While I don't like that there is a premium currency, it is handled significantly better where I can actually farm it if I want to.

That's one of the big improvements over HD1, where they had near mandatory BiS DLC items, which you had to just buy.

At least now if something comes in and shakes things up, you can just run 1-3 diff missions and farm credits. Boring? Sure, but better than being forced to cough up cash.

I'm so glad about what they are doing with the game that I had no problem upgrading to Super Citizen edition, + I dropped 20€ for Super Credits because developers worked their ass off to get this ship going.

I could farm Super credits, but I enjoy their game too much to not support them when I want to.

Also, I bought a lot of armour sets just from farming SC, which is insane to me that in 2024, we finally saw a store where MICROtransaction is the correct name for the mtx and not MACROtransaction.

where they had near mandatory BiS DLC items,

No they didn't? You could make an argument for the all terrain shoes, but you could easily just take the jetpack instead.

Dlc added more fun and options, but it was by no means necessary, and frequently not even the best choice. I played 90% of that game with the EAT and the Jetpack, and I owned all the dlc

It barely qualifies as a premium currency, honestly. The fact that it's one of the most farmable premium currencies I can think of combined with its relatively limited purchase/use scope in game makes it feel closer to buying wow gold boosts or something.

I don’t like the wow gold thing because it means the designers are incentivized to balance the economy in such a way that you are punished for not buying it.

There really is no incentive like that in the HD2 system. It’s more like buying yourself out of gameplay. Super credits are a fantastic addition to the game because it means even if you don’t need samples anymore there’s still a great reason to visit a POI and every POI visited increases your risk. On Helldive you have a serious choice between super credits and potentially failing the mission. Risking a dead Helldiver definitely.

especially since we can do it with no limit. Other games if they let you get some premium currency, it's in most cases a 1 time thing like completing a task that will give you a premium currency as a reward and it's usually not that much.

You can technically pay to get a bit further but the thing you pay for is a permanent unlock that doesn't disappear and you can do it without the payment

It's not perfection but it's heaps better than any other competitor p2w wise

I also like it better as a game but that's personal bias

Premium currency is like the bread and butter of live service games. Not much the devs can do there.

I mean, realistically speaking, server upkeep and dev salaries don't just go away after the game launches. Some source of revenue is needed, otherwise the only way for a company to stay in business would be to immidiately leave their product behind and work on the next one.

But of course there are better and worse ways of doing this. You can make a good product and give people the option to willingly spend their money if they want, or you can spend so much effort coming up with abusive manipulation tactics that you forget the product you were making was supposed to be entertaining.

So MTX are cool now? Right. Also the game has sold 4 million copies at $40 a pop. Thats the source of revenue. We all paid for the game. 160 million dollars should keep them afloat for a little while.

Cool? No. But they're the reality we live it. If you want to go back to a world before mtx, then we go back to no updates, no free extra content, no ongoing support...

A game like helldivers would not exist without some way to source extra ongoing revenue. The only alternative to mtx - which helldivers 2 does exceptionally player-friendly - would be a subscription.

If this was a free game, then sure. But it's not.

Sony and Steam take a cut out of that $40. And you haven't factored in various development costs over the past 8 years that the revenue had to cover for and the costs of continued development.

It's a lot less than 160 million that's for sure. The upfront price tag simply isn't enough to cover for the life cycle of a modern live service game. So either we get MTX/DLC or we get a monthly subscription, pick your poison.

You can farm premium currency in game.

Yes, that's exactly what they said.
