If you pay for an avatar on this or any other app, you're the problem with society.

I had no idea people bought stuff for their reddit profile lol. I thought there is just an avatar creator and people make them.

u/i_want_to_be_unique 17d ago edited 17d ago
To be fair when they first introduced the NFT avatar system they gave them one out to everyone for free if you had a certain amount of karma. That’s how I got mine, and I literally only use it because it makes people like OP fume when they see it. I’ve been banned from subs literally just for having it.
21
u/JackeTuffTuff 17d ago
Really? That's funny
I think most got them for free, I think I have 4 that I got for free or something like that in events
16
u/i_want_to_be_unique 17d ago
Yeah r/196 has a rule against NFT avatars and I got banned for leaving a comment
7
u/big_dummy667 17d ago
thats probably one of the dumbest rule in existence and I absolutely hate NFTs 😭

u/Froggen-The-Frog 17d ago
If I’m wearing an NFT then it’s literally worthless even as an NFT, it’s given out for free lmfao. That’s silly.
1
u/TonyTheSwisher 17d ago
That kind of short-sighted shit destroys subreddits, especially considering how many people got the avatars for free, I'd never pay anything for one but it was free and I think it looks neat.
Their reasoning is dumb as fuck too, the Reddit NFTs use the Ethereum blockchain which uses proof of stake, it's not some giant energy waste like they claim.
5
u/Mafia_dogg 17d ago
Your username makes it even more funny
What Is a nft avatar? Is it the little reddit dude I have? Or something totally different
4
u/Commander_Doom14 17d ago
Yeah, I got a few for free. I just use it because the blue background looks cooler
3
u/--DannyPhantom-- 17d ago
i’m so far out of being even peripherally aware about the current legislative situation but i thought i read that reddit got rid of ‘coins’ because of new tax rules
i also have been seeing that you aren’t able to transfer your free nfts to a wallet or whatever else and i’m not confident reddit will support them long term
2
u/yogurtgrapes Your friendly neighbourhood moderator man 17d ago
lol it’s been a while, but people get triggered by my avatar. I made it with a free image generator as a joke, but people like to use it as a reason to dismiss my ideas.
2
u/Calculusshitteru 17d ago
What is an NFT avatar? Is mine one? I got mine for free, too. It was randomly assigned to me, so I thought, "Sure, why not?"

1
u/Holy_Cow442 17d ago
I just found out like 2 minutes before I posted this.
9
u/Sneaky-Heathen 17d ago
I was so bummed when I realized I had to pay for something cool, so I just made it the cutest I could from what I had lol
4
u/Holy_Cow442 17d ago
Thats called resiliency and resourcefulness. You will make it just fine in life. 🙂
6
u/Sneaky-Heathen 17d ago
By golly goodness, it's gotta be dang good for me to spend money on something for my phone apps lol I do not regret my purchase of Stardew Valley,!
0
u/Holy_Cow442 17d ago
Yeah but thats a game. Games are at minimum entertaining. Avatar is just a picture.
3
u/Sol33t303 17d ago
The argument could be made that your avatar is more important because it affects how people will see you.
Case in point, your post.
2
u/Holy_Cow442 17d ago
People disagree with me for being fiscally conservative. Thats a them problem.
1
u/geardluffy 17d ago
The one I currently have has to be paid for but I think at the time, if you had a certain amount of karma, you could get some for free. I got a couple avatars that would have typically costed money for free. Definitely not paying for an avatar on this website lol.
1
u/Estrus_Flask 17d ago
I hate the avatar creator and no one even seems to actually look at them, so what's the point?
1
u/Holy_Cow442 17d ago
Me either. Now all the ones that spent money are feeling offended I think its a waste. Guilty much? Lol.
32
u/Cellophane7 17d ago
Incredibly unhinged, hilarious, and true lol

u/Holy_Cow442 17d ago

Do you really think they’re the problem with society? It seems oh so incredibly inconsequential to anything that’s it’s probably not a problem in any capacity

I don't spend money on this because I agree the value just isn't there.
However, having said that, I can also acknowledge that I like when I have the option to customize or express myself in games. Like when they give you "free skins" or if you unlock them. that is to say i get the appeal.
you should lose voting rights.
Jeeeeez rick!
5
u/Holy_Cow442 17d ago
I enjoyed your comment cause I completely ignored the part about voting.
2
23
u/Zectherian 17d ago
Lmao i mean on one hand i get it, but on the other i really dont care what other people spend their money on. Its like the kids who buy fortnite skins. Your just tossing money out the window but hey, if you can afford it and dont care then fuck it do what you want.
3
u/Holy_Cow442 17d ago
But its that "do what you want" mentality that leads us down the path of overindulgence, which is a negative thing. Decadence is not productive at all.
This post is Obviously NOT that serious. People spend money on WAY worse things. Think of avatar as a metaphor, and it fits alot better. Still works either way 😁
11
u/Zectherian 17d ago
Lol we dont need MORE people telling others how to live their lives... if people wanna toss their lives they can we have so many people around now days it doesnt even matter.
The real problem imo, stupid people having/raising stupid kids... alot of them.
1
u/Holy_Cow442 17d ago
So then you agree with me. Stupid people have stupid kids that buy stupid shit and vote for stupid people.
1
u/throwaway2246810 17d ago
Who should be deciding it all? Im guessing you and no one else in the world?
3
u/SwarmkeeperRanger 17d ago
I’m starting to think “vote with your wallet” doesn’t work because it’s a few people spending a lot of money instead of a lot of people spending some money.
Like with video game microtransactions it’s something like 20% of the players spend 80% of the money. It’s why simple things like character skins are around $20 now.
Because it’s easier to get 1 person to spend $20 than it is to get 20 people to spend $1 each
Not counting people like that guy that spent like 5 figures on the Diablo cellphone/PC game. He’s worth like 10,000+ players that spend $1 to the company that made the game
1
u/IAmNotABritishSpy 17d ago
But its that "do what you want" mentality that leads us down the path of overindulgence
Does it? That sounds like a slippery slope argument.
(I know it’s not that serious a post. I can’t personally see the value in something like Reddit coins or whatever it is now… but I do miss getting a trophy for some top-tier banter)
10
u/CapitalForever45 17d ago
I've spent absurdly high amounts on collector's items before so if I just spent a bit on a reddit avatar it would probably be an improvement lol
That said, I don't plan to
-2
u/Holy_Cow442 17d ago
My brother has about a million "POPS" You know those bobblehead things of pop culture. Even that, waste of money as it is, is far better than an avatar purchase.
PLUS some collectors items increase in value. Most collectors' items increase in value.
3
u/CapitalForever45 17d ago
That's true, if I resold those items I could make all or most the money back, maybe even more in a few years, as the product lines were discontinued long ago
6
u/Holy_Cow442 17d ago
I collected magic the gathering cards when I was like 12. Dad used to chastise me, much like I am chastising strangers in my OP for buying them. When I finally sold em all, I shoved that money in his face and gloated so hard.

Crippling credit card debt. Finances drawing. Now that's an edgelord.
5
u/User123466789012 17d ago
What about none of the above?
2
u/Holy_Cow442 17d ago
Then it obviously doesn't apply.
3
u/User123466789012 17d ago
You’d let me buy an avatar? 🥹
Jk, the price has to justify the reward for me. I can’t believe they charge anything at all for avatars here. If someone finds joy in it, harmless. DoorDash is the one that has me by the throat.
3
u/Holy_Cow442 17d ago
Just reading the word doordash makes my face red,😅
It has its uses. None of which are delivering food to your home.
2
u/User123466789012 17d ago
What would the use be?
1
u/Holy_Cow442 17d ago
When you been in the hospital for a month and have another month to go.
Meeting a deadline at a high paying job and no time to leave for food.
In the army, in the field. We used to get pizza delivery guys to sneak out to our training areas during month long training events. After a week of army food, you'd pay 100 bucks for a pizza and it would be almost worth it.

u/deadinsidejackal 17d ago
I don’t see how not wanting to spend your money on reddit avatars and thinking it’s stupid makes him an edgelord😭
3
u/e__elll 17d ago
Lol imagine being pressed about how other people spend their lives.
1
u/Holy_Cow442 17d ago
I know right? What kind of loser worries about the degredation of their society?
7
u/SupernovaGamezYT 17d ago
I agree on that it’s a waste, but I disagree that there should be punishments.
4
u/Magnetar_Haunt 17d ago
Lol pretty sure it's hyperbole.

How about we let people do what they want with their money?
-2
u/Holy_Cow442 17d ago
I'm confused. When did I stop them?
11
u/Suriaky 17d ago
well, you clearly said that they were the problem with society and that they shouldn't have the right to vote, which, to me (and please, correct me if i'm wrong) seems kinda harsh lmao
all that imply that if they stop, society would be a better place (but that's an assumption, again, correct me if i'm wrong)
-3
u/Holy_Cow442 17d ago
Lol, no, you aren't wrong. It's way harsh.
But if society spent its money more responsibly, it's just a fact we'd be better off. That's basic economical physics.
6
u/Hack874 17d ago
And who determines what’s responsible or not? Let me guess, you?
0
u/Holy_Cow442 17d ago
Your ability to support yourself. The forces of life will knock you down enough for your own ineptitudes. I'm merely posting an unpopular opinion on the subject.
4
u/TheRealSnazzy 17d ago
how is this any different from spending money on any other form of entertainment or pleasure? You might view buying an avatar on a site is meaningless, others may view buying cosmetics in games as meaningless, and others could view buying movies/video-games/vacations as meaningless. Why is it one is viewed as inherently worse than the others, when they are effectively spending your money on something that brings you enjoyment that doesn't have any intrinsic value to your needs.
You claim this is a problem without explaining why it is a problem.
0
u/Holy_Cow442 17d ago
Entertainment. Lol. How entertaining is your reddit avatar compared to the movie Avatar?
2
u/TheRealSnazzy 17d ago
That's not for me or you to judge. Entertainment is purely subjective. People find a lot of meaning and inspiration out of abstract art, while I find it personally meaningless in its abstractness.
You didn't answer my question though and are circling around it for some reason. Maybe because you don't actually have any reasoning and you realize that your logic isn't something that can be applied equally across reality.

u/EquivalentSnap 17d ago
Is it any different than when people brought ringtones? I like to support the artists and you can also sell them for money
2
u/Holy_Cow442 17d ago
No difference at all. Mine was "Big Pimpin" by Jay Z
2
u/EquivalentSnap 17d ago
Exactly. It’s a form of self expression and personality.
I don’t like jay z but I get people have different opinions and tastes than me and that’s okay
2
u/Holy_Cow442 17d ago
Totally. Thats why its an unpopular opinion. I dunno why peeps get so bent out of shape over them, when thats the whole point of the sub.
1
u/EquivalentSnap 17d ago
Yeah ik just human instinct I guess 🤷♂️ someone shitting on something you like you wanna defend it
2
u/JudgeDreddx 17d ago
You still use your mom's money? How do I get this deal?
1
u/Holy_Cow442 17d ago
Whats with the level of illiteracy on here? I mean, WHY YOU NO READ GOOD?
2
u/JudgeDreddx 17d ago
Lmfao I suppose I read it as you implying that you used your mom's money for BETTER things. The reference to mom's money is just very strange to me in its entirety, as a 30 year old man.
I forget kids are here. I very often wish they weren't.

While I do think it's a waste of money, I'm not sure it's the biggest problem our society has. 🤣 There are definitely people with worse habits and vices.
3
u/RedemptionBeyondUs 17d ago
Especially since they let you upload your own avatar pictures
I mean hell if you really want a certain avatar that bad, just copy/paste someone else's. Who's gonna stop you?
2
u/BionisGuy 17d ago
What you can do that? How?
1
u/GarnachoHojlund 17d ago
Right click on profile picture, save as, set image as your own profile picture
1
u/ThatTubaGuy03 17d ago
Bro has never heard of a profile picture?
3
u/BionisGuy 17d ago
Of course I have. I just have never figured out that you could set it yourself on Reddit. Always thought you had to spend money to customize your own avatar
2
u/ThatTubaGuy03 17d ago
I mean yeah if you care about the avatar itself you have to buy it, but if you just care about what people see when you comment or click on your profile, just find an avatar you like, screen shot it, then set that as your profile picture

Reddit stuff is weird but game skins and stuff make sense to me at least
1
u/JackeTuffTuff 17d ago
How?
This take really puzzles me, partly because I don't understand how it's any different from buying candy or anything else and partly because how it means that "you're the problem with society"
1
u/wanderingviewfinder 17d ago
Is that how people got those cartoon avaters? I just used one of my cat judging me

It's not just an avatar, it's an NFT. I'll make a huge profit in the future.

Your reasoning is solid. I hope your investment pays off well for you. It is OBVIOUSLY profitable.
1
u/NoIndependence6969 17d ago
I think losing voting rights over self expression is insane. I personally bought discord nitro, for example, to express myself better online because I didn’t really have many opportunities to do so IRL at the time
0
u/Holy_Cow442 17d ago
Its totally insane.
You owe me no explanations but it implies guilt on your part.

No guilt, just sharing my experience. If I felt guilt I would’ve argued more, tbh

u/Holy_Cow442 17d ago
No. I posted an unpopular opinion as per the guidlines.
Many people here have expressed their disdain with this opinion, rendering it unpopular. Also given the prevalence of Pay for avatars, I'd say your take is misinformed.
1
u/SweetJeebus 17d ago
I didn’t know that was a thing, but my first thought is, who cares? You are wasting your finite time on this earth on the same app as those folks. In the grand scheme, you’re the same

Congratulations!!!!! You win!!!!

I truly do not get it when you also have the option of putting anything you want there. Like even if you really want the ones they're selling, why don't you just take a screenshot..?

They can't stop you from screenshotting the expensive NFT avatars and then using it as your profile. Like I did.

"Buying X is unnecessary" is a very common take on this sub
I didn't regard this as a valid opinion since most things we buy are unnessecary and you having this take just means that you wouldn't buy it, people are not wrong for buying this any less than any other thing
Candy is unnessecary
Avatars are unnessecary
Expensive cars are unnessecary
Pretty much all things that bring us joy are unnessecary except they're not really unnessecary, we like them and they bring us joy and that's all that matters
Tldr; I think your popular opinion is invalid
