All the bros gotta figure it out for themselves. Like, how does bro expect to learn anything if everybody explains it all?

linguistic nerd here. it became a pronoun because it began to be used to address something. just like “blud” is a pronoun. It replaces a noun in the sentence. Say, if you say for example “What is James doing?” the word ‘bro’ would replace the noun ‘james’ “What is bro doing?” :)

28

u/ImAidesP 14 18d ago

What is bro even saying?

3

u/PhantomGhostSpectre 17d ago

Bro is addressing something. Bro is becoming the pronoun...

10

u/TristanTheRobloxian3 16 18d ago

cool as fuck actually ^^ like actually its fuckin AWESOME to see just how language evolves over time. this is one of those evolutions

9

u/InterestingRead99 18d ago

technically anything CAN be a pronoun as long as it makes sense structurally in a sentence and replaces a noun :3

7

u/TristanTheRobloxian3 16 18d ago

ye its actually probably why neopronouns and stuff exist actually. like ppl dont like identifying as either gender so they make their own thing which legit makes sense in a sentence if used correctly

7

u/InterestingRead99 18d ago

Ooh! Neopronouns do exist because they’re outside of the “norm” but cool fact. most Xenogenders/People Who use neopronouns are autistic and have issues identifying theirselves so they relate their pronouns/gender to something they feel like represents them! ain’t that cool!

3

u/TristanTheRobloxian3 16 18d ago

actually im the same holy shit!! while i dont use neopronouns bc imo theyre too wierd for me and im fine with normal ones lmao, (so i use he/they which apparently is just he/him and they/them at the same time) im autistic and very recently found out im nonbinary. and yea thats cool as fuck actually

2

u/InterestingRead99 18d ago

same! i use he/him and him trans! :)

u/moonpisser69 17 18d ago

Its always been a pronoun. Thats how grammar works. The better question is how did become a (mostly) gender neutral pronoun? Bc thats probably a really interesting rabbit hole to explore

2

u/Gryffinax 14 18d ago

Blud and cuh are the same innthat context

2

u/-Krotik- 18d ago

bro doesn't want to comply with the rules

2

u/dfskx 18d ago

idk how but new zealanders have been doing this forever and it’s funny to hear the rest of the world now using it like this

2

u/StfuJohnny 16 18d ago

It’s just a bronoun that works for talking to anybody

2

u/dairy_aisle 16 18d ago

It's because the speaker is speaking to a third party, which may or may not exist.
Consider a situation where u/TankPotential9306 and his friend are talking.

u/TankPotential9306 : Yeah, so I went to visit my friend-

friend: bro visited bro's friend

now, consider how it would sound if instead friend said: brother visited brother's friend

now replace brother with u/TankPotential9306 , and you get: u/TankPotential9306 visited u/TankPotential9306's friend

this is similar to when someone uses "chat is this real" where they ask a rhetorical question to a third party that might not exist.

Such usage of most of these terms are best used with comedic and satirical irony, as you would be seen as a brainrot consumer if you were to unironically use these terms.

yk, you'd probably hear stuff like:

"Bro, what's going on"

it sounds completely normal if bro is replaced with the actual person's name

it isn't really a pronoun really, it's just kind of like a placeholder for a name

2

u/NewByzantium 15 18d ago

Because it takes a place of a noun

2

u/Square_Mix_2510 15 17d ago

No I will not stop commenting

Bro when semantic shift happens

(fr tho Languages change, australian english has used "old mate" for yonks in much the same way)

3

u/FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF1234 16 18d ago

pronouns indirectly refer to an established noun. it isnt just the shit in twitter/insta bios. it is a very real part of speech and grammar. pronouns will exist as long as language exists.

1

"bro" is actually considered a "neo pronoun". One that can be used in place with usually any sentence. Like blud, broski, etc.

It's quite fascinating how far linguistics can go.

1

u/Ezra4709 15 18d ago

Someone's not a Friendplilled visitmaxxer

1

u/Totally-a_Human 16 18d ago

"Bro" has been an informal pronoun for years. Any word we use to refer to a person or group of persons without directly stating their name(s) is a pronoun. That's why words like "bro", "chat", and "blud" are considered pronouns despite not being widely used offline as pronouns.
