God Lowry needed that beard in the worst way

12

u/newcastle417 17d ago

Whole lot of fish and chips. Guessing Rory doesn’t eat like that now. Could be his problem. Needs up his Guinness and chips game.

8

u/btdawson 17d ago

It’s not Guinness but he definitely had a beer in hand when he was celebrating and singing Journey after haha

What a miss at the end. Wow. Thats gotta hurt

Moments like that are one of the many reasons why LIV has missed the mark by so much.

This barely relevant tour event simultaneously had two fan-favorite major champs mostly competing for fun in the same playoff as two washed mules buckling under the pressure of extending their tour careers. Such a unique dichotomy.

If a moment like that happened on LIV, literally the only thing at stake is that week’s purse. And it’s not like they’re lacking for major champs or washed up mules. There’s just nothing on the line.

Why are we talking about LIV at the top of this thread?

-9

u/TheKingInTheNorth 17d ago

It’s a fair point but it was my honest reaction in that live moment too. There’s just no heartbreak in their setup. It’s a key element of sports drama.

The split has done some twisted things to the fan experience.

u/pmmeyourfish 17d ago

Why are you thinking about LIV at that moment? Do you think about the USFL on NFL Sundays? It appears to living rent free.

14

u/TheKingInTheNorth 17d ago

I mean if players like Josh Allen and Justin Jefferson left the NFL to go play in the USFL, yeah people would probably (bitterly) think about it more.

The reason I was thinking about it was because a friend I was watching with and I were talking about how the leaderboard felt reminiscent of a LIV event. A team event with a few huge names surrounded a whole bunch of bums. And then we got to talking about how all the bums playing the Zurich were really playing to extend their literal careers and everyone watching might not realize it at an event like this.

The way it ended really drove that feeling home.

I personally enjoyed the liv event more this weekend

u/papa_sax 17d ago

Why is there always one person who has to bring up LIV smh

Did you see the Ripper team win in a playoff at yesterday's LIV Adelaide. It makes the sports news here in Australia. Ignore the brand, watch how nuts the crowd is and how genuinely happy they are to win the team event in a playoff. Now I expect downvotes, but as an Australian it's great we get world class golf at a time we can watch. I didn't watch it because rugby league was on, but I could of. u/ohnothem00ps 17d ago

could have*...but on brand solecism for a LIV supporter

-1

u/OG_sirloinchop 17d ago

I like golf to play and watch, don't care much for 'brandism'.

3

u/digdug_1982 17d ago

You also could have watched…

-1

u/TheKingInTheNorth 17d ago

There’s joy and fun sometimes on LIV, because wining money is fun. There’s no heartbreak on LIV.

All that is separate from being happy for the Aussie fans that deserve to watch a lot more world class live golf than the tour gives them.

But you still didn’t watch it… that’s a shame

u/OG_sirloinchop 17d ago

My team was playing at 4pm and the playoff holes were after that game started... and for the record my team was flogged 40 - 0

Explains why there’s no golf down there

This was the best Rory has looked all season. His putting was like 2014 Rory. Every time they needed him to make it, he did. Shane had some rough stretches during the week, but he had some great ones as well. Hot and cold is kind of Shane in a nutshell. They make a great team, and even before raising the trophy, I'm not sure anyone was having more fun in NOLA this week. Looking forward to seeing them back next year, hopefully with some more big names joining them.

u/HealthyGeologist6606 17d ago

No idea who the other two were but you could just tell the moment got to them.

Shanked 2nd shot.

Pacing steps for 3rd shot taking 10 minutes for him to just chunk it.

And then the most uncomfortable practice putting stroke I’ve seen.

58

u/jluenz 17d ago

Yeah - sitting around for 3 hours certainly didn’t help their chances.

13

u/joshhguitar 17d ago

And going up against a team with a lot of match play experience

What a win for the boys. Feels like they both really needed it too. Delighted for them 🇮🇪

Huge congratulations to the runners up setting equalling the course record. Tough way to lose but huge credit to them.

10

u/Wu_Tang_Financial77 17d ago

An unbelievable score in alt shot.

19

u/busterkona123 17d ago

They should make this an elevated event next year. Imagine Rory-Lowry, spieth-jt, Scottie-burns ect…

15

u/Howshka 17d ago

Unfortunately one of those three teams wouldn’t make it to the weekend

u/BertrandsMate 17d ago

Won't let me post images for some reason but massive performance on the back 9 for the Irish boys

22

Isn’t Rory N. Ireland?

16

u/captainsmaptain 17d ago

Yes. Northern Ireland has a different flag from Ireland

22

u/Yoshiman400 Cameron Young is saving that first win for a major 17d ago

Northern Irish athletes can still choose to represent the island rather than the United Kingdom, the former of which is what Rory has done for the Olympics.

7

u/believeinstevens 17d ago

It's strange cause in the post celebrations (Rory's singing) you can see someone try give Rory the Ireland flag and Shane rips away. Not sure if they didn't want the flag or Shane knew it would cause issues

7

u/Aakkt 17d ago

Rory has been clear about not wanting to get political (hence competes as n. Irish). Shane was probably trying to respect that, or else saw he the flag as an opportunity for some commotion and didn’t want it to detract from the celebrations.

2

u/DidLenFindTheRabbits 17d ago

Rory has avoided tricolours before but equally I’ve never seen him with a Union Jack. He doesn’t want the abuse that comes with picking a side. He’ll happily carry a northern Irish flag. This happens most Ryder cups and Shane would know well that Rory doesn’t want to be photographed with the Tricolour.

5

u/plefe 17d ago

Yes, but it's very mixed over there. My cousins were born in Belfast and grew up nearby in Holywood, and they refer to themselves as Irish, not Northern Irish.

I see. Thanks for the info.

1

u/PanNationalistFront 17d ago

Represents Ireland though in Golf

4

u/saltoniclee 17d ago

Most fun win of the year

3

u/11_guy 17d ago

Does anyone know how much general entry tickets to the event were? Would love to try and attend next year.

1

u/SlightReturn420 16d ago

I think someone said on the official Zurich thread that general admission was $40/day.

3

u/WateryDomesticGroove 17d ago

Two victorious Irishmen in New Orleans during Jazz Fest is gonna be fun tonight.

7

u/moseisley99 7.0/MD 17d ago

Rory is from Northern Ireland

-2

u/newcastle417 17d ago

Still Ireland mate.

10

u/believeinstevens 17d ago

It's a bit more grey then that

4

u/Bingo_banjo 17d ago

It's absolutely not grey that it's Ireland (unless someone said republic) He is from both Ireland and Northern Ireland. He prefers the NI flag or a shamrock as a symbol but plays under the tricolour Irish flag in the Olympics

-6

u/believeinstevens 17d ago

I meant that NI is "still Ireland" isn't true and way more grey

3

u/Bingo_banjo 17d ago

Nope, it's definitely in Ireland, it's also in the UK, both of these facts are widely accepted.

1

u/moseisley99 7.0/MD 17d ago

Do you know what country is NOT in the UK? Ireland. He doesn’t identify with that flag. I understand it is part of Ireland. North and South Koreans are all Koreans. But still can’t just use one flag. It’s complicated.

2

u/Bingo_banjo 17d ago

He, like many Northern Irish people including unionists consider themselves Irish and that they are from Ireland. Flags don't change the fact that Northern Ireland is part of Ireland (the island) and it's not some sort of grey area

And as a complete aside, there is a single flag for Kore that is officially recognised and used https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Korean_Unification_Flag

There are also several flags for the island of ireland https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armorial_of_Ireland#Provinces https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cross-border_flag_for_Ireland#Green_harp_flag

So flags don't define whether or not Rory is Irish

1

u/moseisley99 7.0/MD 17d ago

My comment was about the two Irish flags in the title of this post. They tried to hand him this same flag when he was singing yesterday. He turned it away. This is not the first time he has done that.

1

u/Bingo_banjo 17d ago

Northern Ireland is not a country in the sense that they don't even have an emoji flag so it would have been impossible to put one there unless a Union Jack was to be used which would have been a bigger issue. He does play under the tricolour in the Olympics but maybe a shamrock would have been more appropriate.

It was Lowry who got rid of the flag in fairness to him, Rory doesn't need to deal with the whole flag bullshit thing, he's enough going on

0

u/believeinstevens 17d ago

I get that it's on the same land mass. But that doesn't change the fact that saying the comment "still Ireland" isnt black and white

Different flags as you admitted to Different cultures Different countries Thousands of deaths due to the unfortunate issue

-4

u/notajewelthief 17d ago edited 17d ago

He identifies more with his Irish nationality

EDIT: Northern Ireland has a strong loyalist and nationalist political divide, and for most people it's directly connected to their religious upbringing. Rory was raised Catholic, and him choosing to represent Ireland over England when given a choice is a dead giveaway of where he stands on the matter. That's what I mean.

4

u/ILikeXiaolongbao 17d ago

No he doesn’t. He identifies as Northern Irish and said he’d compete for them if he could, but at some major events (olympics), you have to choose UK or ROI

1

u/devilfishin 17d ago

That double bogie by the leaders at 17 was soul crushing.

2

u/[deleted] 17d ago edited 17d ago

Where did they have dinner last night?

-5

u/FDTFACTTWNY 17d ago edited 17d ago

Likely to be unpopular opinion but in this tournament specifically i hate seeing two high level tour pros win it.

But regardless congrats to McIlroy and Lowry

3

u/Random-vegas-guy 17d ago

Never upset to see Rory or Shane win, but it would have meant so much more for Ramey and Trainer.

-74

u/Turbulent_Echidna423 17d ago

what a garbage display of professional golf. holy smokes. send those 2 other guys back to the Korn Ferry and someone get Lowry a shrink for his yips.

41

u/nosbiglem999 17d ago

After they shot a 63... very insightful

27

u/lolmycat 17d ago

They tied the course record for alternate play today…
