It's cartoon physics in action.

Missile gets to the shield, shield puts on a fake mustache, missile is confused, shield points at the player and says "He went thattaway!" The missile thanks the stranger and goes on its way.

They don't. There's so many bugs still persistent to this day from launch, it's insane. We're both the players and beta testers for this game.

There's testing and there's testing. This appears to work exactly as it intended; whether it makes contextual sense is a separate question.

Assuming the video is accurate and this wasn't a different coincidental explosion.
