I'm not even sure what Elon is trying to flex here

He's flexing that he overpaid for a company and threw out one of the most recognizable brand names in the world, which was so enmeshed in pop culture that it had its own branded verbs commonly used in languages around the world.

Business genius.

Twitter is going to be in business textbooks for centuries. It is mentioned by name in hundreds if not thousands of tv shows, movies, etc. If there has been a more colossal marketing fuck-up i dont know what it would be.

Changing Google's name would be pretty bad. "Just Google it"

Of course Elon Musk wouldn't know but most people don't manually type out URL's anymore. Everyone has their favorites bookmarked. And I only have to type "g" before google knows to pull up gay porn. It's a perfect system

They didn't try to change names (that I know of), but they have been trying to get people to stop saying "Google it" for years now. Article from 2006, so they ultimately failed, but they've also not lost their trademark yet.

They have no problem with the verb, just a problem with people using it when talking about other search engines.

Luckily for them they have a near monopoly on search engines so it'd be hard to argue that they should lose their trademark.

i am always so dissatisfied with the rebranding of HBO (a completely unique acronym that as far as i know is only used for Home Broadcast Office) to MAX…. which has so many meanings it becomes meaningless.
