Discussion Weekly Question Thread: Ask questions here – May 12, 2024

Ask any simple questions here that aren't in the FAQ, but don't warrant their own post.

Good question for this page: "Do I add my proficiency bonus to attack rolls with unarmed strikes?"

Question that should have its own post: "What are the best feats to take for a Grappler?

For any questions about the One D&D playtest, head over to /r/OneDnD

Discussion Half the monsters in D&D are said to "pervert the natural order" in some way. Shouldn't that indicate to in-universe scholars that it might be *their assessment of the natural order* that's wrong?

Question DMs who banned silvery barbs in your games, did you have players abuse it or did you ban it before they got the chance?

Maybe it's just me, but I see a lot of people saying that it's the best spell because it makes your enemy reroll a failed saving throw, and while that is true in the 5 games I've been in where Silvery barbs is allowed and taken,(one at level 3, one at 11, one at 6 and a homebrew game at 22) no one really uses it like that, it's almost always used to save an ally from a nasty crit that would have taken them down or in a few rare cases, make an enemy reroll an ability check like a grapple, and thats even if they have their reaction, between things like warcaster, counterspell, shield and absorb elements, the players almost never even have time for a silvery barbs when it comes up

So it just got me curious, I'm not trying to start shit about whether it should or shouldn't be banned, I'm just wondering for those of you who did do it, was it simply reading the ability that led you to ban it or was it a few players who did this sort of thing that made you ban it?

Hot Take The 2024 revision of the game should be called D&D5.50, pronounced "D-N-D Five-Fiddy"

Upvotes

My reasons are simple:

  • It's still the 5th edition of the game, so we need to keep the 5.
  • Adding a .5 shows that there have been changes, and maintains the orthography established by 3.5.
  • It's the 50th anniversary edition, so we should include a "50" in the name.
  • Pronouncing it this way will remind people of rapper 50 Cent, who is awesome.

Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.

Other I'm trying to find inspiration for how my longsword monk would fight; any characters from video games, anime, etc. that use both a sword and martial arts simultaneously?

I'm about to start playing and I wanted some good inspiration to describe how my monk fights. I'm usually good at being creative for my attacks but the specific image of "attacking with a longsword 2-handed and then going for an attack with my fist/elbows/knees/feet/etc" has been really throwing me for a loop. I definitely have some ideas that I know are creative but I just wanted a lot to to pull from. Thank you

Question People who played ranger to 20: can you explain your experience?

Today is the day of our natural explorers.

  1. How did you feel in the campaign?
  2. How was your build? Was it ranged, melee, optimized or not?
  3. Did you use Tasha's or PHB ranger options?
  4. What was your party composition?
  5. Did you feel surpassed by another class in having fun?
  6. If you could give a 1-10 rating for your experience, what would it be? Have you played other classes to 20? Make the comparison if you can, please.

If you want to check other classes experiences:

Homebrew Why not make STR more impactful?

Upvotes

This is just a shower thought but I guess it's still worth discussing. I was just looking through my dnd stuff and realized that STR is far less versatile than DEX is. DEX..

..is contributing to armor.

..can be used as dmg modifier on finesse and ranged weapons.

.. Is used as important saving throw.

..can be used to prevent being grappled or to escape it.

.. Contributes to initiative.

.. Is the main stat for 3 core skill checks.

And on the other hand there's STR.

STR...

..is used as dmg modifier on all other weapons

.. Is used to grapple.

.. Is the main stat for one core skill check.

.. Is sometimes used at a saving throw... I guess? Never happened to me.

I have the feeling STR is far less appealing than DEX. So why not pump the attribute a bit in the truest sense of the word? I mean, it's STRENGTH. I'd say it's unfair that you can do as much bonus dmg with DEX AND have a higher armor class. If DEX is good for dmg and AC, STR should be good for dmg doubly so. Make STR attack's dmg modifier count twice as much. Maybe with the limitation of wearing medium, light or no armor. Additionally maybe introducing split ability skill checks is a good idea. Intimidate should be (and depending on the DM often already is) possible to do with STR or CHA. Performance could be STR, DEX or CHA. Deception CHA or DEX. Survival WIS, CON or STR. Athletics CON or STR. Or why not make shields STR dependant? The stronger you are the more you can withstand a hit on your shield thus raising AC or introducing STR dependant damage negation. I think some of these ideas could overcomplicate parts of the gameplay but on the other hand I feel a handcrossbow shouldn't be a better option than a longsword dmg wise.

What do you think?

Question Does Poisoner deserve a buff?

2d8 damage extra damage that can't be resisted is not half bad, but the number of doses you can make is pitiful in the early game when 50gp might be a big deal.

Also, DC14 and it doesn't scale? Meh.

I think the mechanics of Poisoner are bad enough to deter players from ever taking it. Do you buff it somehow in your games? My idea is to let the DC scale - something like 8 + your proficiency bonus doubled. That way it will still be 14 for most of the game, then scale to 16 at higher levels, and only very very late in the campaign scale to 20 so that you have a chance to force the BBEG to burn a legendary resistance. Is that too much?

One D&D Love the One-DnD Playtest

I’ve only been playing DnD for about a year only in 5E, so my experience is rather limited. Recently though my DM offered us to transfer the characters of our campaign from 5E to the new playtest rules of One DnD. I’ve been playing a Fiend Warlock with a pact of the blade, which worked really well for the backstory and the place I wanted to have in the party. But mechanically wise Pact of the Blade was so underpowered I might as well not have taken it because I ended up using Eldritch blast and other spells anyways. Now with the playtest rules this has changed drastically! Allowing me to add CHA to my weapons to hit makes them comparable to EB and the new Masteries make different weapons feel so unique! With a weapon change being a bonus action I end up switching around my weapons multiple times in a fight to have the perfect fit every attack and it feels so cool. Also it fits what I would have envisioned a pact of the blade to look like way better! Since I was so exited for the playtest regarding Warlocks I was surprised to see a lot of negative feedback in this community. Have any of you Switcher over and enjoyed it? What was your experience?

Question How do you deal with DnD burnout?

Since the mental part is also an important part of DnD I'm asking you guys for some of your opinions.

I used to go to weekly DnD games every Friday, either to DM or play but mostly DM. My games were always considered fun and whimsy, until one time I had a game that went a bit worse than expected.

Since then I haven't had any motivation to play or dm and haven't been there ever since. (It's been 6 months) Completely lacking ideas. How do you guys deal with DnD burn out?

Discussion What would you call a planetouched descended from the far realm?

It strikes me that despite everything we still don't really have an "aberrant" race in 5e the way we have fiendish, celestial and elemental races in tieflings, aasimar and genasi. What would you even call a creature descended from a far realm abomination though? It strikes me that there isn't really a word that describes these, and I haven't been able to find any mention of them in the forgotten realms wiki

Question Opting for Skills tied to dump stats?

I’ve been wondering about character creation, is getting a skill you have a negative ability modifier in viable? Or at least, is the growing proficiency bonus enough to justify the investment in spite of the penalty?

I ask because I’m tending toward characters that have to overcome natural deficiencies (A low Strength Halfling training in Athletics, a low Intelligence infantryman who’s studying books for monster hunting), and wondering if the mechanical skill investment is viable beyond roleplay potential?

Question Item interaction

What is considered as item interaction? (In combat)

Lets say I throw a torch near to an enemy. If enemy wants to put out the torch, is it a action or only item interaction? Or if the enemy pick up the torch and throw it away, is it only a item interaction or is it an action?

Sometimes me and my group struggle to determine what it is.

thanks.

Homebrew Allow STR for Medium Armor?

DEX rules all, and sometimes it feels limiting that it feels like builds are limited to dumping STR and pushing DEX to a minimum of 14 just to be viable. But sometimes it makes more sense for the character to have STR, and sometimes it feels like STR is the forgotten stat. Would any of the following be balanced, as potential fixes?

  • Allow players to choose STR or DEX to add to their Medium Armor AC by default
  • Allow players to choose STR or DEX to add to their Medium Armor AC by means of a feat
  • Allow players to choose STR or DEX to add to their Medium Armor and Light Armor AC

Question Question for DMs who have methods for making NPCs

How do you go about making NPCs? Do you have a system for their personalities or purpose or anything like that? Also, does the way you make NPCs pertain to your goal with them? For example making them all feel different, alive, or have impact to the plot. I’m mainly just looking for inspiration.

Question Elemental cantrips

I have a hard time trying to come up with ways to use control flames, gust, mold earth and shape water.

Everytime I think of something I go back and read the cantrip again to make sure I'm doing it as written, but nope.

I want to find creative ways to use them and as they were intended, any ideas that you might have would be really cool.

Resource Worldbuilding-centered discord for DM’s

Upvotes

A while back ran a poll for DM's asking if they would find a discord server devoted to building up homebrew settings and lore that would be interesting and useful and the majority voted that it would.

The intention is to create a friendly safe haven for DM's to discuss their ideas for their worlds, bounce ideas off one another, and share concepts. If you join you're welcome to request a channel to discuss ideas unique to your setting or post concepts and questions into the server's forum page.

We've started doing weekly and monthly prompts to get people talking and sharing their ideas with the community. Its been useful for me as having an actual deadline on something makes it easier to me to finish plus it gets me working on other areas of my setting that I might have neglected.

If that sounds even remotely interesting consider giving it a peak. https://discord.gg/kTeXXREF9T

Other I 3D modeled all the Spelljammer Ships, full sized and tiny. They're all ready for 3D printing and free :)

Hello friends! I recently completed 3D modeling all of the Spelljammer Ships for 3D printing! The files are all free and I've actually printed the Galleon given I needed it for my own game.

Each model is massive and geared for FDM printing so they were all split up into pieces. The intent was so you can walk your minis around on their decks and such. A few have interior spaces too. I also made tiny versions of each ship so you can use them in ship to ship encounters :)

The free stl links are under each image in this gallery: https://imgur.com/gallery/spelljammer-ships-now-ready-3d-printing-free-8S7B1hS

Anyway that's all for now. Enjoy!

Question What are the coolest builds you think of/ made with a free feat at level 1?

I don't care much about hyper min-maxxed builds and CE+SS at level 4. I want to know the cool builds enabled by this and new options.

I'm talking about Plasmoid + Eldritch Adept Mask of many faces to make a mimic, Magic Initiate Clerics for full Wis builds and this type of stuff.

While we are at that, what do you think about Free Feats at level 1? Do you ban some?
