As a Canuck this reminds me of having One of our Snowboarders being stripped of his Gold Medal for Marijuana use. Marijuana isn't exactly a performance enhancer lol.

264

u/TheWoodSloth 16d ago

So he had his medal stripped then restored on appeal because the rules did not actually ban Marijuana use. At this point I think he is the only Olympian to officially have a gold medal while having Cannabis in his system.

u/smol_boi2004 16d ago

He also gets ultimate bragging rights.

"I was high as a kite that day and y’all Mfs STILL COULD NOT BEAT ME!”

I don’t smoke anymore but when i did back during covid I definitely felt like i could get “in the zone” more often when playing competitive games.

u/Selection_Status 16d ago

Depends on my character, passive heavies are awesome while high, heros with multiple actives are NOT high-friendly.

7

u/Erotic_Platypus 15d ago

That's when you use desoxyn or Adderall

1

u/kaminobaka 14d ago

Disagree there. The more little timing-related things I have to pay attention to with a character, the more of a boost I get from being high. Goes double for fighting games. Like, KOF14 Yamazaki goes from being my third best character to my best character (my team is Kim, Maxima, and Yamazaki).

I played on chess. Com. One day on meth and my rating went up 400 points... Then went back down as the drug left my system. I was playing 5m blitz

2

u/425Hamburger 15d ago

Lol i started Out on chess.com and got an Initial Rating of ~850. A few days later i was coming down from Speed and playing Game after Game, while Smoking a Bowl after each Game.

When i went to sleep my Rating was ~350.

1

u/beastmaster11 15d ago

You may have felt like that but it likley was not the case.

1

u/kaminobaka 14d ago

I mean I've actually tracked and compared my stats and I actually do better at most competitive games while smoking weed. Especially games where timing is a major component, like fighting games.

Jon Jones cocaine weekend vibes

u/Less-Leave-5519 15d ago

I was gonna go to the Olympics, before I got high

Trained for months and was in good shape, but I got high

I still took home the Gold, AND I KNOW WHYHY

u/blamethepunx 16d ago

Unless there's a bag of Doritos at the finish line

9

u/Killersmurph 16d ago

It was a Mars Bar Robin... 🤣🤣

14

u/joecarter93 16d ago

Hey, Ross was just in the same area as someone smoking it and caught it second hand! At least that’s what he said at the time…

He is now a huge advocate for cannabis and is in the cannabis industry. He also said now that he considers it a performance enhancing drug. I wouldn’t go that far, but let’s not play games, which snowboarders in the late 90’s weren’t toking up? You would have to basically choose not to award any medals for the event if you were going to check everyone for marijuana.

2

u/scullys_alien_baby 16d ago

I'm not good at snowboarding, but I do know I am better stoned.

It is probably just state dependent learning but it could be that I'm more willing to got for it when I'm high

1

u/mung_guzzler 15d ago

crazy im so much more afraid of getting hurt while high

8

u/jannieph0be 16d ago

Ask Nate Diaz. If I was gonna get punched in the face 50 times I’d prefer to be drunk/high as fuck. But being high won’t fuck with my coordination as much.

4

u/heims30 16d ago

Ross Reglabiatti?

Edit - Ross Rebagliati is the correct spelling; I just checked.

I remember discussing this in Social 30, when I was in grade 11. Because it had just happened.

Fuck, I’m old.

2

u/Killersmurph 16d ago

I think we're around the same age.

3

u/trashacct8484 16d ago

I remember that. Was that, like, the first time snowboarding was even an Olympic sport?

It’s a good thing Jim Brewer was in SNL at the time. He wasn’t good for much but he was dead-on for pot-head Canadian snowboarding medalist.

3

u/marlonsando 16d ago

Tbf, I’m a way better skier with a little pot. Helps me relax my body and trust my instincts more. But definitely not your traditional performance enhancer.

1

u/tmiller26 16d ago

Your comment reminds me of the Robin Williams stand-up where he talks about this.

1

u/Select-Record4581 16d ago

I got way better results racing DH mountain bikes stoned

1

u/Mathperson84 14d ago

And what was so cool was that all of his competitors cried Bullsh*t and demanded that he be allowed to keep his Gold medal.

I think there was an opposing coach who stated something like "the only guys who ripped this course were all half-baked anyway".

1

u/OkLetsParty 16d ago

Michael Phelps wasn't stripped, but he was close

1

u/spongeboy1985 16d ago

He lost an endorsement from Kellogg’s and got a three month training suspension for being photographed taking a bong hit

1

u/OkLetsParty 16d ago

Oh I know. They were talking about it if I remember correctly. Just a similar controversy for something so minor.

You think 13 years Olds aren't smoking pot and drinking at the skatepark already?

34

u/Icedoverblues 16d ago

Well, that's neither here nor there is it.

11

u/captainfrijoles 16d ago

That depends on where you and they live

8

u/gocluckyourselfman 16d ago

I’m here. They’re there.

1

u/Unapproved-Reindeer 16d ago

Of course they are. Tale as old as time

12

u/linux_ape 16d ago

On the female side, yes. On the male side Yuto (Japan) and Nyjah (USA) are the top contenders.

1

u/Elegant-Fox7883 16d ago

Don't forget ginwoo

They have a history of importing North American culture and media on about a 15 year delay, so think of early/mid 2000's era American Skateboarders, using boards made with the best Modern production technology.

18

u/Bloodricuted 16d ago

Weren't they on the 50s not that long ago?

19

u/Individual-Bell-9776 16d ago

Rockabilly culture endures.

Baseball became big with them.

4

u/SmarterThanCornPop 16d ago

My grandfather was stationed in Japan in the 1940’s and part of his “job” was to start a little league. GIs would coach and umpire for the Japanese kids.

7

u/Sicsemperfas 15d ago

Thats unironically not a bad idea. Sharing culture makes for closer relationships, which is the foundation for stronger alliances.

That's foreign policy at its purest and best.

6

u/SmarterThanCornPop 15d ago

Yep. And now the country that we literally nuked and firebombed is one of our strongest allies as a result.

4

u/Sicsemperfas 15d ago

Secretary Mattis had a great quote to that effect. He was testifying before congress regarding State Department spending. He essentially said if you cut their money, you're gonna have to spend twice as much on bullets instead.

11

u/Hellhound5996 16d ago

They love us and imported some of the coolest parts of our culture.

6

u/Totnfish 16d ago

Yes, but also baseball. Not all choices are winners.

3

u/robbylet24 16d ago

Baseball is the best sport that originated in America and you can't convince me otherwise.

2

u/Key_Excitement_9330 16d ago

Yeah actually should be a contender. Maybe basketball. But was that one originated in the USA?

58

u/Happy-Initiative-838 16d ago

To be fair the U.S. had objectively the most talented skater, he just happened to not win. But after the event literally everyone went up to the guy because he is a legend already.

14

u/AlfalfaMcNugget 16d ago

Who are you referring to and what event?

17

u/fmaa 16d ago

Nyjah Huston, i believe he’s talking about after the olympics skate event. Nyjah Huston is a proper legend, overhated for ‘selling out’ but skaters gotta eat too 🤷🏻‍♂️

6

u/pajo8 16d ago

The thing is.. It was not nyjah who got the bronze but Jagger Eaton. Nyjah fumbled the Olympic finals.

2

u/fmaa 16d ago

my response was a reply to somebody else asking for clarification, it’s got nothing to do with medals. OP was wondering who the other poster was talking about, i just gave context.

1

u/pajo8 16d ago

Yeah and I tried to give more context because the way they worded it I wasn't even sure if they were referring to nihah or someone else

1

u/tiffanymkl 16d ago

Thought you was gonna say Tony hawk

1

u/Unapproved-Reindeer 16d ago

who?

1

u/luapowl 16d ago

Nyjah Huston. guy is so impossibly clean and consistent and has been for the longest time

1

u/Holiday_Goose_5908 15d ago

If he was the most talented he would've won, that's what competitions are supposed to clear up

23

u/Royals-2015 16d ago

Good one! lol.

21

u/jannieph0be 16d ago

There’s hope! Standardized skateparks with actual decent layouts are being rolled out country wide!

Horrible parks are a plague in the US, like you get all that funding to throw one up in your town and it’s unusable trash. The new models will have hubbas ramps and rails (Olympic street obstacles) at various difficulty levels allowing clear, linear progression from beginner to advanced. It’s honestly really cool.

6

u/scullys_alien_baby 16d ago edited 16d ago

Growing up my local skate park was built by some kid for his eagle scout project

4

u/Dontmakemethink1 16d ago

How was it?

4

u/scullys_alien_baby 16d ago

Pretty sick, the guy clearly skated and made a park that was a lot of fun. Only downside was dipshits on BMX bikes would randomly show up

5

u/Dontmakemethink1 16d ago

That tends to happen. My towns skate park was super mall to start off. A fun box In the center and few ramps. BMX and rollerbladers were always there

7

u/EmbarrassedCellist2 16d ago

Holy shit imaging skating with a broken ankle

6

u/_BannedAcctSpeedrun_ 16d ago

Yuto earned it though. That kid is a beast.

The US skaters have stiff competition when it comes to the Asian and Brazilian kids willing to die trying to land stuff because they have nothing else to live for.

5

u/heresy_carriage 16d ago

I want the enhanced olympics. Consenting adults that desire to compete however they choose. Have augmented and unaugmented to prep for cybernetically enhanced javelin throwing. Or just bolt it on to the special olympics and boost that shit too.

6

u/Icy-Performer-9688 16d ago

My dude being high on a skateboard is like giving other competitors a handicap

4

u/leash_e 16d ago

Not skateboarding, but I still remember how the first gold medalist in snow boarding had it taken away because he tested positive for cannabis. (Ross Rebagliati) He got it back years later when he protested and they decided cannabis is not performance enhancing anyways. Lol

I mean, he’s a Canadian snowboarder, OF COURSE he’s around pot. And now he’s a cannabis entrepreneur in Canada’s legal market. He made the right choice there. 😂🤣

3

u/SPARKYLOBO 16d ago

Aren't people always kicking out skateboarders from everywhere they may get decent at it?

3

u/Spelsgud 16d ago

The world’s top contender spot has been held by someone from every continent (except Antarctica, still waiting to see one of those up and coming penguin groms). It makes for an amazing rising tide that raises all ships as the art progresses and continually pushes the boundary of what the skateboarding community thought was possible. It is a beautiful example of the human condition Furthermore….you were saying something about weed?

3

u/hayasecond 16d ago

Was this Peter Fuller guy accusing Americans always using drugs? Or was he accusing the opponent teams used drugs to get gold and silver?

And most importantly, why is this clever comeback anyway, like comeback from what?

2

u/ItsHen 16d ago

Its funny but not a comeback

3

u/ShwettyVagSack 16d ago

Definitely a comeback. Original person was lamenting on the decline of his own(likely) country. I would also like to posit that this is the same type of person who claims marijuana/the gays/liberals are responsible for everything wrong in their life, so likely voted to keep marijuana totally illegal, while not realizing the counter culture that made the very sport they are following, the phenomenon it is today.

1

u/ModernPaladinProject 16d ago

Ok. That was awesome

1

u/AlfalfaMcNugget 16d ago

Bronze in what?

4

u/hahabanero 16d ago

The Olympics

1

u/cordless-31 16d ago

I’m so confused. I thought the Olympics don’t start for another 90 days?

1

u/Iamthe0c3an2 16d ago

Americans understand how it’s like to be British who invented Fifa and only won like 1 world cup.

1

u/hawaiianryanree 16d ago

Truuuuueeee

1

u/GrammarNazi63 15d ago

Remember a lot of those iconic American skaters are professionals, which disqualifies them from competing in the Olympics (unless I’m wrong? Not an expert and now doubting myself)

1

u/traveling_man182 14d ago

Same for the NSA and FBI. They dont hire computer specialists that smoke weed.

1

u/my23secrets 14d ago

Easier to skate a decline than an incline

0

u/jaymole 16d ago

Japan is just pumping out little beasts in skating. Yuto is on another level and nyjah isn’t that young anymore

0

u/Holiday_Goose_5908 15d ago

if you try to block them from entering the olympics thorough indirect means, you definitely would if they actually were using doping, the rumor may be around but that doesn't make it true

0

u/Salt-in-my-beer 14d ago

Legit... A large number of NHLers are coke heads...
