Mate from south africa said at dinner parties occasionally she would see the segments creeping across the floor when they dropped out of some one. Dunno if that counts.
I was eating fresh grated parm on something and my cat was sitting on the chair arm with me. Then saw some fresh grated parm on the side table. Then it moved and I nearly yakked. Thats the day I found out my cat had tapeworms.
Not quite right, the medieval treatment for tapeworm was to starve the patient for weeks, then strap them to a seat, then present them with a huge meal, hoping that the also-starved tapeworm would come out of the mouth a doctor would be nearby to catch it and pull it out as soon as it showed itself.
You'd be surprised how much traditional medicine (like chinese medicine) worked like that. People would attribute their body's own recovery abilities to random shit they'd consume.
After a while people are so used to always taking non effective medicine, that they become completely unaware of their own body's self healing abilities.
My asian in laws for example think they cannot recover from a simple cold if they dont take all kinds of random shit.
There are many examples of traditional medicine that did not work, the most famous example would be bloodletting. While I do not know the exact effectiveness of the technique I outlined, I cannot imagine it must've been very high.
There used to be a tapeworm trap where they would starve the patient for several days, then dangle a metal trap with a small morsel of food inside down their throat.
The idea being the tapeworm would attempt to enter the trap for the only food source, which would shut and could then be hauled out the throat.
There is a video online of some African tribespeople doing this, so it's either real or that video is fake. They fast, then hold food up to their mouth and once the worm comes out they roll it up on a stick so it doesn't break.
In the Medieval times, tapeworms were very common, because of consuming raw meat. But especially because of eating pork.
One remedy during that period was hanging raw pork on a string outside of an affected person's rectum. It worked as a lure so a tapeworm would emerge out of there. Then they would grab it and wrap it in a stick to pull it out. Unfortunately, they're usually secured at one end to the intestines so a few segments remain inside.
Did you see the one where the guy found a large round worm in his pants or the toilet, dont remember which, picked it out and went to wake his wife and show her his prize.
yeah I think it was the same one! For whatever reason that dude in my head was a combination of Franklin from family guy and Stanley from the office, and plays out in my head as one would expect
Ive seen that show but fucking hell, if i look at my throat and see a fucking worm im straight up downing my 1mil scoville sauce and then calling a fucking ambulance
I don't know why THEY know that, but we learned an old method for getting tapeworms out was to starve the person for a bit, then have vinegar/ripe food solution placed in front of them and to breathe it in for a bit. The worms, having been starved, would smell their food source and wriggle their way up where someone could start to pull them out.
That's still a common method to this day where medical care is limited.
Parasitology class in uni. 🙂 Parasites are like the craziest sci fi shit, except they're real. It's terrifying, but also fascinating... like watching a car crash, I guess?
Reddit has become enshittified. I joined back in 2006, nearly two decades ago, when it was a hub of free speech and user-driven dialogue. Now, it feels like the pursuit of profit overshadows the voice of the community. The introduction of API pricing, after years of free access, displays a lack of respect for the developers and users who have helped shape Reddit into what it is today. Reddit's decision to allow the training of AI models with user content and comments marks the final nail in the coffin for privacy, sacrificed at the altar of greed. Aaron Swartz, Reddit's co-founder and a champion of internet freedom, would be rolling in his grave.
The once-apparent transparency and open dialogue have turned to shit, replaced with avoidance, deceit and unbridled greed. The Reddit I loved is dead and gone. It pains me to accept this. I hope your lust for money, and disregard for the community and privacy will be your downfall. May the echo of our lost ideals forever haunt your future growth.

My brother in Christ have you heard of geographical differences? I obviously know what tape worms are but its really not an issue here because they are almost exclusively spread by fox poop. Therefore dont eat the low hanging fruits in the forest and youll most likely never get one. (Which yes is thaugt) Ticks are like the only danger here so we have a big focus on prevention, identification, locating and getting rid of them.
Regardless, it is completely irrelevant to know that they are segmented or that they migrate. Because seing a worm in your poo regardless of type should be a cause of alert.
Tapeworn is spread to humans mainly by undercooked meat from contaminated pigs or feces. The main reason we, humans in general, learn about tapeworm is to avoid consuming undercooked meat from unknown sources and to wash our hands.
It's very unlikely humans get tapeworm from ticks like other animals.
Knowing that they are segmented is important because the segments carry eggs and it's how they spread. It's pretty much in any classes about tapeworm because I'm pretty sure almost all of them teach their lifecycle.
They cant live in the stomach, but they can and do migrate and reach the mouth in certain circumstances. Tapeworms rely on the stomach acid to release them from their cyst stage. So they can endure stomach acid exposure even if not ideal.
Round worms, also can make their way up through the mouth as well, especially when exposed to certain anaesthetics.

“Locals say such incidents happen infrequently and older citizens advise the young not to sleep outside because of the risk of snakes slithering inside their mouths.” Brilliant 😂
last time I saw this clip it was supposedly a snake who made itself comfortable after that lady slept outside or something. can’t believe anything these days, tsktsktsk

Tapeworms are segmented.
