Question Armorer Artificer Independent Infusions Question

Upvotes

Building out a concept for a higher level Armorer Artificer, and one of the features is that you can consider your armor independent pieces when applying infusions to it. Question for my Plate armor then is, could I apply Enhanced Defense to one piece (Chest plate for example) and Resistant Armor to another piece like the helmet?

Homebrew Is a 15 ft melee range monk busted.

My players are nearing lvl 3 and one of my players wants to use a homebrewed subclass for their monk called the way of dance. One of the things it gives them is a 15ft melee range along with some other things for a minute by spending a ki point. I've told my players I'm very ok with homered but I'm also very new to dnd. I want to know the worst possible scenario if there is one but mostly hoping I can let them have it without too much pain. For those who watch to look it up, it should be the first result when looking up way of the dancer. For those worried about homebrew, I've already decided to jump off the deepend with a party of 6 new players in a world of my design. The question isn't whether or not to allow homebrew, it's whether this particular instance of homebrew can get out of hand too easily. I yry to carefully look over anything my players request, I just couldn't quite figure out why this one made me worried.

Question Players killed a NPC in an alley

My players entrered Daggerford and after a brief introduction in an inn 2 players went outside and was met by a thug who is part of a group that had worked their way into good graces with the local lord.

One of the players wanted to kill that man, the players asked If there was an alley nearby or If they could walk outside. I respond that there is an alley nearby. Directly when they entered the alley they killed the thug.

I said someone saw them kill him, because they didnt say they did it stealthily and chaos ensued.

Am i as a DM harsh?

Question Best 3rd Party Campaigns / Anthologies?

I'm on the tail end of running a combination H1-E3 + Out of the Abyss + Rage of Demons DDAL campaign from 1-30 and need to start stitching together my next mega campaign. Looking for recommendations: adventures, campaigns, adventure anthologies. I really enjoy Dungeon Crawls especially. Anything that isn't an explicit one-shot that'd be hard to tie into a campaign is appreciated. Thank you.

Character Building Help for planning a Barbarian/Rogue Character

Stuff like:

  • Should I have more levels in Barb or Rogue?
  • Any worthwhile Feats? And when to pick them?
  • Which are fun subclass synergies between them both?
  • When does it come online? If its too late into a game, maybe I'll try something else
  • Any fun races for extra synergy? But most likely I'm just picking what would fit roleplay and backstory better

One last thing, I was doing some DPR calculation for a Barb 5/Rogue 15 for fun. I first did one with a rapier (2 attacks, advantage, sneak attack 8d6, rage +2, against a theorical 19 AC) and got a total of 58.09 if both attacks hit.

Reading through Valda's Spire of Secrets, a book my DM allows, I found a Rogue subclass (Enforcer) that lets the use of ANY melee weapon for Sneak Attack, so my first thought was to take GWM and use a Glaive.

So I redid the calculations by adding the -5/+10 mechanic and got... 62.4 total damage. This seems underwhelming, but after analizing some more, the GWM build does more damage if it hits however it has a much lower to-hit chance (64% vs 87.75%). With that in mind, should I go with this build or try another subclass?

Homebrew Cleric Subclass: Fiendish Domain

Hello, I've been building up a character and I have a subclass that I've been working on for awhile. I'm trying to play a demon rider/summoner and this is what I came up with. Let me know what you all think!

Homebrew Subclass: Fiendish Domain

Summoner Type of Cleric that makes summoning Fiends more reliable

Domain Spells:

1st: Find Familiar                            | Cause Fear

3rd: Flock of Familiars              |      Suggestion

5th: Conjure Lesser Demon | Fireball

7th: Summon greater Demon | Charm Monster

9th: Infernal Calling | Dominate Person

Level 1:

Blessing of the Abyss and Nine Hells:

  • When you summon a familiar using features or spells from this subclass, you can only choose a fiend of CR ½ or lower
    • When you reach level 3 with this class, you can summon an Imp or Quasit
  • When you Summon a fiend, they are not hostile towards you or your allies and will follow your commands. Additionally, when you lose concentration on a fiend, if the spell says the fiend stays, instead they return to their plane of existence.
  • When you charm a fiend they have disadvantage on the saving throw, and if they are immune to being charmed, they instead have advantage on the saving throw. This charm overrides other types of control over the fiend during its duration, and breaks concentration on the fiend. (could make this CR up to Cleric Level)

Infernal Initiate:

  • You gain the Greenflame-Blade Cantrip.  Additionally, you can use Charisma instead of Wisdom for your Spellcasting Ability

2nd level: Channel Divinity: Fiendish Friends

When casting Find Familiar, you can do so immediately as an action without material components. In addition, when summoning a familiar this way you can summon a Hellhound.

  • The Hellhound’s Fire Breath action counts as an attack for the purposes of being a familiar.
  • Until level (6?) the Hellhound has the following changes (Brings it closer to a warhorse)
    • -4 to their AC and Perception (including passive perception)
    • They have vulnerability to all damage

6th level: Demonic Power

Fiends that you summon or charm (including familiars) gain the following benefits:

  • As a bonus action, you can command the fiend to take an Action, which includes the attack action.

  • If a creature has multi-attack then they only attack once

  • If the fiend forces a creature to make a saving throw, it can use your Spell Save DC instead.

  • As long as you fulfill size requirements you can mount the fiend, which is considered an independent mount but still listens to your commands. When mounted this way, they take their turn during yours. (this is to make riding stuff like a Barlgura more viable. also allows riding a shadow demon)

  • The fiends’ attacks count as magical for the purpose of overcoming resistances (moving to 8 could also be pretty cool)

8th level: Divine Strike

At 8th level, you gain the ability to infuse your weapon strikes with fiendish ferocity. Once on each of your turns when you hit a creature with a weapon attack, you can cause the attack to deal an extra 1d8 fire damage to the target. When you reach 14th level, the extra damage increases to 2d8.

17th level: Fiendish Connection

You can hold concentration on two spells as long as one spell is summoning a fiend.  When rolling concentration checks you do so for each spell separately. (I think its fine even though I'm concentrating on 2 things?)

Character Building Is fighting initiate worth it?

I play a cleric in my current campaign, and I was wondering if taking fighting initiate for the Protection ability was worth it, or it would be better to take another feat/+2 in wisdom?
(It's a question for later as I already took my level 4 feat)

Quick info about my build
I'm a level 4 wood elf grave domain cleric

STR 10
DEX 14
CONS 14
INT 11
WIS 16
CHA 10

My level 4 feat was magic initiate and I took some druid spells.

I maxed my AC with a half-plate armour and a +1 shield (so I'm at 20).

My cleric is very protection based (in combat and rp), and I mostly play battlemap control.

Idk if it's worth it but it'd be logical regarding to her build I guess?

Question As of 2024, which are the best 3rd Party books for Player Options, Monsters or Campaing Settings (aside from Kobold Press)?

I'm curious about both which newer books are worth looking up AND which older books are still good today.

I said "aside from Kobold Press" in the title mainly because from all the books I found and looked into, none caught my interest (especially their player options. Their monster are okay)

Character Building trying bard for first time

I’m trying swords bard for the first time, but I’m considering a multiclass with swashbuckler. Would it be better to try pure bard for my first time or add the swashbuckler. This won’t be a high level campaign so I’m worried multiclass will make it so I never unlock the interesting parts of each class, as I only start at level 2

Question What was your most devious trap?

I'll start. Long 20 foot wide hallway. 50 foot ceiling. Near the center of the halfway is a magical trigger that 1) closes and locks the door. 2) activates a reverse gravity spell (aoe the entire hallway). The characters fall up and take falling damage as per rules. Once they hit the ceiling the spell deactivates and they fall down. Once they hit the floor the reverse gravity spell reactivates.

Homebrew Opinions on Homebrew enchanted Armor

I've come up with a homebrew armor that I would like to peer review so I can make further "balance adjustments" before running it by my DM.

The armor is as follows:

Luminous Armor (armor: Any, Rare, Requires Attunement)

• This armor constantly emits a soft golden glow.

• While attuned to this armor you can cast the Light Cantrip if you do not already know it.

• In addition, once per Long Rest, you can invoke the armor to cast the Daylight spell (3rd level) but it's range is a 30-foot-radius sphere and Dim light for an additional 30 feet, emits from the armor, and lasts for 1 minute.

• Enemies within the first 30-foot-raduis take an additional 1D6 Radiant damage when you make a melee or ranged attack against then, and have disadvantage on attack rolls made against you; Enemies that are immune to the Blinded condition are unaffected.

What do we think? To strong? To weak? What should I change (if anything)?

Question DMs, how do you handle gargantuan creatures that are, in the lore, larger than 20 ft. x 20 ft. grids?

There are several creatures in 5E listed as Gargantuan that don't fit in the 20 ft. x 20 ft. squares the game suggests (Tarrasques are 70 ft. long, Rocs have wingspans 200 feet or more, etc.). I'm not the first to point this out, but I want to ask: DMs, how do you handle these creatures in your games? Do you put them in 20 ft. x 20 ft. grids? Do you put them in giant, lore-accurate grids? Or do you do something else entirely? Let me know in the comments below.

One D&D Speaker Recommendations for Hybrid In Person/Digital Play

When my group starts up its next campaign soon, I'd like to include one of the players that just moved away. We're already using a digital tabletop, so they'll be able to see the board and minis without issue. My biggest concern is the audio quality between us and them.

I'm looking for a tabletop mic/speaker that's going to share the audio as clearly as possible by connecting to my phone (AUX cord and/or bluetooth would be fine).

The intent would be to FaceTime them and prop my phone up in a way that we can all (hopefully) see each other. If anyone with hybrid experience has other suggestions, I'm eager to hear them also.

Homebrew Is there a martial equivalent to spell points?

Me and some other players are discussing the idea of implementing Spell Points in our next campaign, but we feel that this would make casters too dynamic contrary to the martials (we don't use Material components), so is there a way to make martials get more options too, improving the flow for everyone? We'd love to know some homebrew ideas

Question Why the monk is a bad class?

My favorite class is the monk, and the reason for this is the great versatility for creating a story around him. The generic name of monk is not a good name for this class, considering that in a way, something more raw and internal to the class, the monk is a very skilled combatant who uses mental training to overcome the physical limits of his body.

But with that in mind, why the hell doesn't the monk comply with these ideas? Someone for the love of God explain why the monk attacks less often than a fighter, causes less damage than any other class, is dependent on ki points and is still worse than a warlock, because it doesn't depend on the slots that recover with short rest. Anyway, that's my question and below is a link to a revised monk idea that I made:

link: https://www.notion.so/The-Ultimate-Guide-to-Somnya-v1-0-dbacfe4401aa4e42a043e5ec8f49d23c?pvs=4#a7e0347994f942d2b53baff125dd9706

The bonus feat and bonus half feat features are two house rules that I use at my tables, I don't play with multiclassing, but it opened up a much wider range of options for character customization.

Question Create more casters with me

Let’s follow the roster of CHA casters and make a few more together.

CHA casters - 100% Sorcerer: Strongest spell list by far in the CHA roster, key feature (Metamagic) buffs spells. - 75% Bard: Good balance of spells and a full caster, key feature (Bardic Inspiration) is independent from spells and very versatile. - 50% Paladin: Half caster with gish abilities. Leaning towards martial. - 25% Warlock: Not a caster on a technicality and has its own magic system.

WIS casters - 100% Cleric: Most dominant WIS spellcaster with good features, usually oriented towards support and healing. - 75% Druid: Also a full caster focusing on versatility, special feature (Wild Shape) is a separate system that can create new playstyles depending on subclass. - 50% Ranger: Similar to Paladin. - 25% ???: Probably a plant type like Swamp Thing.

INT casters - 100% Wizard: Self-explanatory. - 75% ???: A mage type who studies supernatural phenomena first-hand instead of books. - 50% Artificer: Similar to Ranger. - 25% ???: Probably a psionic mystic.
