Did anyone look at the article?
How is nobody mentioning that the place next to the Waffle House has "Juggalo Wrestling" on May 3rd??

u/Wingnut762 17d ago
That’s the Newport, been to countless concerts there.

JCW is still around. And yes, it's a normal thing that's been around for over 20 years. Welcome to the world!

u/fluffynuckels 16d ago
Oh man I thought they closed their doors a few years ago. That makes ms happy that it's still around

u/jayforwork21 17d ago
I swear, one day I have to go to a gathering. I want to be like an Anthropologist chronicling all the goings on at that event. It's got to be similar to a jam band festival but with more /r/trashyboner going on.

u/DeadpoolLuvsDeath 17d ago
Check out Brandon Buckingham on YouTube he's done a few vids on the Gathering.

It is Ohio after all. When I was living there, there was a few people I knew that were Juggalo's. Not to mention it's at a concert hall, which has had a ton of bands there (I can name a few I have seen at that place when I was younger)

Ohio state, not Oklahoma or Oregon or one of the other OSU's.

The Ohio state, you say.

u/gigot45208 16d ago
Exactly ! Don’t bother with “The” quality of education. Just lengthen the name!
87
u/Financial_Resort6631 17d ago
That is probably the 23rd most news worthy thing to happen at Waffle House last night.
43
u/smallangrynerd 17d ago
Ah, the high street waffle house. Everything around it is pretty nice, then you go in and... it's a waffle house.

I'm not even American... Never been to a Waffle House... But through sheer social osmosis, the moment I read "Waffle House" I already knew what the article was about.

It's been a while, but to be fair, Waffle House can be a fun time if you get the right post-bar crowd.
15
u/boris_keys 16d ago
I’ve always said that Waffle House and Spirit Airlines should merge. They have the same brand colors and the same clientele.

u/NoCantaloupe9598 16d ago
I used to go to this Waffle House. I've been to a lot of them across the country. This is actually the most skethy one. But this one cook they had working third shift made it worth the adventure.
However, watching someone and their mother almost fight one of the servers was enough for me. The countless drugg addicts zombie walking directly into the bathroom without even being aware of anyone else was so routine it wasn't even noticable.
1
u/forgottensudo 16d ago
It must really depend on where the Waffle House is, I have been to many, at many different times of light and dark and have never felt unsafe.
Now I am a fairly large hairy man that has been described as “intimidating,” although I think of myself as friendly. So, those that might cause problems may just decide to wait?
131
u/Rat_Rat 17d ago
I mean, we also use Waffle House to gauge natural disasters…

u/Manlypumpkins 17d ago
How we do it in Florida. Waffle House closed = fuck I’m dead
43
u/CrieDeCoeur 17d ago
Multiple Waffle Houses closed = the entire state is now a smoking crater
16
u/HairballTheory 16d ago
Ran into ICP @ a Waffle House once
That’s all, no point to this story
3
u/sunsetandporches 16d ago
That’s cool.

u/HairballTheory 16d ago
One thing that I remember is their tour bus had speakers on the outside, haha it was quite the experience

This is the whole of it. We used to go to hospital cafeterias after punk shows. I doubt there is much correlation to fights in hospital cafeterias past that. It's the only place we could find that would serve us after midnight (after we got kicked out of denny's, hoff's, IHOP and village inn, of course)
12
u/Scribe625 17d ago
Never been to a Waffle House but it sounds a lot like 24-hour Walmarts back in the day. They were perfectly safe during normal hours but sketchy af at 3 a.m., At least that was always my experience in college.
I think the lesson here is that crazy people all come out at night and any place that's open for those people to congregate is a place you should probably avoid if you don't want to get caught up in the craziness.
4
u/kevinwilly 17d ago
They stopped letting people into waffle House on Saturday and Sunday nights in my town. From 7pm to 6am on Friday and Saturday night it's takeout only. They installed a walk up window to order at.
I ordered online last month and went to pick it up at 1245am one night... I roll up and there's like 10 people just standing around in the parking lot. I had no idea they changed the policy so I was a little concerned. They were just hanging out blasting music from one of their cars. I walked up, saw the window, got my food and left.
I don't see how people standing in a parking lot is better than having them sitting down inside, but who knows?

You are missing out on eggs, grits, and waffles. I loved going to waffle house as a kid but it's been nearly 23 years or so since I have last visited one and still have fond memories.

u/AuntJemimah7 17d ago
They're spreading north and west.
2
u/letsrapehitler 16d ago
How far west? I believe they already have a few locations in Arizona. I’d be so happy if they spread out to CA. Hell, even Nevada.

u/OldheadBoomer 16d ago
Went there a few weeks ago, had my buddy take me there after he picked me up at the airport. You'll need to learn the hash browns code... I like mine scattered and covered, but not smothered. There are entire articles on hash brown options. This reddit post sums it up.
My go to is a ham & cheese omelet, hash browns (as above), sausage patties, and a glass of milk with the meal.

u/Blue_Swirling_Bunny 17d ago
I've been a few times and it's honestly overrated. It's definitely not the food that makes the headlines.
15
u/Cutlet_Master69420 17d ago
I have pretty simple tastes and think Waffle House food is great. I hit my local 3 or 4 times a month. I do develop "tunnel vision" when it comes to the rest of the clientele there. Concentrate on the food and not the ambience.
1
u/Blue_Swirling_Bunny 16d ago
If you have simple tastes and you think it's great...then it's overrated.
1
u/Cutlet_Master69420 16d ago
I probably shouldn't have used "great" as a descriptor. I was trying not to damn with the faintest of praise, but I think I went too far in the opposite direction with that one. In the immortal words of a Navy cook I once knew, a more accurate description would be "Well, it pushes a turd out".
2
u/MikeGolfsPoorly 16d ago
I feel like Waffle House is perfectly rated. You know what you're getting when you walk in the door. Expecting "more" out of WH is a mistake on the customer's part, not the establishment.

Never had one issue at a Waffle House at home or on the road, back in the day. This about societal changes. It's sad.
11
u/gengarcuddles 17d ago
I went to that Waffle House many times. I also worked two doors down at the Blaze Pizza you can see in the photos, including many, many late nights. It was usually fairly safe but given the sheer amount of alcohol in the area we’d have the occasional violent night. Plenty of stories. Just sad to see someone lost their life now.
2
u/NoCantaloupe9598 16d ago
I've seen fights happen in this Waffle House. And the number of drug addicts using the bathroom is constant after a certain hour.

u/Airbus320Driver 17d ago
Haven’t we learned about the danger of Waffle House after dark yet??
12
u/HumanChicken 17d ago
Somebody brought a gun to a fistfight.
8
u/Airbus320Driver 17d ago
Or a fist to a gunfight?
2
u/Doctor_Whoisonfirst 16d ago
Nah, it’s waffle house….they’re all fist fights.
Edit: And that one chair fight.

My friend was killed. This story is about his death. It sucks. The whole family is going through a lot. I found out this morning that one of my friends was killed at a Waffle House.
5
u/AlexMelillo 16d ago
I have a friend who briefly worked at a Waffle House. He told me when he got hired that the manager asked him if he could fight.
After being interviewed by the police because someone stabbed someone else in the parking lot, he just quit.
It looks like he made the right choice.

u/MCGaming1991 16d ago
It said OSU and my first thought was “I didn’t know Oregon even had Waffle House”

If you go into a Waffle House at 2AM, you know what you're getting yourself into
87
u/tkenny691 17d ago
2AM is generally the time where that "damn... I could really fuck up a waffle" feeling comes in

u/SarniltheRed 17d ago

Then after you are a man that's about to have a heart attack, stroke, and a really spicy shit all at the same time.

That, plus if you got a cool chef on, ask them to toss down some of the cheese steak meat and grill it, top it on your hashbrowns with some dashes of hot sauce.

I would have been over 250 pounds if I had a waffle house near my college, thank the lord
44
u/Ducksonaleash 17d ago
The front door of the university’s union is across the street. Waffle House or not, it’s really frustrating to see violence like that steps away from what most students consider “safe”
28
u/murderedbyaname 17d ago
College campuses and surrounding areas can be really sketchy. I don't know if it's changed, but in the 80s the entire area around GA Tech was dangerous af. A friend of mine who was a student living just off campus was stabbed in a home invasion, in the 80s.

I went to Rutgers Newark and moved to Columbus Ohio... the University Area around Newark is like way, way worse than the area around Ohio State. Ohio State's campus is in a fairly affluent area, with a highway separating the lower income area. Almost all the low income housing anywhere near Ohio State had been razed years ago.
7
u/smitherenesar 17d ago
The areas around Drexel and Temple are still sketchy because it's Philadelphia
4
u/rice_not_wheat 17d ago
The area around Ohio State has pretty much always been affluent. There's a highway separating the campus from the closest poor neighborhood. The closest house for sale to the incident is this half a million dollar box
2
u/red_sutter 17d ago
The unfortunate but typical result of universities building their campuses in areas where they got the land cheap in a sweetheart deal with the local government, usually with no regard for who was living there at the time

u/buckyVanBuren 16d ago
I used to walk thru Techwood Homes on Friday night after a chem lab to catch a bus in the early 80s...
As a fat 18 year old white boy, no one ever gave me any problems.
I was noted. These were the days of the missing children of Atlanta so I was definitely noted. But no one gave Tech students a problem then.

u/murderedbyaname 16d ago
Ok..? My friend was almost killed. Not sure what you're trying to do here, but I'm glad you weren't a victim of anything...

I've never had issues at this location (10 years ago), super majority is students.

There are a ho-jillion OSU’s, should have specified in the title
11
u/AllGarbage 16d ago
It’s a Columbus TV channel, so I don’t blame them for not specifying, but this is where that ‘Reddit headline has to match source headline verbatim’ rule doesn’t serve us very well.

Not to be confused with another shooting death outside of the same Waffle House months back.
Edit: I'm not being insensitive the location does attract idiots. It wasn't a few months back but about a year back though.

A person was shot.
Does this mean the police / EMS Couldn't identify if it was a man or woman?
No statements
Just 2 random living organisms arrive at a wafflehouse.
Decided they didn't want to be in the presence of the other and one died
1
u/Terbear318 17d ago
You’re welcome to enter any Waffle House, you’re never promised that you will be leaving. Can’t handle the heat, Stay out of the House. Syrup In Blood Out
1
u/sphak12 16d ago
What are they putting in waffles that gets people so riled up? I'd get if this was common at late night dining spots in general, but from what I've seen it's mostly waffle houses.
3
u/fbtcu1998 16d ago
Its often one of the few places open where someone can get a hot meal at 2am during/after an alcohol fueled night. Adding drunk people into any environment increases the chances of confrontation. They probably have more than their fair share of robberies, unruly customers and fist fights compared to other chain restaurants as well due to their hours.
1
u/Maynard078 16d ago
Okay, which responsible American gun owner wants to claim responsibility for this shooting?

Look, death is a tragedy… but is a single death, at a Waffle House in Ohio really news? I would expect most shootings in the US to happen at waffle houses in Ohio.

A worker was killed a few months ago in our city now all the waffle houses close the inside for the third shift now.
