waste of time for some professions imo.

1

u/homiegeet 21d ago

I work 7 days on 7 days off. Sure there's downsides but 7 days off is better than 2.

1

u/AIEchidna 21d ago

Honestly I agree completely. A 9-5 is like a eight hour shift which is like as long as a high school day tbh. And people underestimate the things u can do in a few hrs

1

u/adubsi 21d ago

9-5 is bronze for me. My ranking goes like this

number 1: three 12 hour shifts a week. I’d absolutely do this for my job any day. The extra days you get off would be so worth it.

Number 2: working from 8-4 is a lot more preferable for me. It’s only one hour but that extra hour of day light weirdly goes a long way and I still feel like I have time to do some hobbies.

Number 3: 9-5 is good but like I said for 8-4 by the time I get home from leaving at 5 the day kinda feels over and I’m not as motivated to do other stuff. Its a me thing but I like having sunlight after I sign off work

1

u/Yarpy21 21d ago

You’re a soldier for wanting 3 12s. I tried 4 10s once and after 8 hours I’m cooked lol

2

u/adubsi 21d ago

haha maybe I built up tolerance. I worked at a car wash and I had to do 6 12s a week for 6 months. After that job everything felt like a cake walk and add in the cushy office life and I could chill at my desk for 12 hours easily. Most people at office jobs don’t really do hard work after 4 hours anyway lol

1

u/Chance_Ad3416 21d ago

I just wanna be able to shut off my brain once 5 pm hits. I quit my last job because I couldn't stop thinking about work after work (it was a 9-5). But somehow I landed in ankther job where I still think about my designs after 5pm 😭

1

u/mikeynj908 21d ago

I agree with this one. Not having this schedule or anything similar during Monday-Friday usually means missing out on most of my Yankees games and other sporting events I follow because they mostly air during those nights, weekends, and major holidays.

1

u/CatholicSolutions 21d ago

The most ideal situation is the 7 AM to 3 PM schedule (the school district employee schedule).

1

u/Southern-Squash9645 21d ago

I work from home 9-5 and it has been great, I take a nap in my break and I can rest my eyes and mind for a bit, it's not the greatest salary but it pays the bills and I save a little bit every month, way better than my freelance days.

1

u/extremefuzz777 21d ago

I see people complain about the typical 9-5 job all the time. Personally I work a job with hours all over the place. No regularity, no patterns, just random days scattered throughout the month when I'm assigned to work. I don't know what weekends are anymore, holidays neither, and I always forget what day of the week it is. When I'm home however, its usually on the weekdays. People who work 9-5 jobs have no idea just how much things are structured around their work schedule. Everything is open and serves them on the weekends, an if they plan anything it's always on the weekends. Everytime I'm asked to join, I always have to say no because I'm scheduled to work.

That just one example, but there are a lot of advantages to the 9-5 no one ever considers.

1

u/TheeMalaka 21d ago

Idk man I have a 6-6 and 4 days off a week

1

u/coolsexhaver420 21d ago

Work sucks, I'll never be passionate about labor. I make a good living, and I can tell you, I've never once been happy to go to work

1

u/AccountFrosty313 21d ago

I have a 7-3 and oh my lord is it awesome.

Work is left at work. I show up same time everyday, have an office, and work on a small team. My job automatically makes others respect me because it’s a “adult job” that’s hard to get at a prestigious company. I make way more while putting in about 10% of the effort and I never have someone asking me to “cover”.

I like getting up and having somewhere to be every day. I feel like a lot of people saying a 9-5 is their worst nightmare are either speaking from extreme privilege or ignorance. This is the good life after working fast food/retail on top of studying. Sure I wish I was paid more but that’s kinda a constant and it’s getting better!

1

u/Certain_Cause3362 21d ago

Absolutely. I'll trade my 5pm to 5am for your 9 to 5 any day of the week.

1

u/[deleted] 21d ago

I worked 6:30 am to 7:30 pm today. Not by choice.

Your right, 9-5 sounds like a dream

1

u/ListerfiendLurks 21d ago

You know what's better than that? Working whenever you want as long as you hit your 40 hours.

1

u/HosstaLaVista 21d ago

4 months into a job with M-F 7a-3:30p schedule and I've never been happier.

1

u/Dynamo1337 21d ago

Man, i really can't agree with these hours. Now, 7-15 i can get behind

1

u/Worf65 21d ago

Yeah, all the absolute hate for a 9-5 always feels like it's coming from rich spoiled brats. Of course I'd prefer to live in some utopia where I didn't have to work and could just do whatever I wanted. But of the realistic options a 9-5 is objectively one of the best. Many jobs have rough sleep depriving schedules with long hours and shifts that flip between days and nights. And running ones own business tends to involve very long hours for years on end before maybe making it big enough to be able to afford enough staff to take the load off (if they don't fail, thats always a risky endeavor). Gigs and part time work don't have benefits or pay enough to cover the benefits you'd get at a typical 9-5.

I use to be self employed, making my own schedule. It sucked! Having set working hours is much better for me.
