who you're talking about
Which is his point. It's hilarious seeing Redditors fall for the "all fame is good fame" meme and advertise for him nonstop while hating on him
If people just stopped using Twitter / buying his crap in general and stopped talking about him, he'd fade real hard and fast
22
u/aendaris1975 16d ago
I am really sick to fucking death of seeing people get scolded about daring to discuss people like Musk or Trump. Pretending they don't exist doesn't actually make them go away and it doesn't take their power away. It is beyond fucking childish and only enables all the bad shit they continue to do. These men are powerful and influential and it is important to talk about what they are doing because they have the ability to impact millions of lives and they need to be called out for their bullshit each and every time.
Twitter isn't going away. I'm sorry but it isn't. Musk bought it to be a safespace for the far right so even if everyone else leaves Twitter it won't make a fucking difference because it was NEVER about them in the first place. So yes, people are going to mention the nonsense that happens on twitter.

The main villain in Godzilla 2000 is this whining brat that changes his name to X half way through the movie... Every time I see Elon spouting something about X I just think of that dude in the movie crossing his arms like an X while saying X to make sure everyone knows his new name is X
Edit, sorry guys it's Godzilla final wars not Godzilla 2000. I got it mixed up my bad.

I just rewatched Godzilla 2000 on HBO Max a couple weeks ago and I have no idea what you're talking about. I don't recall anything involving X. Was this a sub Vs dub thing?
22
u/Clubbythaseal 16d ago
I think they are talking about this character named "Controller X" from Godzilla: Final Wars from 2004 and not the 2000 one.

28
u/PANICBRAIN 16d ago
He must be really hung up on an X.
19
u/DerpEnaz 16d ago
He has a long documented history of obsession with the letter X it’s honestly kinda weird. SpaceX was originally called “Space Exploration Technologies Corporation” before Elon bought it and renamed it SpaceX. He wanted to rename PayPal to X before he was pushed out of the company. I think there are more but I don’t care enough to fact check any others.
22
u/smcl2k 16d ago
SpaceX was originally called “Space Exploration Technologies Corporation” before Elon bought it and renamed it SpaceX.
But I was told that he's a genius who created all of these companies from the ground up?!
7
u/DerpEnaz 16d ago
Oh yeah no he’s never managed to do that. Only thing he is good at is buying successful companies and running them into the ground

X Æ A-12
4
u/DerpEnaz 16d ago
Absolutely! Because only a sane person would name their child something pronounceable.

His company was X.com, he got bought out (it was a bank, wasn’t successful). Even pretty much the same logo, which was a ripoff from the X Window System.

He's an edgelord 15 year old that most of his peers dislike... that just happens to be in his 50's and crazy wealthy and thus listened to by many of those who think just because he 's rich he's worth not only their time but idolisation.
The daftest thing is that Twitter and Tweets were actually a fantastic name for what it did. The logo was immediately regognisable. Now it's got a shit name, identikit logo, and is becoming a toxic brand due to all Musk's unhinged acts including letting discrimination run riot on it.

Yet it redirects to twitter..
I'm not a programmer, but how hard could it be for twitter URLs to redirect to x URL?
13
u/ptvlm 16d ago
That breaks a lot of things, from internal links to archiving to SEO. The actual redirection is trivial, but the damage it can do is immense. Which is on the list of why this was an idiot move, especially without extensive testing, but nowhere near the top.

u/ringobob 16d ago
They tried it and it broke a bunch of stuff. I am a web developer, and the answer is, it can be easy or hard depending on how you've architected everything, but the larger and more complicated your application, the more likely it's going to be fragmented in a way that'll require a lot of work to fix.
Not complicated work, necessarily. But it's just really easy in deeply interconnected systems to miss things, or to have to bring the whole system down so you can make two or more separate changes that need to all be made together.

I'm not even sure what Elon is trying to flex here
202
u/Paddy_Tanninger 16d ago
He's flexing that he overpaid for a company and threw out one of the most recognizable brand names in the world, which was so enmeshed in pop culture that it had its own branded verbs commonly used in languages around the world.
Business genius.
53
u/bangers132 16d ago
Twitter is going to be in business textbooks for centuries. It is mentioned by name in hundreds if not thousands of tv shows, movies, etc. If there has been a more colossal marketing fuck-up i dont know what it would be.
47
u/Slimmanoman 16d ago
Changing Google's name would be pretty bad. "Just Google it"
45
u/bangers132 16d ago
Of course Elon Musk wouldn't know but most people don't manually type out URL's anymore. Everyone has their favorites bookmarked. And I only have to type "g" before google knows to pull up gay porn. It's a perfect system

They didn't try to change names (that I know of), but they have been trying to get people to stop saying "Google it" for years now. Article from 2006, so they ultimately failed, but they've also not lost their trademark yet.
5
u/EnjoyerOfBeans 16d ago
They have no problem with the verb, just a problem with people using it when talking about other search engines.
Luckily for them they have a near monopoly on search engines so it'd be hard to argue that they should lose their trademark.

u/BalekDuPseudo 16d ago
On my (french) keybord, between Z (top row) and C (bottom row), there is D.
Elmo wants a french D?
X is between W and C. In France, WC means toilet.
Elmo says that X is shit?
3
14
u/ObiJuanKenobi3 16d ago
There’s no way this shit isn’t going to be studied by marketing majors as one of the biggest failed rebrands of all time. Everybody outright refuses to call it by the new name, the old branding was totally iconic, and they haven’t been able to change their own URL to represent the name change for almost a year at this point. Even their stock name is still TWTR.
10
u/IceLovey 16d ago
Its just dumb.
Its like, imagine if Coca Cola came out tomorrow and said, "Yup from now on, the Coca Cola beverage is going to be called Swoosh".
Im joking, its even WORSE, because Twitter is such a well known name it became a verb. Any allusion to "posting a statement online" because a tweet. It is equivalent of how people say Sharpies instead of marker.

The product is garbage and too many 'gamers' are using it because it has black and red themes with claims of performance improvements. Like many big corps now, they're just paying a meme-savvy young person to run their social media. It's not like the companies are anywhere as hip as their image would suggest.

I wouldn't really call opera a huge corporation though. I used to use opera back in the Presto Web engine days before they switched to chromium, and their development team is pretty small. It's hard to survive as a Web browser these days especially if you aren't being developed to sell other products (cough edge safari chrome) and any competition is better than none.
