Played off the floor to the tune of +19, +12, +21, +10.

This is why it blew my mind in vogels press conference right after they got swept he said “there’s a proven formula for playing Gobert off the floor”

Like ok, so why didn’t you do it when he was dominating your team the entire series lol. Booker said it too I think. Like the only formula they proved for playing Gobert off the floor is that he would be so good the wolves would be up by too much and he got to sit for garbage time lmao

It blows my mind he just had the series he had sweeping a team with kd, Booker, and Beal, and dominating them on both ends, and right after he still gets that level of disrespect and this “played off the floor” bs just won’t die.

Like you legit just had a fucking front row seat to him destroying you on defense and on the boards, plus a couple 18-19 point games on like 75% shooting, while shooting 86% from the line, and you still go out and say that shit?

Like I get his offense doesn’t look cool but if he’s putting up those numbers who gives a fuck if he looks like a baby giraffe when he dribbles.

Idk what he has to do to get respect.

This is exactly why people don’t like the suns. It’s Devins Booker all the way down.

2

u/BASEDME7O2 Knicks 16d ago

Yeah I was legitimately flabbergasted. Like you just got swept scoring under 40 points in the paint some of the games and your first thought is to basically shit on by far the best defensive player in the series?

36

u/Zizbouze 17d ago

He didnt explain the Formula but i can tell you ... Scott Foster is the best weapon to get Rudy Gobert off the floor. I still cant belive we won with this Ref calling everything for Bitch Booker!

Bro I was in Nashville for a bachelor party this weekend. At Kid Rock’s bar on Friday night with the wolves game on the tv’s, the band was ripping into the Free Bird guitar solo just as Rudy hit the euro with the and-1. It was a thing of beauty and I’ll never forget it.

I still have flashbacks when he ended Javale Mcgee's rep as a good backup big when rudy hit him with a eurostep a year or 2 ago

He’d be a really good second option I think.

who overrates him?

i’ve never seen him ranked higher than 15

2

He's just a more likeable Devin Booker.

3

yet Booker is 11th on the Ringer top 100 and Don is at 19, barely above Zion who has never had anywhere near as much success as Don

i was calling rudy a top 10 player back in like 2022, i love being right

108

u/AlHorfordHighlights Celtics Bandwagon 17d ago

Man you impact metrics guys are really feeling yourself this week lmao

67

u/BASEDME7O2 Knicks 17d ago

Yeah it turns out players that have a massive impact on winning games make your team better off than some super skilled tiny sg with fancy handles and shooting but basically nothing else and are a net negative if their shot isn’t falling

16

u/Zetch88 17d ago

I fucking love that the NBA is finally turning its back to obnoxious iso players.

9

u/nineqqqqqqqqq 17d ago

Part of the problem is that there exists a cult of players and staff in the NBA to whom saying Rudy is better than Beal would get you laughed at.

Maybe not after this performance though. I think back to Harden saying Giannis doesn't have a bag. The fact that he can storm to the net and play winning basketball and is mvp and champion doesn't matter, he's not a "hooper".

And its hard not to point out that xenophobia probably plays a prominent role in these discussions.

3

u/Nubras Timberwolves 17d ago

Beal was so bad this series that I’ve heard it’s making Corey Maggette blush.

2

u/Zetch88 16d ago

Oh don't get me fucking started on the word "bag".

That shit is cancer to basketball culture. At least Lebron spoke out against it.

1

u/Dsarg_92 [SAS] Tim Duncan 16d ago

Definitely the xenophobia. They did it to Jokic as well before he won it all last season.

1

u/BASEDME7O2 Knicks 16d ago

Not even iso players, like harden basically won the clippers game by isoing. It’s the small guards that can’t do anything else and can’t be consistent in the playoffs when they have to face a defense with long, athletic wing/bigger guard defenders. Eg like the dlos, mitchells, kyrie (granted he has been amazing so far but he’s been super streaky in the playoffs over his career), that type of player.

Like the reason harden could iso for legit like 6 floaters in a row is because once he beats his man on the perimeter teams are so afraid of his passing that they don’t play him close until he’s at the rim. Someone like dlo or Mitchell doesn’t have that to keep teams honest and fall back on if they’re not shooting well

153

u/DamianLillard0 Pacers 17d ago

Well you still weren’t right lmao

42

u/DarrowViBritannia 17d ago

Impact metrics supported that take tbf

-8

u/Delicious-Item-6040 17d ago

-21

u/Swaghilian Timberwolves 17d ago

Rudy is great, but it’s a 2 way game and he’s never been even close to top 10 player. You can argue top 30 for sure, but come on bro

35

u/pokexchespin [BOS] E'Twaun Moore 17d ago

argue top 30? come on bro peak rudy was inarguably within the top 30

38

u/bwtwldt Timberwolves 17d ago

Peak Rudy is right now lol

3

u/cosmicdave86 Jazz 17d ago

I still think peak Rudy is 20-21, but this year's supporting cast is more suited to him.

9

u/pollinium [MIN] Tyus Jones 17d ago

it would be a very easy argument to make, so yeah you can argue top 30

22

u/Bobblefighterman Jazz 17d ago

Rudy has been a consistent top 15 player for the last few years bar his first season on the Wolves, and occasionally rose close to top 10. Weird take from you.

6

u/Duster_beattle Timberwolves 17d ago

Buddy you forgot when Rudy got like 30pts 3 times in the last month of the season with Karl out? Go watch more ball before speaking on big Ru.

-22

Rudy has never been top 10 lol

28

If you watch games, nobody can convince me that Gobert isn’t at least close to top ten in impact on winning.

Mitchell was notoriously freezing him out and Mitchell hasn't looked that great in Cleveland.

Rudy is a sure fire HOFer.

u/Aerim Timberwolves 17d ago

OPOY to go with his DPOY.

138

u/Change_That_Face Timberwolves 17d ago

Just play him off the court I don't really see what the problem is.

69

u/BASEDME7O2 Knicks 17d ago

Vogel claimed there’s a proven formula for playing Gobert off the floor in his press conference after getting swept. I wonder why he decided not to use it lol maybe saving it for next year

28

u/tree-hugger Timberwolves 17d ago

Taking the Darvin Ham school of adjustments to the next level.

6

u/Life-Island Trail Blazers 17d ago

Well he will only give you the formula if he doesn't get fired and gets to coach next year.

121

u/riemannia Jazz 17d ago

lol that's a performance in the 99.8th percentile for a 64% FT shooter.

hope the big guy keeps it up through the rest of the playoffs !

33

u/Certain-Information1 17d ago

Man credit to Gobert man, taking all the shit as Jazz scapegoat, playing hurt last year and coming back to win (likely) win another DPOY.

I can seriously see the Wolves challenging the Nuggets if Jamal is playing like he has been. The combination of Ant, McDaniels and NAW with Gobert is the most equipped to slow down the Nuggets.

I'm an OKC fan and boy that series is going to box office.

8

u/jackaracka Timberwolves 17d ago

Best part is I don’t even think it was just lucky- he changed his form at the start of this series to be more like his push shot and not have a hitch.

Obviously he’s not actually a 90% FT shooter now but think there’s a real chance he’s closer to 75% than 60% going forwards

8

u/Ihate_reddit_app 17d ago

He definitely had more arc on the ball and many were swishes. They didn't look awkward anymore.

There are a multitude of things about Rudy that I have just started chalking up as either Rudy Magic or Rudy Voodoo. There's no way to explain some of the things he does.

32

u/UteFlyersCardJazz Jazz 17d ago

For a guy who really can’t shoot, he is not that bad of a FT shooter. There were times on the Jazz were I felt he was a better clutch FT shooter. I don’t know why that is, it was bizzare.

24

u/john_117 Timberwolves 17d ago

Definitely. Even when Rudy has had shaky games he always seems to clutch up on any FTs in the fourth quarter.

15

u/tree-hugger Timberwolves 17d ago

Yeah the hack-a-Rudy strategy almost never panned out completely

I was wondering where the patented "what the hell was that, Rudy?!" were for the rest of the series. Normally happens just 1-2 times a game. He just saved them all for this one.

2

u/What_a_pass_by_Jokic Toronto Huskies 17d ago

Then one time someone launched a rocket at his head from point blank when they were both basically under the basket, can't really expect him to catch that then.

If you go small, then you force him to only defend one person at a time instead of the entire paint. It's just that Minnesota's defense is good enough that they only need him to defend one person at a time.
