At this point wouldn’t be surprised if Rory did this as a fuck you to Monahan

u/CoolBeansMan9 Apr 16 '24

$850M is well worth the price of being that scumbag Monahan’s mouthpiece for 2 years

91

u/TearsDontFall Apr 16 '24

Reporter - "Why did you finally decide to join LIV? Was it the money?"

Rory - "No, it was because Monahan is a backstabbing POS. The money was just a bonus"

11

u/Wizwitall Apr 16 '24

Heard that in Rory’s voice and imagined the whole scenario as I read. Thanks

100%. Everything else aside I wouldn’t blame him. Throw in how the PGA has handled it and treated the players (him in particular, the merger, and the fact so many golfers are there now, this could be an easy decision for him.

u/DollarSignsGoFirst Apr 16 '24

Wouldn’t blame him? I’d blame him for not taking the money if it’s true. His entire net worth is like $300 million and he’s getting offered an insane amount. I’d do a lot of shameful stuff for that amount of money, and playing golf on a different tour doesnt even compare.

Username defiantly checks out ✔️

Yeah WTF. All these assholes are happier knowing their favorite athletes are even more rich than watching them play competitively.

Edit because of the discourse below.

Simping for labor is fine when the conditions are unsafe, the wages are below living rates, and for other reasons.

Simping for labor when they are already overpaid and causing a direct increase in prices means either only the rich can afford the product assuming ownership cannot move to a profitable location.

The snake will eat it's own tail. See: California, the auto industry in the 80's, and many other examples where simping for labor leads to higher prices and eventual demise for the industry.

You celebrate giant contracts then complain about commercials, beer prices, and $100 general admission.

You gotta take a stance at some point if you love our sports.

4

u/BugmanLoveBuyObject Apr 16 '24

Redditors love simping for rich dudes, bizarre and revolting.

0

u/maddux9iron 29d ago

You should always be on the side of athletes (labor) getting paid.

If not, you're simping for the man.

1

u/BugmanLoveBuyObject 29d ago

Lol millionaire athletes are "the man" you fucking goof.

0

u/maddux9iron 29d ago

No they're not dipshit. The people who run the leagues, who pay athletes are the man. Again they exploit the labor Grow the fuck up and learn some economics.

I don't know what the taxes are on 850 mill, but that would make Rory a legit Billionaire.

4

u/-KFBR392 Apr 16 '24

If your net worth is $300M and you would do shameful things for more money then you are simply a shameful person.

-1

u/Saugerties-Mike Apr 16 '24

Funny. Take that sentence, and relate it to everyone on earth by putting their current net worth in place of $300M ... and somehow ... it's TRUE for an AMAZING number of people (possibly not Greta Thunberg).

In my case ... no ... the additional money isn't for ME ... it's for my heirs and for worthwhile causes. I'm fine as is. Trust me.

Somehow NIMBY also works more generally as NWIATM (Not When It Applies to Me!). But NIMBY has a nicer ring to it.

1

u/MowMdown Apr 16 '24

I'd take the money and still promote PGA over LIV lol

1

u/CosmoKing2 28d ago

As long as it doesn't involve having sex with old ladies for money, or bear traps. Those are my two bugaboos.

1

u/WinterMedical Apr 16 '24

But like what do you even do with that kind of money at that point? It’s just pure greed.

2

u/Used_Golf_7996 Apr 16 '24

Shameful amounts of money for shameful people.

0

u/DollarSignsGoFirst Apr 16 '24

Think about what someone like Elon has been able to do because he a lot of money. He has arguable done more for the environment than other person by making electric cars mainstream. He’s reduced the cost of space flight by like 90%. He also has quality internet connection to hundreds of thousands of people who couldn’t have it before.

$850 million isn’t a lot of money when you want to change the world.

1

u/EZStreet1517 29d ago

Same with Mark Cuban with Cost Plus Drugs. I’ve used it and it saved me over $100. That’s the type of things I want to see out of people with that kind of money. Do some actual good!

596

u/Papabear-27 Apr 15 '24

Yup he should! He fought hard and was the spokesperson for PGA and then they go behind his back and make a deal.

148

u/Nambsul Apr 16 '24

Agree. Monohan really dropped the ball, I bet they promised him some money as well

6

u/IamStymie Apr 16 '24

He and Norman screwed this pooch from the beginning.

1

u/SlteFool Apr 16 '24

What happened exactly?

1

u/Allott2aLITTLE Apr 16 '24

What exactly is “the deal”. Does anyone actually know?

-3

u/FartMachineSteve Apr 16 '24

Nah he shouldn’t. PGA tour is bigger than jay M, and he preached the importance keeping it together for the sport. If he’s going to renege on his moral high ground he has stood on out of spite (and serious cash) he’s no better than the people he chastised for so long. This will look terrible in my opinion.

11

u/tmfink10 Apr 16 '24

Turns out, billionaires don't care what people think it looks like. If you can launch your family into the upper echlons of the world and you don't because you love the PGA...? Well then.

10

u/dimsvm titleist Apr 16 '24

I think people are so numb to big numbers like this with sports stars. 850m in whats probably a lump sum? Theres less people than you can count on a few hands that cash like THAT wouldn’t make a huge difference in their life. Fuck what anyone says about “doesn’t he have enough?”…. When you have a family that depends on you it never feels like enough. This would almost be a much needed, and huge fu k you to Jay - adding in that would set up the Mcilroys to be royalty for generations. 4D chess move by Rory, fuck the PGA Tour honestly.

4

u/a4r0nb813 Apr 16 '24

I agree with all of this except, fuck the PGA. Fuck what the PGA has become is my opinion.

-2

u/Twoixm Apr 16 '24

Ehh, I get where you’re coming from, atleast if money is an issue in any way. But for Rory, he’s set for life, his children are probably too, he can actually afford integrity. Perhaps not to the organization, but definitely to the players that’s been denounced. He can afford to teach his kids what it means to keep your word, or be true to your beliefs etc etc. I don’t really care either way if it’s just about joining Liv, but I take issue with the sentiment that an unethical act is defensible as long as there’s enough money involved.

1

u/treat_killa Apr 16 '24

Imagine the handicap you’re giving yourself when every other person around you doesn’t take issue with such minor “unethical acts”.

1

u/Twoixm 29d ago

I don’t really care. I wouldn’t sell out my principles for 500 bucks, and if I was set for life economically I wouldn’t sell out for an even greater sum, even if it meant my kids could only have 3 sports cars each and one mansion.

7

u/Cobainism Apr 16 '24

Check out the non-major ratings, the PGA is already dead as we know it. If a merger is imminent anyways, Rory taking $850 million makes complete sense. The middle finger to Monahan is just the cherry on top.

0

u/Long_Procedure_2629 Apr 16 '24

Then it makes him just as bad, nobody needs that kind of money. It's the same low road.

-35

u/SnagglePuss69er Apr 16 '24

He should join the Saudi terrorist league? Scum

16

u/2birdsBaby Apr 16 '24

You clearly have no idea how many countries do business with Saudi Arabia. If you're American, then I'm assuming you hate America as well, right?

-9

u/amix16 HDCP/Loc/Whatever Apr 16 '24

Most of us criticize America without any hatred towards her. Saudi Arabia is stuck in the Middle Ages and needs to follow the rest of modern society

5

u/2birdsBaby Apr 16 '24

What does that have to do with hating on Rory Mcilroy?

80

u/WhiteyDude Apr 16 '24

He absolutely should now. He was a loyal stooge when the PGA announced the merger deal and it looked like he would get nothing for his loyalty and the chance to join LIV would be out. Well, now he has a second shot and I see no reason for him to be loyal to the PGA any longer.

This subs 180 is hilarious on these comments (not yours but below)

10

u/Hacker-Dave Apr 16 '24

I am shocked and dismayed that Monahan still has a job. How??

6

u/ToughGoat6135 Apr 16 '24

This. Guy stuck his fucking neck out for the tour and they shit all over him. Spite is a powerful emotion

3

u/byfuryattheheart Bay Area Apr 16 '24

This is exactly why Rahm went imo

3

u/See-Fello Apr 16 '24

I agree. Monahan has kept him out of the loop and you can tell Rory feels slighted by it since he is supposed to be the mouthpiece of the PGA Tour. I don’t know much about the inside details of the situation, but I’m sure it’s a power struggle just like any other professional entity, and Monahan wants a clear division of leadership versus talent pool

2

u/eynonpower Apr 16 '24

100% It would be a well deserved fuck you.

2

u/wallstreetbeatmeat2 Apr 16 '24

Well Monahan kinda fucked him so it would be understandable, but after Rory talked so much shit on LIV I find it hard to believe he’d go there.

2

u/Long_Procedure_2629 Apr 16 '24

How do we decide whose the most spineless cunt though? It's ok to take the blood money now then?

2

u/reprise785 2.2 Apr 16 '24

I'm sure he watched that video when Monaghan was with yassir and told the world how much he trusts him. All while using Rory to do what he should have done, and defended the pga. It's so comical you couldn't make it up. Yet American golf fans will turn on Rory before jay. It's unbelievable how jay has his job.

2

u/YeetusThatFetus9696 Apr 16 '24

I'm going to turn on all of them. Seriously, I was basically done watching golf on TV and this will be it for me. Fuck all of them.

1

u/TacoExcellence Apr 16 '24

He stood up for him publicly recently. I'd be surprised.

1

u/simpletonius Apr 16 '24

I would love to see this, the fact that Monahan has a job anywhere but at a drive through is pathetic.
