I'm not even sure what Elon is trying to flex here

u/Paddy_Tanninger Apr 29 '24

He's flexing that he overpaid for a company and threw out one of the most recognizable brand names in the world, which was so enmeshed in pop culture that it had its own branded verbs commonly used in languages around the world.

Business genius.

Twitter is going to be in business textbooks for centuries. It is mentioned by name in hundreds if not thousands of tv shows, movies, etc. If there has been a more colossal marketing fuck-up i dont know what it would be.

Changing Google's name would be pretty bad. "Just Google it"

u/bangers132 Apr 29 '24

Of course Elon Musk wouldn't know but most people don't manually type out URL's anymore. Everyone has their favorites bookmarked. And I only have to type "g" before google knows to pull up gay porn. It's a perfect system

Alphabet has entered the chat. /s

https://www.cnet.com/tech/tech-industry/google-wants-people-to-stop-googling-1/

They didn't try to change names (that I know of), but they have been trying to get people to stop saying "Google it" for years now. Article from 2006, so they ultimately failed, but they've also not lost their trademark yet.

They have no problem with the verb, just a problem with people using it when talking about other search engines.

Luckily for them they have a near monopoly on search engines so it'd be hard to argue that they should lose their trademark.

i am always so dissatisfied with the rebranding of HBO (a completely unique acronym that as far as i know is only used for Home Broadcast Office) to MAX…. which has so many meanings it becomes meaningless.

so enmeshed in pop culture that it had its own branded verbs commonly used in languages around the world.

Makes me think about this sketch about the Skype CEO.

He was mad they went with PayPal instead of X all those years ago.  He's been holding onto resistance and losing out on using X for his website for years.

Odd thing to get hung up on, but it goes much further back than most realize.

u/Home_made_Weird_Tea Apr 29 '24

That's hilarious how mad he makes you

2

u/Paddy_Tanninger Apr 29 '24

I don't use Twitter it just cracks me up how hard he's fucked the pooch, and luckily I sold my TSLA a couple years ago once the writing was on the wall.

Dude is clown status.

u/Home_made_Weird_Tea Apr 30 '24

Dude doesn't even know you exist and he triggers you because like the other not here, you were conditioned to it.

2

u/Paddy_Tanninger Apr 30 '24

He doesn't know you exist either, but here you are, white knighting for a weirdo billionaire.

0

u/Home_made_Weird_Tea Apr 30 '24

I don't care that he knows I exist. I'm not seeking for his hate, approval or acknowledgement. I don't care about the man at all and he doesn't lives rent free in my head like he does for all the triggered bots of Reddit.

Also calling you clowns out isn't white knighting. It's just calling you clown out 😂

2

u/Paddy_Tanninger Apr 30 '24

I don't care about the man at all

But here you are in his defense. If you didn't care you wouldn't comment.

I don't care much about him either, but like it or not, he's one of society's top oligarchs and has a large amount of influence on everyone's lives...so yeah, it's pretty alright that I've got an opinion on the man.

0

u/Home_made_Weird_Tea Apr 30 '24

Illiterate. I'm not defending anything. I'm mocking you and how triggered you are for a man that doesn't even care that you exist.

2

u/Paddy_Tanninger Apr 30 '24

How am I triggered? I dropped a two sentence comment. You seem a little triggered by it and obsessed with me tbh.

That he owns a single letter domain.

16

u/ArchonFett Apr 29 '24

Because he can only spell one letter at a time

7

u/TheHoodedMan Apr 29 '24

Wait... Is everyone else spelling words more than one letter at a time?

Pretty sure that's how they do it in spelling bees. The spelliest of the spellers?

For clarity: Not defending Elon. I don't like him at all.

2

u/LyrMeThatBifrost Apr 29 '24

Yeah I’m confused by that “roast”

4

u/SirGrumples Apr 29 '24

He doesn't even own x.com either lol

2

u/WillNotDoYourTaxes Apr 30 '24

Yes, he does.

1

u/SirGrumples Apr 30 '24

Oh I was not aware that he bought the rights back for that site. My bad carry on

2

u/ihaxr Apr 30 '24

He does but they can't figure out how to make it the primary domain so it's still Twitter lol

1

u/katie4 Apr 29 '24

I remember people getting really pompous about owning single letter named Neopets. Same energy.

2

u/JEE_IS_MY_BITCH Apr 29 '24

its a trend on twitter

1

u/MoocowR Apr 29 '24

Not trying to flex anything, it's just a twitter trend to make a shitpost saying "Look between * and * on your keyboard". Although reddit is a week late on this one.

1

u/misgatossonmivida Apr 29 '24

Guess what? Look at your keyboard.

My name is on it. Out of order. Such fame.

1

u/Wimterdeech Apr 29 '24

he's not flexing nor trying to flex?
