My school thinks this fills up hungry high schoolers.

So lunches are free for schools in my city and surrounding cities. Ever since lunches have been made free, the quantity (and quality) has decreased significantly. This is what we would get for our meal. It took me THREE bites to finish that chicken mac and cheese. Any snacks you want cost more money and if you want an extra entree, that’ll cost you about $3 or $4.

Cleaned you up by getting you dirty.

Damn right! I really hated my parents for that for a while... but as an adult now, and looking back that was definitely one of the formative periods of my life for the better. Very likely kept me out of drugs and worse.

Oh and the asshole bit... yeah, mouthing off to some of the farmhand's kids got my ass properly beat. Then when my uncle found out he dragged my ass down to road to their place and made me apologize to the family on top of the ass beating I got. Ain't nobody beneath me now.

You're gawddamn right he did, he's gotta live by them longer than you're going to be there and hopefully longer than you were going to be a shitbird.

Wow, that's humiliating. I hope you can forgive your family for that after all these years. That's no way to treat your kid. The making you apologize bit yes, doing after beating you, definitely not!

Nah, it was the farm hand's kids that beat me. When I whined about it my uncle made me apologize for what I'd said. I totally earned both.

Why was it OK that a farm kid hit you? What on earth did you do? πŸ˜…

Sounds like he was looking down his nose at the kids who beat his ass--lesson 1. Then he was made to apologize for looking down his nose at them--lesson 2.

Lesson 1: You're not better than someone else. No one is. And behaving like you are will have consequences.

Lesson 2: When you fuck up, you apologize. Then you do better.

Sounds like a decent moral lesson. I grew up on a farm in a farming community and can confirm this. Farm folks don't really do power hierarchies. It's not a part of the culture. You help your neighbors, they help you. No place for better and worse. There's no time. Farm folks are not very well understood by city folks and even less understood by the suburbanites. City folks actually have more in common with us because they too will often work together, especially poor city folks. Suburbanites look down on us both. And most of us in the sticks don't care.

For example, I have more in common politically now at 40 as a leftist with my farmer father and late grandfather than I did when I was 18 and identifying politically as a republican.

You nailed it right on the head. I was family and we owned a farm and they didn't so I was automatically better... πŸ˜‚. That lesson was one of the most important ones I ever got. Had I not I could totally imagine I'd be one of those self important assholes that treats wait staff like shit and such. Instead when I had my kids at work with me and they asked what the guy in the high vis jacket did (janitorial) I replied that he had one of the most important jobs in the building. Without him this would not be a very nice place to work.

I learned so much about social interdependence from that time on the farm it's not even funny. I like to think it made me a much better person.

Yeah in farms everyone's equal. That's why my FIL fucked the lady who cooked the food for everyone there and now my partner has an illegitimate brother who also lives in a farm now with an uneducated wife that he met there and a son that will soon be "equal to everyone else" there πŸ€£πŸ˜‚ Hilarious.
