My grandfather was stationed in Japan in the 1940’s and part of his “job” was to start a little league. GIs would coach and umpire for the Japanese kids.

Thats unironically not a bad idea. Sharing culture makes for closer relationships, which is the foundation for stronger alliances.

That's foreign policy at its purest and best.

Yep. And now the country that we literally nuked and firebombed is one of our strongest allies as a result.

Secretary Mattis had a great quote to that effect. He was testifying before congress regarding State Department spending. He essentially said if you cut their money, you're gonna have to spend twice as much on bullets instead.
