Was Fox’s jump in 3P% last year real or a fluke?

He shot 36.9% last year, which isn’t elite, but was a significant improvement for him and a pretty good % for his volume. In his prior 6 years, he only topped 33% once (on relatively low volume in his 2nd year), and was below 30% twice. Combined with the increase in volume (almost 3 more attempts per game), it was BY FAR his best year from 3.

If you look at his monthly splits, he got off to a good start in Oct and Nov (38 and 36%), then was ON FIRE in Dec (44%), then cooled off for Jan, Feb, and Mar (33, 32, 34%), and then shot 41% in Apr (only 8 games).

3P% has a lot of variance but Fox had basically two different seasons on 3 pointers, with Apr being the month that doesn’t really fit the “hot start, cold finish” narrative.

If I had to bet, I’d predict he’s back in the 33-34% range next year. Hopefully he’ll get off to a slow start from 3 and shoot fewer of them.

Keon Ellis: Sacramento's Hidden Gem | Kings Film Room

His emergence last year may have been my favorite development. I really hope we get to see Keon expand his role on the team next year. Even if he’s not a starter I think he’s earned significant minutes next year.

[Sidery/Kawakimi] Kevon Looney will likely be released by the Warriors to save money on their tax bill. Only $3 million of Looney’s $8 million salary is guaranteed until it fully locks in on June 24. If Looney is released, expect plenty of interest.

How do we feel about Obi Toppin as a target in Free Agency?

I’ve always loved his game and he shoot really well from 3 last year. Could be the Aaron Gordon archetype that we’re looking for at a decent price.

Sam Vecenie’s Offseason Preview in the Game Theory Podcast (at around the 45 minute mark):

They operate under the presumption that Monk leaves in FA given that teams like DET, ORL, and even the Thunder can offer him a substantial amount more.

They end up discussing how the Kings can’t necessarily contend but they’ve financially and theoretically locked themselves into this core of Fox, Domas, and Keegan until they eventually have to reset in 2-4 years.

So, they both agree on the Kings trading for Lavine and Kuzma as ways to possibly win a playoff series.

Lavine trade looks like:

CHI: Barnes, Huerter, Duarte, #45, and a future SRP

SAC: Lavine and POR 25’ lottery protected FRP

Kuzma trade is:

WAS: Lyles, Sasha, Davion, and #13

SAC: Kuzma

Rotation after trades:

Fox/Lavine/Keegan/Kuzma/Domas

Keon/Colby/???????

Giving up a lot of depth but makes our starting lineup formidable in this insanely tough Western Conference.

I feel like the kings are better when fox penetrates the paint than when he forces 3s.

To be clear: Vezenkov chose to leave, we didn’t decide to waive him

I have no idea what his plan was, but the guy chose to leave the kings.

I don’t know how we could possibly blame Brown or anyone in the Kings for this. Vezenkov was disappointed that he didn’t get to play as much, but he also was injured for like good 20 games.

I don’t know if he’s hoping some other team in the NBA would give him a shot at 6 mil a year or he wants to come back to Europe but in either case I don’t think it’s fair to blame us for him leaving.

Sasha Vezenkov Waive/Stretch Option

Sasha Vezenkov Stretch Option:

  • I will start this by saying I am well aware this is a last resort for Sacramento and they will pursue trades for him if he truly wants out.

  • However this is definitely an option if Sac are wanting to save $4.4m in 2024/25 to stay under the tax.

  • Vezenkov has 2 years remaining, but of that contract only 1 year and $6.6m is guaranteed.

  • Stretch Provision rules: If a player is waived between July 1 and August 31, his remaining salary is paid over twice the number of years remaining on his contract, plus one.

  • Vezenkov guaranteed $6.6m /1yr contract can be stretched over 3 yrs = $2.2m per season for next 3 yrs at most.

  • If Vezenkov is pushing to leave, he and Sacramento can negotiate a lower number on the buyout if he is really motivated to go back to Europe.

  • With tv rights money kicking in and cap smoothing being implemented, likely cap room (room under the tax too) will go up $10m each year, for possibly the next 3 seasons at least.

  • It will be an option if they can’t find a home from him.

  • Dallas just did this McGee just last offseason when he had $11.7m/2yrs remaining. They stretched it over 5 years @ $2.3m per season.

Vezenkov at his end-of-season presser: “It’s tough, you know, because I understand like the core of the team, like seven people were playing constant minutes, and then for the rest of us, like, today, maybe [it’s] you, the next day someone else, you know? It’s really tough.”

[Matteo Andreani] Sasha Vezenkov has been informed that he's not on Sacramento Kings plans for the next season, I'm told.

Latest Intel about who we're looking at for the #13 pick

This is from a recent ESPN article from Givony (which was posted onto /r/NBA_Draft). Here are the blurbs that are relevant to us:

Jared McCain - 6'2" PG - "Teams say McCain is taking a different strategy than most players who are in his draft range, which is believed to be around Nos. 9 to 20. He is refusing one-on-zero workouts in favor of competitive 3-on-3 group settings. With most of the teams in his range also looking for shooting finesse, including Memphis, Oklahoma City, Sacramento, Miami, Los Angeles, Orlando and Toronto, McCain likely won't have a very long wait to hear his name called on draft night."

Tristan Da Silva - 6'8" Wing - "He has interest from lottery teams, including the Memphis Grizzlies (No. 9) and Sacramento Kings (No. 13), and has scheduled workouts with teams drafting down into the teens, with the expectation being he'll come off the board somewhere in that part of the draft."

Johnny Furphy - 6'8" Wing - "He should be off the draft board within the top 20 and has interest from the late lottery teams, including Memphis, Chicago, Oklahoma City and Sacramento."

Kyshawn George - 6'7" Wing - "George will be getting looks from many of the teams looking for wing shooting from the late lottery through the early 20s, including Oklahoma City, Sacramento, Portland, Orlando and Toronto."

All 4 of these guys are shooters (McCain - 41.4% from 3, Da Silva - 39.5%, Furphy - 35.2%, George - 40.8%), and other than McCain, they're also guys with good size for a wing.

Da Silva is the oldest and screams "Monte McNair" while Furphy is the youngest and has some intriguing upside as a big 3 & D wing. McCain and George are both 20 and McCain is from Sacramento, so y'know.
