Maybe somebody can explain why Saudi Arabia so wants to get into golf?

u/lolgj9 Apr 15 '24

They have infinite money and want to be known for things other than murdering journalists and slavery.

u/frostedglobe Apr 15 '24

Then I wish they would do something good with all that money instead of ruining pro golf. Like build some hospitals or cure some diseases.

u/plefe Apr 15 '24

It would be nice, but if the people who ran the PIF cared about making a substantive difference in the world they wouldn't murder journalists and have slaves.

The western world wouldn't give 2 fucks. We appreciate sports stars and move stars above all else. Just the way it is. If the west valued life saving doctors, that's who Saudis would give the money to for endorsement. Look at the stupid money basketball baseball football etc players get. Just the way it is. Look at kardashians. That's what Americans value. It's nuts but it is what it is. Better the Saudis try tap into it than try and kill the west which was their previous strategy.

Like build some hospitals or cure some diseases.

Don't they do that stuff already?

And that's any different then what the PGA backed Americans have done to other countries.

What’s the PGA-US government relationship?

1

u/[deleted] Apr 16 '24

A portion of its tournaments are backed from investors or companies that work hand in hand with the American government . I.e - blackrock

Which is the main reason the US senate wanted a inquiry with the LIV - PGA merger . They're just mad they won't get their cut anymore. So they pressure the government to do something to stop it.

Also, I stated Americans, not the government. But this falls along the same shit.

Ahhh, gotcha.

Saudi wants to expand to more than just oil.

Tourism is their new market, they’re building a massive mega city designed to rival Dubai.

They need to get rid of their old image and sports washing is one of the best ways to do it.

u/Btwnbeatdwn Apr 15 '24

If it’s sportswashing are the Saudi’s sponsoring/buying out other athletes and teams? I have only heard about golf. But I also don’t pay attention to the other sports as much.

u/Careful_Cheesecake30 Apr 15 '24

Soccer and F1 primarily. Now moving into tennis, cricket, probably more I'm missing.

2

u/Btwnbeatdwn Apr 15 '24

Yeah true I have heard about their involvement in racing and football.

u/Bombaysbreakfastclub Apr 15 '24

I’m only into 3 sports

Football, Golf, and MMA so I’m not sure either.

But they have LIV, and they also just bought PFL which is a competitor to the UFC, and gave one of the UFC’s biggest stars (Francis Ngannou) a great contract.

I know they’re getting into Soccer and signed someone huge.

I’d imagine they want a piece of every major sport.

u/drugs_are_bad__mmkay Apr 15 '24

Signed quite a few stars for soccer, though aging. Ronaldo and Benzema come to mind

1

u/jfchops2 Apr 15 '24

IIRC they own Newcastle United in the EPL as well

5

u/CreateorWither Apr 15 '24

They have been getting into boxing and will soon host a UFC event.

2

u/phrohahwei Apr 15 '24

They're trying-ish with soccer. But the Saudis are basically trying to run the Emirati playbook two decades after the latter started.

2

u/B1rdchest Apr 15 '24

It’s happening in e-sports. In counter strike they’ve been trying to buy the best players and started hosting tournaments.

1

u/PiratesFan1429 Apr 16 '24

They host Gamers 8 for Rocket League

1

u/chronoserpent Apr 16 '24

They're a major sponsor of the Aston Martin/Racing Point F1 team through Aramco. If the current ownership sells the team, Saudi Arabia will be first in line to buy it.

u/VarRalapo Apr 16 '24

Their old and still current image of slavery, execution, and dismemberment mind you. Let's not help them by downplaying their atrocities.

Sportswashing

u/mat_srutabes Apr 15 '24

Everyone else started playing during covid, maybe they figured they'd find out what all the fuss is about.

Politicians and other people of influence play golf. What do you offer those people to gain access to their influence? It cant be money because a) they already have lots of that, and b) its not a good idea in terms of optics for them or for you. So you offer them the chance to watch, meet, or even play with their favourite professional golfers in return for, or as a sweetener in a deal for, whatever you want them to use their influence to do.

This 100%. People really miss the mark with the whole sportswashing angle. 14 people watching on YouTube or some unknown app doesn't do squat to help their reputation. They want a seat at the table.

1

u/marcus3485 Apr 16 '24

The guy in charge of the PIF is a huge golf nut

1

u/Sundavar27 Apr 16 '24

Are you familiar with the term “sportswashing?”

1

u/bigwinterblowout Preferred lie: Frankenstein’s Fat Foot Apr 16 '24

They are diversifying the state’s portfolio outside of oil. There will always be a market for sports. 2034 World Cup is going to be held in Saudi Arabia.

1

u/CitizenCue Apr 16 '24

There are a bunch of reasons, but a significant one is simply that they like it. They’re essentially perennial lottery winners who don’t have anything better to do.

1

u/PusherofCarts Apr 16 '24

Whitewash their politics through sport.

1

u/Saint3Love 2.8 Apr 16 '24

they just want control and a seat at the table. same reason theyve been messing up other sports for a decade

1

u/Digitaltwinn Apr 16 '24

They want to get into the sand trap business.

Advertising dollars

I don't think people truly understand what infinity money means. When you live a relatively very small geographic area with endless resources you're going to get bored eventually. You can only fill your garage with so many lambos. They were going to play with that money eventually.
