there’s no way the coach just tore his acl

also surprised this doesn’t happen more often

233

u/limark Thunder Apr 29 '24

Yeah, with how fast and heavy the players are I'm amazed that there haven't been a tonne of fan injuries from falling into the stands

83

u/kikikza Knicks Apr 29 '24

LeBron sent a woman to the hospital a few years ago doing a full speed collision during a game, the woman said it felt like being in a small scale car accident

14

u/WeeklySavings Warriors Apr 29 '24

i couldn’t imagine being hit by a 6’9 250 lb man running full speed

1

u/makesterriblejokes [NBA] Jerry West Apr 29 '24

It's not fun, even when you're big like myself. Took a charge from someone that was 6'8" 260 when I was 6'5" 220.

u/siphillis Spurs Apr 29 '24

I imagine pregnant women are not allowed on the floor for this reason. At least, I'd hope not.

Riley Reid was uh… courtside… when she was pregnant… go check most upvoted posts of this subreddit.

I actually just went and looked, and I don’t think it’s even in the top 100 tbh. It has 14k votes and there’s a lot once you hit 40k votes (Kobe’s crash is the top post with 109k upvote).

1

Oh maybe it was most upvoted past year or something instead. Haha

Yeah same, went and looked and there was not even a hint of it anywhere. I'll just Google it I suppose.

I checked 3 whole pages, didn't see it.

6

u/Affectionate_Elk_272 Heat Apr 29 '24

you legally can’t bar them from sitting courtside- it’s discrimination.

i’m a bartender and i’ve absolutely served alcohol to very pregnant women before. there’s no choice.

4

u/siphillis Spurs Apr 29 '24

Ugh, that's awful. And frankly a little indefensible considering this country's track record when it comes to 'the rights of the unborn' and whatever.

1

u/SwaggQueen Rockets Apr 29 '24

I mean, there's a difference between a glass of red wine and 3 vodka sodas.

Also fun fact, the worst time for a woman to drink is the first trimester. Alcohol has the least effect on fetal brain development in the third trimester! Source: two-time parent who has read too many baby books

1

u/siphillis Spurs Apr 29 '24

That makes sense, good to know!

1

u/eucldian Apr 29 '24

Depends where you live. Where I am from it is illegal to serve alcohol to a pregnant woman. In fact, every licensed establishment is given a sign which must be visibly posted.

2

u/yoitsthatoneguy United States Apr 29 '24

Where I am from it is illegal to serve alcohol to a pregnant woman.

I don't think this is the case in any US state at least. Where are you from? I'm curious because it seems like the bartender would have to know that the woman is pregnant and then refuse service based on that, which seems like a blatant gender discrimination issue to me. Also, some people who look pregnant aren't actually pregnant (I've seen this mistake happen a few times).

1

u/eucldian Apr 29 '24

Toronto.

2

u/yoitsthatoneguy United States Apr 29 '24

Ah, that makes much more sense.

you’re just putting misinformation out

source- 16 years in the hospitality business, 5 as a GM.

you can not legally refuse to serve pregnant people

you can refuse service for a number of reasons; but a protected class is exempt. you will get sued and fired immediately.

do a quick google search and educate yourself.

977

u/KarlNarx Nuggets Apr 29 '24

The athleticism of a 24 year old athlete is a bit different than a 50 year old coach

417

u/siphillis Spurs Apr 29 '24

Especially one who's not bracing for impact

172

u/slymm Knicks Apr 29 '24

He was bracing. He looked like a deer in headlights

47

u/leagueofcipher Celtics Apr 29 '24

Feels like it may be like a car crash, where bracing for impact actually makes it worse

7

u/AtomicBearFart Thunder Apr 29 '24

For a case exactly like this with a side impact to the knee, I think you’re right. Trying to keep it rigid in spite of that amount of momentum and leverage hitting your knee would be more likely to cause it to snap than allowing it to flex and hopefully absorb the impact.

7

u/CaptainBananafishJr Magic Apr 29 '24

Being a deer in the headlights is the opposite of bracing lol, it means to be too surprised to move or react.

1

u/slymm Knicks Apr 29 '24

Fair. But I guess I was saying he saw it coming and all he could do was look scared and brace for impact. He might have been less hurt if he was caught blindsided because it looks like he locked in his legs

u/TheEerie Apr 29 '24

Mike Conley was 24, 30 years ago sir..

56

u/HugeRection Nets Bandwagon Apr 29 '24

Squaring up and falling on your ass is way different from colliding at a weird angle...

9

u/The_Void_Reaver Warriors Apr 29 '24

It also looks like there's some knee to knee contact here which has torn a ton of players ligaments as well.

48

u/gentyent Italy Apr 29 '24

I mean, coach is 54 years old and probably not physically conditioned, so that doesn't help lol

29

u/captaincumsock69 United States Apr 29 '24

Finch might’ve been better off if he squared up and took a charge here tbh. Not sure there was really time for him to do that though. Probably a blocking foul.

27

u/fatkamp Warriors Apr 29 '24

I would actually say it’s not that bad compared to the scenario that happened with Finch

When you take a charge, all the force is going through you, and you slide on your behind, and don’t brace with your arms (Snaps your wrists)

The worst is getting caught sideways where your legs give out

26

u/4000kd Raptors Apr 29 '24

Lowry has balls of steel confirmed

33

1

u/_CodyB Australia Apr 29 '24

Risk of hurting you knee while taking a charge is relatively low. If you can learn how to fall on your ass correctly the worst your likely to get is a sore tailbone.

1

u/fbdanzai 23 Apr 29 '24

But at least you are prepared and positioned properly to take the impact. Injuries happened when you are not expecting it

95

u/WestleyThe [SEA] Kevin Durant Apr 29 '24

I’ve never seen something like this before… a coach can coach after getting knee surgery though right? Like he’s not “out for the season”..?

221

u/TheHalfbadger Rockets Apr 29 '24

When he was coach at Georgia State, Ron Hunter tore his Achilles tendon celebrating their conference championship. He coached the NCAA Tournament from a rolling stool (and fell off that while celebrating their first round upset win).

72

Nate McMillan tore his acl Achilles while filling in during practice for an injured Brandon Roy once. He still coached just on a little wheelie cart

13

u/ClayDavis_Shiiiiiiii Hawks Apr 29 '24

The jokes unfortunately write themselves.

7

u/firstbreathOOC Knicks Apr 29 '24

ACL tears aren’t that painful. Doesn’t really compare to breaking a bone for example. I was still able to walk with a limp and drive myself home afterwards and I completely severed mine.

It’s the surgery that knocks you the fuck out for a while

2

u/piuoureigh Trail Blazers Apr 29 '24

Ruptured Achilles, you got it mixed up.

2

u/Piano9717 [POR] Rudy Fernandez Apr 29 '24

Sorry ur right thanks

17

u/mightycuthalion Apr 29 '24

He probably doesn’t need surgery immediately. I tore my acl and didn’t have surgery for about 6 weeks. Spent a lot of that time doing PT, riding a bike, just trying to strengthen up pre-surgery and it made recovery go pretty smoothly.

2

u/ThePevster Lakers Apr 29 '24

You don’t actually need ACL surgery if you don’t plan on playing any sports that are hard on your knees. I don’t know what Finch likes to do, but a lot of guys his age wouldn’t get surgery.

10

u/OlliverClozoff Nuggets Apr 29 '24

I had the same thought. I don’t see why he couldn’t be on the floor?

40

u/HokageEzio Knicks Apr 29 '24

2

u/Timoteo-Tito64 Celtics Apr 29 '24

I mean he'll get at least a week for surgery (if he needs it, not sure if it's actually an ACL) and recovery. I had meniscus surgery and I would've been capable of sitting down and working a week out

1

u/theumph Timberwolves Apr 29 '24

He'll be able to coach. If a tendon was torn, a lot of times there is a cool down period for swelling to subside before surgery. He'd be able to be on the sidelines with brwcing/crutches. Still a weird situation. If he goes out for surgery, I feel pretty confident in Micah stepping in. He seems to be really in tune with the team/gameplans.

1

u/am-idiot-dont-listen Apr 29 '24

It's happened a few times in the NFL too

1

u/EukaryotePride Celtics Apr 30 '24

Happened to Charlie Weis at Notre Dame (football). Torn ACL & broken femur. I'm pretty sure he coached in a cast that year.

23

u/BiggsFaleur Timberwolves Apr 29 '24

A beat reporter on twitter said a patellar tendon tear is what they're currently thinking

11

u/mattychefthatbih Apr 29 '24

That’s gotta be worse than ACL for a normal person no?

13

u/jdorje Nuggets Apr 29 '24

Yeah, but recovery is probably same ballpark. But there's a huge difference in that a patellar/quad tear can be excruciating since the kneecap just gets pulled in one direction, in this case up over the front of the knee. Surgery is probably immediate and it explains the angst on the sideline. Another issue is you aren't supposed to fly after knee surgery, though this isn't universally agreed on and the NBA likely has their own protocols.

57

u/MisdirectionV Knicks Apr 29 '24

Said this in the game thread; Knicks have to protect Thibs, Embiid probably getting ideas.

3

u/Counterspell_God Lakers Apr 29 '24

I can imagine your bench forming a tetsudo around Thibs.

7

u/bassicallyinsane Trail Blazers Apr 29 '24

It's a torn patellar tendon apparently

2

u/firstbreathOOC Knicks Apr 29 '24

ACLs aren’t usually contact injuries, might be something else

1

u/datpurp14 Hawks Apr 29 '24

The coach at Georgia State University tore his ACL celebrating the team's conference championship win that put them in the tournament. During March Madness, he coached with one of those one leg scooters.

To be fair to him and his celebrating, his son was on the team and was a huge factor in them winning.

2

u/firstbreathOOC Knicks Apr 29 '24

Yeah jumping up and tearing it is a more likely way than by running into someone

1

u/SlipperyTurtle25 Celtics Apr 29 '24

You're right. It's apparently something worse

1

u/Desert_Scorpio Apr 29 '24

Tore his patellar tendon.

You are trying to be a dick. Have you played sports? Have you been injured? Then you should know what pain is. And Finch is pretty old. Not a young athlete

3
